According to Dan Barnes over at the Edmonton Journal, Sam Gagner and Mathieu Garon may suit up for Team Canada, among other players:
"Yzerman was expected to contact Anaheim for Chris Pronger, Scott Niedermayer, Ryan Getzlaf and J.S. Giguere, fully expecting only half of them to be available. In Boston, Dennis Wideman should get a call. In Washington, Mike Green is on Team Canada's radar. In Calgary, Matt Lombardi, Dion Phaneuf and Jarome Iginla should be asked to play in Halifax and Quebec City next month. And both Chris Mason and Shea Weber should have been contacted in Nashville. Edmonton Oilers Sam Gagner and Mathieu Garon are also in the mix."
Barnes adds in another article that the announcement will take place at a press conference tomorrow.
Although the Nation's own Robin Brownlee mentioned Gagner's inclusion on Team Canada, the Garon mention is new. Given that some Nation readers have been making noise about Gagner playing too much, do you think a Team Canada experience will actually hinder his play next year? I don't... Just make sure the lad get's a solid eight hours of sleep each night.
What about Garon?
If he is a 14th forward or something of that nature he likely won't be playing too much. The games are in Canada so the travel won't tire him out too much. The kid is 18 going on 19, so I think he can take a few weeks of learning from some elite Canadian players without passing out.
Just to be around Hitch as a coach and then all of the vets in practice is great experience for him. I can see Team Canada grooming him for a nice role in 2010.
Gagner in the mix? Good thing DJ pointed out Barnes mentioned that possibility. Why didn't we have that? Oh wait . . .
Far be it for me to step on your toes, Robin. Yes, you mentioned Gagner (and you'll note I even linked to your original post).
Not a peep about Garon though.
What a season for Gagner. If he makes this team he is the real deal
It would also be a vote of confidence in Garon. Now that Brodeur isn't playing maybe this will go through...
Is it just me or is there something wrong with Flames and the World Cup? The above article mentions Iginla, Phaneuf and Lombardi but I don't see any of them on the roster. I don't believe that Iginla has ever played in the World Cup. I would strongly consider not even inviting them to the 2010 team if they snub Canada at the first ever Canadian hosted World Cup.
This will be a great experience for Sammy. As far as I'm concerned having one of your emerging stars represent your country can never be seen as a bad thing. Great news about Garon aswell. Pretty big deal to be selected out of such an alite bunch.
