GDB 44: Party Time

Wanye
January 16 2009 08:50AM

Oh we hate Fridays. The misery that comes as you count down your final eight hours of the work week. The terrible knowledge that the weekend is upon us and that there will be two whole days of not having to work before the joy of Monday returns. Someone may try and sell you beer in the next 48 hours for heavens sakes. We must have the strength to say, “No thanks friend. I don’t need beer to enjoy yourself.”

*pregnant pause*

If you are watching the game tonight do your ol’ pal Wanye a favour. If you are near Edmonton -- come to Hudsons on Bourbon Street. Click on the Game Day Party ad on the main page and print off the evite too. We were originally going to use the money to support the rebel troops closing in on the Capital City and General Montoya. His bloody regime must be brought to an end by any means necessary.

Then it was helpfully pointed out to us that we don’t actually know any rebel troops and that General Montoya is simply someone we made up in our head. Apparently imaginary political causes can’t accept real money as donations. Instead it was politely pointed out  that the Nation is currently supporting Kids with Cancer and that for every evite returned the people at Hudsons will donate $2. Decent.

For those of you who won’t be in attendance...

We will pour a little on the ground for the homies that can’t be with us. Top of the list: Willis. If he lived in Edmonton -- or Alberta for that matter -- we would load up the Nation Van with duct tape, a black hood and some Twizzlers, in case we got hungry on the way. Then we would cruise over Chez Willis, kindly negotiate with Mrs. Willis, then strong-arm Jonathan out of the house and roughly load him into the van. Then we would go to the party.

Those of you who won’t be in attendance -- our hearts and thoughts are with you. We generally get a little emotional watching Ryan Smyth playing for any team that doesn't rhyme with Snoilers. We may get a little extra emotional after a few beers tonight, especially if Smyth scores. We will need emotional support to get us through the evening and we appreciate all the help we can get. We will also be selling off the tickets to the Oilers rematch against the Wild on Jan 30. These tickets were donated by Buck75 to the cause. Personally we wouldn't part with Oilers tickets if someone had our entire family hostage.

But we don't negotiate with terrorists.

That's our policy.

Thoughts of last night

When Sheldon Souray positively ended the life of Weller we can’t help but think fondly of all the Souray haters that didn’t give the guy a moment’s peace on the airwaves and on the Nation in the off-season. Still think that he was a bad signing? Other than the odd giveaway here and there he has basically been everything that the Oil wanted when they brought him in. Plus he is a rockstar that make the ladies go “OOOOOOOWHEEEEE!”

And when is the last time Liam Reddox did that? Huh? Never.

That’s when.

Why would Gregor want to dare callers to come to the station to "sort things out"? Do the callers get personal or does he take the Oilers bashing a little too personal?

Lets clear things up...It was only three callers and they thought it was funny to drop an F-bomb on air. I hosted the post game show for 6 years and I never had to use a delay, so it wasn't a problem.

The one dork talked tough and gave the Go-F-urself...I just said I doubt you'd have the guts to say it to my face. That was it.

Jack, you are like those guys, nameless and faceless and you must be a real idiot if you think I give a crap if a caller rips the Oilers. My job doesn't change if they win or lose. I rip stupidity and gutless pukes that is it.

If Tencer keeps using "locker room" instead of "dressing room" we might have to send Wanye after him to turf him back to the US of A.

Honestly though Jason, how are you not a fan of your hometown team? I heard you say either on here or on air that you really don't care about them anymore. Please explain to me.

No I think you are less than intelligent and immature. Not name calling just facts. And once again your lack of intellect is shown by a lame. "You and Tencer look alike" comment. Even a half wit could see we are not, but you actually think that your lame jokes somehow bother me. I feel sorry for you that your life is so boring and lame that you feel the need to sit at your computer and wonder how you could insult someone. It's sad that your life is that tedious and uneventful. This will be the last time I even bother wasting my time acknowledging one of your lame, pointless and immature posts. Surprise everyone and have a post that actually adds some insight for once.

And Baggedmilk to put yourself in the same category is demaeaning yourself. I know who you are, Wayne sent a picture and believe me I don't need to see you to know you are Brownlee's illegitimate child. It's all good.

I want them to win for the fans and all the business owners that benefit from a playoff run, but when I go to the games I don't cheer for them to win or lose. I hope the game is entertaining. It's my job to cover the team without bias. I know it is near impossible to not be somewhat biased, but routing for the team would change that. I don't have the emotional attachment I used to, because it is my job. I'm not complaining at all, because I love my job. I do miss that emotional rollercoaster that goes with cheering for a team in the city you live in, so now I route even louder for the Dolphins.

I can cheer for the Miami Dolphins, because I don't cover them closely, thus it wouldn't compromise my ability to do the job.

I would love it to be for some inspiring reason, but I was nine and watching the NFL, and back then the Dolphins threw the ball more than most teams and they had green, my fav colour in their jerseys, so I became a fan. Have been ever since, and there have been many lean years I tell you. The best part of being a FINS fan was when the Bills lost four Super Bowls in a row. Sure they were great in the regular season, but two of my buddies are diehard Bills fans, and at the end of each season neither team won the Super Bowl. Imagine if the Oilers went to the Cup four years in a row and never won. 2006 was hard enough on the city, I couldn't imagine four years in a row.

Curtis, let me clarify. It wouldn't bother me at all if someone questions what I write, or say on the air. Opinions are what makes this site and my show go. It's the childish shots at personal things that iritate me. I doubt the guys who type that stuff walk up to strangers and say that to their face. They might, but they would do so realizing there are consequences. That is all.

Feel free to debate and question stats or opinions all day long. I rip on Wanye because I know him, and I would say that to his face and vice versa. I've never been one to hide behind a keyboard and don't accept it when others do either. Nothing more. How about back to sports talk....or at least how hot Kate Beckinsale is.

G@ David S:

Good, someone mentioned Stauffer...so I can now chime in. Check out the interview he did with Lubo on the Oilers website (Jan 14 off day interview). Lubo's freakin' hilarious. Stauffer asks what language him and Grebby speak on the ice being that one is Russian and one Slovak, to which Lubo replies.."We speak Bulgarian"...Instead of getting the joke and laughing joyously along, Stauffer dumbfoundly replies "you speak Bulgarian???" What a tool.

Thanks for the clarification of being a fins fan. Funny you bring up the Bills, cuz I started being a Bills fan after playing Tecmo bowl and realized number 34, Thurman Thomas was a great running back in the game... and it was in the middle of that great run you speak of.

Great article link JW. Here's a quote from Cole that I think screams out in a nutshell what many people think are Mac T's shortcomings this year:

Cole: (On his slow start to the season) "It's a combination of different things. Not really knowing the coach that well, the coach not knowing me that well.... Everything off the ice was seamless, everything on the ice -- coming in and running a new system and having lots of questions about what style of game we're trying to play and at the same time being over on the other wing -- it was just a lot of different things."

Shouldn't an NHL coach be able to communicate the system he wants played, and what he wants out of particular players? Or do coaches actually adjust their system to the stengths of the players as the year goes on? (Not being critical to Mac T here, I really don't know the answer to that question)

It does seem to me though that the most successful teams do have a consistent message as to what their coach expects, and are able to execute that system more often than not. The management of these teams also seem to be able to build their rosters based on this system so they have the proper personnel to handle it. Until Mac T and the Oil management can do the same, the Oilers may never become an elite team.
