Monday morning confessions

We have to confess that we are WAY too young for any sort of understanding of this “Hall and Oates” that was bumping on the PPV last night. But having little to do on a Monday morning, we've been listening to them on the YouTubes for the last several hours. We hate to say it -- we can’t believe that we would say it -- but we like Hall and Oates (?). The intense spotlight provided to Hall and Oates by the Oilers PPV broadcast could lead to a resurgence of the careers of both Daryl Hall AND John Oates, provided that they are both still a) alive, b) capable of performing, and c) speaking to one another. When one looks at the first comment on the YouTube clip above it reads:

tapewar (9 minutes ago) wow this song is awesome! MY favorite hockey team the Oilers were playing this in their locker room after a win!

By our count that just doubled the Hall and Oates fans in the civilized world from four to six. For posterity here is a complete list of Hall and Oates fans:

  1. Hall
  2. Oates
  3. Mrs. Hall
  4. Wanye Gretz
  5. “tapewar”
  6. Oates

The actual game

Anderson retires his number. We must confess we were not only too young for Hall and Oates but we also have about zero recollections of Glenn Anderson playing for a Professional Ice Hockey Squadron. Perhaps we could lean on our esteemed colleague Robin Brownlee to regale us with some tales of #9 from the Glory Years.

The Oiler Alumni are still looking pretty good, and the Hockey Club rolled out the big guns in the pre-game ceremony yet again. It doesn’t get old either -- Messier still looks like he could put a puck through a brick wall. Kurri is still unintelligible in an interview but seems nice. Fuhr looks ecstatic to be on camera and Louie Debrusk must have been secretly waiting for all the other, more articulate, ex-Oilers fighters to exit the building and leave his commentator job intact.

Then the Oil go out and light the lamp six -- count 'em: six --  times including a hat trick for the sometimes criticized Captain Moreau. This is one of the most amazing things we have ever seen since this happened:

Yes, that’s right. We were eating Triscuits the other day and we had two that came stuck together. We took the picture immediately and have put the cracker on top of the fridge to impress visitors for the next 75 years. If any of the Nation readers want an autographed picture of the triscuits, they can be had by emailing us directly at wanyegretz@gmail.com.

Man -- go listen to “Out of Touch” by Hall and Oates. Where have these two been all of our life?

Could the signed in name also be able to use the no-frills? So you don't have to sign out to pull things like ^^^

Luckily "Wayne Gretz" said that - whereas my fake name is Wanye.

There are a couple things on our to do list that are coming out in the next 5 weeks. They are pretty huge in our minds - then we will reassess this edit feature. In the meantime all we wants is Oilerz winz

And we thank you for getting your crew to come here. Despite the fact we have no advertising we are growing at a pretty amazing clip. This is thanks to our readers.

That's what you get for having a quality Oilers site, instead of feeding us regurgitated tripe.

I remember reading a piece from Joanne Ireland last year where she mentioned that "Nothing's gonna break my stride" was the Oilers good luck charm and a tune they'd play after victories.

So, last night heard Private Eyes from Hall and Oates so I;m thinking someone dug up say a "Best of '83 or 84" CD or else they've got an 80's mix on the float.

I got the impression they played the song "Private Eyes" to let all the guys in the locker room know there is a camera around immediately after the game (PPV). NOT because of Hall and Oates' musical mastery.

And I got the impression that was the last # retirement we'll see for quite some time. Lets hope 83, 13 & 89 are among the next few to hang in the rafters... of RX2!

They played that first.

@ Wanye Gretz: Seriously, how is it that you're only now discovering the wonderful world of Hall & Oats? They taught me to feel feelings. "She's Gone" is heart-wrenching. Please take a moment to experience one of my favourite references to Hall & Oats...

In the spirit of edit button whining, and as a long time reader and one time commenter, I have several complaints and grievances to address.

1. More pictures. Why stop at one picture per post? I would like to see at least one multi picture post per day, and at least one all-picture post per week.

2. More obscure music. Hall and Oates was a good start, but why not go even further?

And finally,

3. More frequent hero/goat drafts. I hate someone new practically every day.

1. This can be done and I will do my best. 2. Do people like music on here? I didn't know that. 3. Oh hells no! You have to pick your goat and star and then stick to that all year. I went back and looked Adam and see you didn't go on record. Who did you pick?

Please feel free to leave more suggestions folks.

@ Hockey Gods: It's just unfortunate that out of all the great music available, they chose Nickleback.

The biggest joy the video brought me was Jason Smith. *sigh* he and I could have been so happy together but neither of us are good at the long distance thing.

@ Hockey Gods: That's a great clip; absolute tingles watching it. It's gut-wrenching to think how that may not happen again for a long time. Totally inspirational; should be played to the Oil before every game. 'Here it is, men; this is what wanting it looks like.'

Couldn't agree more, I was so jacked after watching I went out and played road hockey with neighbor kids. Boy did I show them a desire to win, there was bodies flyin all over the place.

I used to hate Nickelback until they played that song in SCFG7 2006. True story. I now own that CD and play it regularly. But I rarely play Savin Me - that's for special occasions.

@ The Towel Boy:

Honestly - no. I was listening on the radio the way home to Tencer & he mentioned they were on a bit of a hot streak. After looking at the schedule & using the Chicago game as a start it doesn't look that bad.

9 wins, 6 losses - 1 OTL. 6-4 in the last 10. I really hope they can do better in the next 10. But with 3 afternooon games & a Wild, Habs (home, but away game)& Wings game in there .500 might be what we have.

Tue Jan 20, 2009 Home - Blue Jackets Tue Jan 27, 2009 Home - Sabres Fri Jan 30, 2009 Home - Wild Sun Feb 1, 2009 Home - Predators (afternoon) Tue Feb 3, 2009 Home - Oilers Thu Feb 5, 2009 Away - Blues Sat Feb 7, 2009 Away - Red Wings (afternoon) Sun Feb 8, 2009 Away - Wild (afternoon) Wed Feb 11, 2009 Home - Canadiens Sat Feb 14, 2009 Away - Kings
