Everyone’s favourite trade rumor signs a one year deal

If we had a nickel for every time we had convinced ourselves Jay Bouwmeester was coming Chez Oil, we would be rolling around town in an SUV made of Ferraris welded together and coated in 24 carat gold. There is just something about a local player, coming home to E-Town from the dreaded beaches of Florida that keeps the flame of hope alive in the Oilersnation.

It has been reported on TSN that Bouwmeester has just signed a one year deal with the Panthers worth $4.875 million dollars. “Sources tell TSN that the Panthers were interested in a longer term deal, but Bouwmeester wanted to do a one-year deal because he can become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2008-09 season.”

In this new post salary cap era - where contracts are being signed that don’t expire until well into the next century - a one year deal means one thing. It means that you shouldn’t be investing in a new Bouwmeester Panthers jersey if you are looking for long term clothing options.

If Bouwmeester  – a known defensive defenseman quantity – doesn’t want to commit long term to Florida, the door is open for someone to come in and trade for the rear guard. Maybe someone who has a new owner? Maybe this owner owns a chain of drug stores and a house so big that it even reportedly impressed Gene Simmons in a party thrown over the weekend?

Maybe … well you get the picture.

...And cue all the people who say that Bouwmeester doesn't want to play under the pressure in Edmonton.

But I'm not sure. At this point, Jay may be thinking that just about anything is better than playing in no-pressure, no-win Florida.

I think he would be a good addition to the team, particularly given the need for an actual defensive (gasp!) defenseman.

It would be a good trade if KLowe could make it happen. I dont see it happening though for 2 reasons: 1) Florida would be asking to much in return and 2) There is no guarantee that Bouwmeester would sign in Edmonton long term. If KLowe wanted this to happen he should try doing a sign and trade deal like they did with Pronger, only not 6 years, more like 2 or 3 years.

In a non-salary cap world this would be a good move. But in the world we live its impossible.

But I would be interested to know who the Panthers would want off the Oil to make this deal happen, and who the Oil would offer. With Stoll, Pitkanen and Torres gone, there aren't really any people I'd like to see dealt!

Souray going the other way would make sense. But the chances of the Pathers wanting him, and Souray wanting to play in Florida, are virtually nil.

Of course it would be part of a larger package, but getting Souray involved in the deal, and clearing away a 5.4 salary cap hit on the blueline would be a prerequisite to get Bouwmeester here.

Souray for Bouwmeester? Show me where to sign, immediately.

I think you can sign right here on these papers called "Trades the fans would like to do, that GMs look at and laugh"

Why wouldn't Souray want to play in Florida? I for one want to see him fully healthy for awhile before he is mentioned in trade rumors.

As would any GM involved in that trade. Let's be real here, people. Souray has an NTC. He's not going anywhere.

Why wouldn't Souray want to go to Florida? It would essentially end his hopes of winning a cup for the duration of his contract.

Souray was the first thought that came to my mind when trading for J-bo. Souray just hasn't been healthy and Bouwmeester has played in over 240 games straight. I think Souray prefers the spotlight though.

He's repeatedly said playing in Edmonton would be too much pressure for him. If Lupul couldn't hack it, then I believe Boumeester would also have problems.

I think his best bet here, when he's traded at the deadline, is probably Phoenix to play for a second-round playoff exit. He will then sign for huge dollars with New Jersey.
