GDB 35: Hemsky's winded

Jason Gregor
December 30 2008 01:59PM

EdmontonOilers2

The Tootoo train has derailed another player, and this one hurts the Oilers. Ales Hemsky won’t dress tonight, and is highly doubtful to play tomorrow in Calgary as well.

Hemsky is still a bit fuzzy after taking a clean, but hard hit from Jordan Tootoo on Sunday night. Hemsky is playing the best hockey of his career and like his coach said, “There is never a good time to lose your best player,” so the Oilers will try to extend their winning streak without him. The big question is who replaces him on the right side of Horcoff? Erik Cole and Sam Gagner have some chemistry, as do Marc Pouliot and Andrew Cogliano. Will MacTavish switch up the lines or will Liam Reddox take some shifts with Horcoff and Penner? Don’t be surprised to see Reddox with Horcoff and Penner in a shut-down role against the Senators’ top line tonight. “The thing that is great about Horcoff is the versatility that he can do almost anything in the game. We can use him in a checking assignment if we need to. We will see how the game unfolds, so we will start one way and see how the game goes and then craft the lines relative to the situation in the game,” said MacTavish. So having Reddox with Horcoff in a shut-down role early seems likely and then if the Oilers are trailing expect to see either Pouliot or Cole skate with Horcoff. Of course don’t expect Reddox

Garon to go

Mathieu Garon will start tonight and Dwayne Roloson will go tomorrow in Calgary. Garon is looking to rebound from a sub par performance when he and the entire team stunk out the joint versus Chicago. Garon is 0–1 in his career against the Sens with a sparkling 0.83 GAA and .964 save percentage, while the Oilers are 7-3-2 against the Senators on home ice. Garon, who is an UFA at the end of the season, is desperately trying to find the game he had last season. If he hopes to get back between the pipes after tonight he will need to be really solid, or Roloson could easily play a the next six straight.

Musical chairs continues

For those who don’t know the Oilers room is shaped like a horseshoe. The veterans sit in the curve area at the top. Facing down the room from left to right Cole, Pisani, empty stall now that Gilbert moved, Staios and then Moreau. Down the left side it goes Souray, Strudwick, Reddox, MacIntyre, Grebeshkov, Smid, Gilbert, Brodziak, Nilsson empty stall and then Deslauriers has two stalls. Down the right side is Horcoff, Hemsky, Visnovsky, Stortini, then an open walkway, Penner, Gagner, Cogliano, Pouliot, Garon and Roloson. It worked for Erik Cole, so Tom Gilbert is hoping a new locker stall works for him. After Erik Cole and Steve Staios switched stalls over the Christmas break, today Tom Gilbert had a new stall between Ladislav Smid and Kyle Brodziak. Last season Gilbert was on the left side of the locker room, in the second last stall on the left side. He was asked to sit amongst the veterans at the start of the season, but has now moved back to the left side. “I think I needed a change. I was sitting in the veteran line, but I didn’t really fit in with those guys. It was a good experience, but I wanted to move back to the left side of the room with some of the guys I’d have more in common with. The conversations were a bit too sophisticated for me. They talked about books, world events, and kids. I’m back in the middle age group,” said Gilbert laughing. Players are superstitious and Gilbert wasn’t fond of his move to begin with, and now that he hasn’t scored in 15 games he is hoping a move back to the left side of the room might help.

Gregor,

Are you serious about Reddox? Why not move Cole up there or Pouliot? Let's hope he doesn't have to play much with Horcoff and Penner or we shouldn't expect much offence from them.

How long do you think Hemsky is out for? WIll anyone get a call up?

I'm more worried about the Calgary game tomorrow night. Watched a Calgary game a few nights ago. Man those guys are getting good. We'll have to play our butts off or it will be Chicago II.

First time poster...

This is why I love the Nation. I enjoy the variety, but most importantly the behind the scenes stuff. Gregor I never knew where guys sat in the room. I'm sure it doesn't make a huge difference, but it is nice to know exactly who sits where...

Let's hope Hemmer isn't out too long and that the Sens road woes continue tonight...Four in a row for second time this year...Oil 4-2...

Well Reddox is their only option right now. As for call ups, none will be here. Hemsky is expected to be back on Saturday v. Dallas so they will suck it up for two games.

With Hemmer out it will be line 1a and line 1b I would think.

1a Gagner, Cole and somebody. 1b Horcoff, Penner and somebody.

The Blender will be out in full force tonight.

Well, it'll be interesting to see how our PP looks without Hemmer distributing the puck.

P.S. What's with the late start tonight? 8 PM? I guess the bright side is Wanye won't be late to JL meeting... unless, of course, he'll be taking his usual spot at RX1 near a beer vendor tonight.

Penner watched the entire scenario go down between Tootoo & Hemmer & he chose to skate right by it & ignore it. That type of crap is unacceptable IMO.

Now I have nothing against a good solid clean hit (which it was), but when your best player is left in a heap on the ice & you give the player who inflicted the pain the age old ole' & pass right by, you should be taken out in the back alley & taught a a real hard lesson by your peers.

How is that answering the bell? Someone shoulda fought Tootoo again after he got out of the box..somebody who is supposed to fight. To me, what Moreau did was a waste of time even if his intentions were right.

Don't get me wrong. What Moreau did was the right thing but he needs to actually fight him in that situation, not rush at him and knock him over. He did the same thing with Bieksa in Van C.... Orrrrrr he could let Stortini do his damn job.

Heads up nation. JSBM will not be in attendance for the JL meeting tonight, as we will actually be in attendance at RX1. This is my first Oilers game in about five years, so I'm more excited than Wanye when the junior highs get out for the summer.

So it's up to the rest of you to drink all the Labbat Blue you can, and make more off color jokes then you ever thought possible to make up for our absence.

Did you watch the whole clip? A number of punches were thrown, but they went down. In the initial feed the camera didn't really find them until they were going down. It wasn't Moreau's idea to go down.

I was at the game so yeah I saw it. Moreau seems to always go down when he tries to fight. That was what I meant..along with the fact that that isn't his job.

I'd rather wait a shift and lose Moreau for 5 minutes than have Penner get a possible instigator penalty and risk getting hurt. Penner is on the top line because we need him there. We don't need him in the penalty box or worse, the trainers room. Tootoo is not worth losing one of our top forwards. Had Moreau realized his wrist was not fight worthy most likely Stortini or Strudwick get to Tootoo later. What Moreau did was honerable but what if he hurt his wrist and was done for the year? Is getting Tootoo back for a cleaner-than-he-usually-hits hit worth it?

I have to agree with the people who think Tootoo should have been decapitated. The whole point of it is to make him think twice before laying those hits on people. Its why we wanted a Macintyre for the Boogards, Tootoo's and other pieces of trash like that. Tootoo isnt going to touch Hemsky knowing that Macintyre, or another deterent, is waiting there and will tear him a new one. Do you think Dan Carcillo will hit one of our guys from behind anytime in the near future? After he got his ass handed to him, he was a non factor physically.

Tootoo's received any number of beatings for his hitting. He also recognizes that his hitting is why he's in the league; let's face it, he's not a threat to ever win any scoring titles. He's no Todd Marchant or Andrew Cogliano. So if he doesn't hit, he doesn't have a job, and it doesn't matter if Steve MacIntyre lays him out on the ice or not. He'll be back at it again the next shift.

The Oilers responded pretty well to him the next couple of times he had them lined up: they just moved out of the way. Take the hitting from Tootoo's game and he's a non-factor. *That* is how you stop him.
