Everything is fine now

Erik Cole got a hat trick last night and the Oilers won 5-2 –- contrary to what the scoreboard here on the Nation is telling you this morning. No, you have not stumbled into an alternate universe, this is really what happened.

All the loyal citizens of the Nation can now experience the flip side of constant negativity during a bad season of hockey. What we get to have today is without a doubt one of the most coveted emotions any hardcore hockey fan can have: temporary irrational exuberance.

You find yourself looking at the standings and saying, "Three games over .500? Well that's not so bad..." and wondering about what it would take to climb into eighth place. (note: Don't look at our standings though. They accurately reflect the 1987 season through 41 games.) You certainly aren't anywhere near the positivity we all feel as the Oil spring to life and go 21-0 every March to miss the playoffs by a third of a point, but you can feel the ol' joy emotion stirring in the lump of coal you call a heart.

If you work in an office you can go post up by the water cooler all morning and talk happy shop with your thirsty coworkers. Did anyone see the game last night? Woooo! That Brule sure is looking good! Wooo! Erik Cole got a hattie? Wooo!

People you wouldn't ordinarily say three words to become close confidants of all your secret Oilers desires. You seek out "Barry" in "accounting" because you know that he has an Oilers flag on the wall of his office and will probably be good for 15 minutes of "fond remembrances."

Yep, in the middle of the best JL meeting to date, a pretty good hockey game broke out. Maybe it was the snow. Maybe it was the soldiers in attendance. Maybe it was Cole being awarded a hat trick 15 hours after the game ended. Whatever the case, the Oilers handled a very good Capital team last night with some panache.

As our dear friend Rob pointed out last night, this is a cause for celebration.

#285 rob January 13 2009, 8:23 pm. So now after this win can there be a positive post on Oilers Nation for once? Or something about hockey instead of the soap opera BS that is thrown on here all the time? How about defenense, the breakout, players with not a lot of experience playing well against huge talent…. Anything but firing the coach and Schremp. ps. Think we would be in 5th and have 30 more goals if we played in the east. Can we move to the other conference?

It’s a funny thing writing about hockey 24/7, Rob. We didn’t realize how hard it was till we started writing on here. It got even harder when people started reading what we wrote on here too. Our intention is not to be negative on a daily basis. It’s hard to come up with fresh material every day -– particularly when the team is gassing every other game, there's no real news in sight and yet tens of thousands of Citizens of the OilersNation turn up here every week looking to read something.

Today they could be reading us ripping Rob a new one for talking smack after a win. But we're so pleasantly content from an actual hard-fought win against a good team we will simply let it be. Instead we made a pretty picture for everyone to enjoy. He's some kind of awesome that Craig MacTavish.

We love you Erik Cole. Please don’t leave at the end of the year.

Schremp would have scored 4 goals, and would have beat Semin over the head like a 2001 Space Odyssey Monkey.

MacT made the team stop at 5 goals, because he's allergic to scoring. He will probably bag skate anyone who scored a goal, and Cole will be called out for being a ninny.

Goilers!

That is the most determined game I have seen from the Oil this season. The team played like they were totally pissed off at someone and they took it out on Washington. Bad flight perhaps?

Now don't go encouraging spontaneous nice thoughts about MacT, Wayne. Wouldn't want anyone to hurt themselves; you don't have that kind of injury coverage here at ON.

Can't wait to hear all the fair weather fans touting how awesome the Oilers are, that is of course until their next loss when they sprain their ankles jumping from the bandwagon and back to calling for MacT's head and that Schremp should be up here and the whole team sucks...sigh

Wow this month we got 9 home games and 3 away. A playoff team will take advantage of this. So far we are 4-2. Could this really be the month. I doubt it. You still never know.

If we are a playoff team we should finish the month no less than 9-3. If we go .500 or a game or 2 over. We will miss the playoffs. Book it!

On a more positive note, how HUGE are these next 4 games (MIN, COL, PHX & CLS) we are in the mix with these 4 and can make up some much needed ground with a sweep.

Like I said. With us playing NW teams 4 times this month. Us having 9 home games to 3 road games.

Playoff teams go 9-3 or even 8-4 during that stretch. We are on pace for a 8-4 month. Anything less I know what our destination is.

We are in luck - most Jack Adams winners get sacked the following year - and I believe that PLaForge contract is up at the end of this year....but with Nicholls schilling for Katz as Chairman - Spokesman - League Liason - he may stay.

I will save my positivity and/or negativety for Saturday after they play two divisional foes.

Funny you mention going 21-0 March to miss the playoffs by a third of a point. I was just thinking we are alot closer to the playoffs right now than when we usually are when we make our annual March Maddness scramble. Save for 06/07 that sure broke the monotany of that trend.

Willis who has the best combined record in March since 2002?

Compared to last year the Oilers are doing a fair bit better, points wise anyways.

They are seven points ahead of their pace after the same number of games and they have given back 8 less loser points to the opposition.

Strangely, despite the better record I seem to remember them actually playing better last season. Maybe it was because they were fighting through all the injuries in the process?

That will be key, with only 1 x 4 game winning streak, 2 x 3 game win streaks & 4 x back to back wins we really need to get on another run to start making up some blown points.

You must be doing METH to age that quickly.... Take aspirin to reduce your stroke potential

Jim Rome drinks the Bombay Sapphire Jason Gregor drinks bacardi limon (possibly) Bagged Milk - well 2% or skim (switch hitter) Deep Oil - crown coke - no fruit (idiot bartenders trying to metrosexual my drink)

No, I'm using my positivity now. The last few weeks, I've been either condemning this team and it/s management/coaching or damning it with faint praise ("the fourth line looks good", or "hey, I think they killed a penalty"). I'm not sold that they can keep winning, so I'm cashing in on happiness now.

Don't blow the DIVISIONS within the lockerroom out or proportion. It's not like guys hate each other and were dropping the mitts...They pulled a FESTIVUS, and aired out their grievances...and like most guys moved on.

We all know that guys can get pissed at their buddy, tell him to screw off, even punch him in the face...then the next day go back to being buddies. That's what makes guys awesome. If this were a girl room...they would squabble once, then never speak to one another again, while plotting to shag the boyfriend or ex-boyfriend of the girl they fought...No offence Amber, but that is the norm...I'm sure you being a sports chick don't adhere to these rules, but most humans with the extra X chromosome seem to hold grudges longer...It is a proven scientific theory!

Buck...the room isn't seperated like you seem to think it is...

What else do you want to know - Gregor shops at Identity Clothing drives a KIA, works out at Spark and is friends with Robin Brownlee, Ryan Richaud - and is a bad poker player (so my sources say)...

rumor has it the Oil management are not happy with my truth speaking revelations..... but when I left I didn't sign a non disclosure agreement....

In the old days - no Festivus - just a good old fashion team drinking meeting across the street at The Forum Inn where a pole was not for greivances but for assistance to the female dancer - cheers - loosen up and get on the same page - then head to David's for happy hour, the Grinder for dinner - Barry T's and Goose Loonies, after hours party till 8AM - then straight to practice - sweat off the booze. _______________________________________________________

Young guns are ticked that there ice time is shaved from last year and the vets are shooting blanks like a vasectomy - I was waiting for Cole to call into Rome this morning without the CFRN call letters (THE TEAM Eric) since he just knows the dial number 1260 - for once the Safeway 5 goals for a million dollars over 20 years was starting to look interesting.....
