It's apology time, Nation

Sheldon Souray haters, it’s time for you to make amends for your crimes. You remember Sheldon Souray, right? The local boy from Elk Point, Alberta who said it was an honour to be able to sign with his hometown Oilers in the summer of 2007? You also remember 2007, right? The era where the Oilers couldn’t get a hot dog vendor to agree to work at RX1 much less sign a player of any note.

Yeah, that’s right. Souray signed a rich deal in the summer of 2007 and promptly got injured -- limiting his first season in copper and blue to only 26 games. The Mighty Oil missed the playoffs and Souray was blamed for virtually everything:

“Sheldon Souray is a bum.”

“Sheldon Souray is overpaid.”

“Sheldon Souray once borrowed $5 from my cousin Gary and still hasn’t paid him back.”

Yep, it was a consensus in the Nation that Kevin Lowe had rocks in his skull and basically set the Oil back 100 years by signing Souray to his overpriced contract. Oh, and that year he got 26 goals for the Canadiens? No one would even dare suggest that it was anything more than a fluke. It only happened because (insert stupid reasoning here) and you have to remember that (insert more Souray hating here).

This continued all of last season and into the summer until finally someone snapped and stood up for the guy waaaaaaay back on Sept 3.

Well, well, well.

Look who’s an overpriced bum now, Souray Haters. Look who probably owes his own cousin Gary $20 now but now ignores his calls. We’ll give you a hint. It’s all of you haters -- but specifically you those of you who picked him as your goat in the star/goat draft of 2008.

JB September 2 2008, 7:40 pm. Goat -- Sheldon Souray. $5.4 million. Ugh. Desperation signings always hurt the most.

jayoilfan September 3 2008, 8:42 am. Not so star -- Sheldon Souray, way too overpaid and a total bandage case for what he brings. Lucky if he hits 40 games.

Matt September 3 2008, 9:36 pm. Goat goes to Souray, even though I really like the guy.

Gord September 2 2008, 11:03 am. (I'll pick) my goat last year as well -- Sheldon Souray. It’s easy to see how many mistakes this overpaid clown makes when you are looking closely for them. You can almost always put the blame squarely on him for the goal that just went in against the Mighty Oil.

My my, Souray Haters. How very stupid of all of you. Blame paste needs to be smeared on the faces of everyone who got involved -- including our very own Professor Willis who got in on the action:

Jonathan Willis September 3 2008, 1:20 pm. I’ve talked about Souray at some length earlier this summer he isn’t an all-star powerplay option.

Well, seeing how much you all love “numbers” and “reading” let’s all have a look at Souray’s stats for the year to date -- and prorated for the season:

2008–09: 25 GP, 8 G, 13 A, 21 PTS Prorated 08–09: 81 GP, 26 G, 42 A, 68 PTS

Oh and you can compare it to the one-in-an-overpaid-lifetime season that he had in Montreal if you like:

Career Season 2006–07: 81 GP, 26 G, 38 A, 64 PTS

What’s that noise? Is it thousands of Souray haters shutting their mouths in unison? It must be.

Here we are, three months and six days after defending Souray, saying that not only is Souray bringing the heat, but he also deserves to be in the All-Star Game. Ordinarily we don’t vote -- for the All Star Game, for American Idol, for Canadian Idol or in any political elections. But we are going to vote for this -- and so should all of us.

Here is how he stands now. 6th place in voting. Ahead of CFP – believe that – but trailing the likes of Campbell and Rafalski. Does that seem right to you? There is only one thing we can do to make up for our early shabby treatment of Big Sexy.

Go vote. Often. Here. We voted four times this morning just to kick things off.

-- This message has been brought to you by the VOTES Committee – Vote Often To Elect Souray.

It worked! I was secretly hoping that If I calle dhim out it would be a good year for him and look at what he is doing! wink wink, really I want to see all the oilers get 30+ goals but I had to think of someone andI relaly like Greshakov and Gilbert, Staios was a historical good guy so I went with Sheldon a real unknown from 200

Okay okay so I called him a goat. I can man up say I'm sorry, you've shamed me enough. I'll go and vote for him in the allstar ballots. Sheesh. One of the few times I have ever posted and they remember.

September 2 2008, 11:33 am. I’ll leave the easy picks to others and go out on a limb here. First Star; Cogs. Everyone picks this guy for a bad bout of the Sophmore Jinx. I say that while he’ll leave the first line to the vets, he’ll turn into the solid second line guy everyone was hoping for. Potential Disapointment: Nilsson. Something about this kid makes me uneasy, despite his flashes of brilliance last season. I’m not hoping for him to fail and I’d like nothing better than to see the kid-line light up goalies coast-to-coast this year, but something deep down inside whispers that Nilsson is going to spend a lot of time as a spectator this year, despite the high hopes and pool picks of many. blockquote> @ Reverend Wanye Gretz: I'm glad you linked that old thread. I'd forgotten who my picks were. Nice to know there are a few of us who look more like prophets than a bums at the quarter pole.

Wow, we are going to have to start stuffing this ballot box furiously. Currently at 124,274 (3052 thus far).

Just over 3000 votes since Wanye posted that particular image of the standings. 250,000 to go...

@ Wanye Gretz:

Here's an interesting number for you: 397

That's the number of current All-Star votes for: GREBESHKOV, Denis

Does he have that many family members, or does he just go straight from the rink to his computer to vote?

OT: As a Toronto resident (yes, boo hiss from AB, yeah yeah) there are no ACC parking lots left -- MLSE is turning them all into condos.

I suppose there are underground lots for all these towers, but you get the point

As a matter of fact I had to look on google maps to see if they had a parking lot or not, because I just assumed that they hate their fans that much. But it looked like there was one. Maybe the google map picture was outdated. Either way a shirtless knife fight is in order.

@ Ender the Dragon

You have made two interesting points:

1. 397 Votes for GrebAAAAAAAAshkov

Q: How on earth can he work a mouse with his hooves? A: He can't. This proves that NHL All Star voting is rigged.

2. You: OK, that was hurtful. Apologies to Dennis, who tries his best.

Me: I wasn't being mean. I can't beat Dennis in a smart off - so when he argues with an article like this one I have to engage him on my home turf. Shooting from the hip - not the brain.

I was simply fighting the fight of all the "non intelligent" people who read this site all the time and don't comment for fear of being destroyed by the brainsharks that troll these here waters.

Speak freely my people. If someone who pays attentions to numbers shoots you down, you shoot them down too by yelling SHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT until they back off.

That was my point.

Yeah, pretty much any parking lot down there is an excavation or condo tower skeleton now. That google maps photo is at least 1.5 years old.

I'm the Dennis with an extra "N" so I think he was talking about the Denis who plays with the Oilers, no?:)

In any case, I simply didn't read the whole thing and I thought it was a staunch defense of the Souray contract.

Wayne: I've been a fan of this team for a long time and I've geeked out over them many times. I also believe in good sense and numbers, however, and sometimes it all clashes.

I usually go back to geek mode when the Oilers make the playoffs but that's only once ever four years.

Why the hell do so many people want to see our players at the All Star Game? Do you think that having more players playing there will make the Oilers a better team? Does it help our chances to hoist Lord Stanley's silverware? Will having those players there hurt the other teams' chances of succeeding?

Stop voting for Oilers. The game is soft, and meaningless. An additional game that could see one of our MVPs get hurt, fall out of sync with their linemates, or maybe decide they'd rather be plaing with other players.

Disagree with me? Ask Horcoff what he thinks of the All-Star Game after last year.

You know what? You're right wayne. Send our best players there. Let them play All-Star Hockey. I mean really.... wha'ts the worst that could happen...
