We spy with our little eye

A Leaf cast off the Oil should pick up if he is still around. Two words. Mark Bell.

If he stays off the sauce he is a serviceable player. When he played for Chicago he was awesome. Two years ago he had 25 goals for heaven's sakes.

How's this? Katz gives him a life correcting speech about effort, determination and everyone deserving a second chance. He then inserts a clause into his contract that allows him to put a chip in Bell's head like in Total Recall. If Bell goes into a bar then the chip activates and explodes inside his head. If his head explodes his contract is - of course - voided.

Total Recall contracts are totally legal. We even asked the OilersNation Legal Department:

Wanye: "We have a question about the CBA"

OilersNation Legal Department: "Uh, OK...."

Wanye: "What are the legalities surrounding exploding skull implants for players signed off the waiver wire?"

OilersNation Legal Department: " Listen, we got you off a public nudity charge in 2004. We aren't the lawyer for your stupid website. What have we told you about calling the office with this sort of garbage?"

Yeah. Mark Bell. The Oil should totally pick him up.

Ya, cause that is exactly what the oil need. Another smallish winger, who has no physical game to speak of, is horrible defensively and only scores if he is given PP time. Not to mention that he has a history of alcoholism and a 2.5 million price tag. I am going to kick your ass in the hockey pool with great management like this.

Seriously, your idea is dumb. Brain implant? Total Recall? What they really need is a hockey stick with a built-in breathalizer. Not a good one though, a novelty bar breathalizer. And then a second opinion from whatever doctor said that Ethan Moreau had a sprained ankle.

I think Washington's Laing is a better choice. It goes along with the Oiler's theme of nepotism and he is cheap and has an excellent CORSI.

$2.5M for a has-been. No thank you. Ya, he scored 25 goals -- 3 years ago.

If we didn't have a glut of forwards, this could be worth the risk. As stands, spending the rest of our cap allowance on this guy would be very poor cap management.

Which winger does Wanye suppose Bell should supplant?

No to Mark Bell, but I would pay $2.5M for Kyle McLaren, one year left on his contract.

I hate Pouliot. He could replace him. He could also fill in for whichever winger will invariably go down to a horrific injury within the first month. At 28 years old he could have some potential upside.

Pouliot could easily have the same production level (low) as Bell while making 1/3 of the salary. Cap management is the important key here. I'd rather unload a draft pick or prospect for a ~$6M rental at the deadline than use up the remaining cap space before the season even starts on a high-risk player costing $2.5M.

If he passes waivers and is available on re-entry waivers at half the price, I could easily change sides of this debate.

"Ya, cause that is exactly what the oil need. Another smallish winger, who has no physical game to speak of, is horrible defensively and only scores if he is given PP time.”

Obviously you have no idea who Mark Bell is. NHL.com has him listed as 6'4" 220 lbs and he had over 100 PIMs for all 4 full seasons he was in Chicago. Here is his scouting report from sportsnet.ca: "Assets: Is most effective when playing a very physical style. Has two-way ability and some offensive upside. Owns the versatility to play all forward positions. "

That being said, I don't think picking Bell up would be a good idea at $2.5M, but at $1 to $1.5 he would be worth the risk. Bell has too many demons and skeletons and I am quite sure he would not respond well to the pressure of playing in a small Canadian market.

Matt N: Did you say you're going to suck Wanye's ass in the hockey pool?

Holy cow, man, if you're going to come out as strong as you did on Bell's game and then taunt Wanye about schooling him on top of it, at least have a clue.

At least come back here with a "My bad . . . " No?

how about Jason Krog instead of Mark Bell?

he was just waived by the canucks and has put up better numbers in the AHL than bell has at any point in his career.

even if he doesn't make the big team, it is another skilled forward for springfield and potential injury replacement... don't usually follow the farm team but i will this season as Peckham and Brule have really piqued my interest.

None of the waiver options interest me so far. The guys we have on the roster are better, and the guys we just sent down are better (and cheaper).

The oil just dished off their 3 premier partiers this off season and I can't see how bringing in a guy with a history of alchol abuse makes us any better. Big winger with offensive upside, but we are a team about character guys.

As far as Jason Krog goes...he is exactly what we don't need more of. Smallish forward with offensive history in every league BUT the NHL.

We have one too many small forwards that can score in the AHL up with the big team anyway right now (Schremp). We shouldn't be looking to add players (although McLaren and his silly visor might solidify our D) when we are still a player heavy on the roster.

Schremp hasn't been sent down to Springfield yet because there was a death in his family. The Oilers didn't want to add insult to injury by cutting him. They will send Schremp down to the minors when he returns from the funeral.
