ice-girls-please

Finally the NHL season officially begins tonight, and one of the classiest players to ever play, Joe Sakic, will be honoured in Colorado. It still bothers me that the Avs raised Ray Bourque’s jersey when he only played there for two years, but Sakic is a no-brainer and that is a ceremony I’m gonna watch.

Here is just another reason why the Oilers need Ice Girls. Check out this video on the Dallas Stars web page. It promotes their Ice Girls.

The best part about this in that on CBC satellite radio host Jeff Marek and Cassie Campbell called this, "soft porn". Marek even twittered this: "Yup, that Avery sure was a pig wasn't he, Dallas Stars?"

Marek, I know you work for mother corp, but please. Soft porn? It’s girls in bikinis, sure the music and acting ability was similar to what you’d see in one of Wanye’s home made videos, but it was far from pornish. Come on Jeff go to the beach some time my friend you can see that every weekend. While those two sticks in the mud frown at this video, I applaud the Stars Ice Girls, because now I know every one of their names. It will make watching Stars’ games on TV much more enjoyable when I watch Sarah, Yvette, Cassie or Kaime shoveling the ice.

No offence to Goggles, who I featured on Just A Game last year, but I’d rather watch ice girls scrape the ice, than guys in tracksuits.

On ice things to look for...

  • Everyone is picking Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Alex Ovechkin to be top three in scoring, but who will be fourth? There are plenty of options, but I’ll go with Joe Thornton. He’s never played with a sniper like Dany Heatley, and if he can help Jonathon Cheechoo tally 56 goals, look for Heatley to surpass 60 for the first time in his career.
  • Ryan Getzlaf, Nicklas Backstrom and Pavel Datsyuk are the other three I see finishing fourth or in the top-five. Look for Rick Nash to have a break out year and get 90+ points, if he stays healthy.
  • I think Marc Savard will have a drop off in production without Kessel. Lucic isn’t as good of a scorer. Same goes for Zack Parise.
  • Ilya Kovalchuk will be the most talked about trade bait all season long. He’s entering the final year of his contract, and the speculation will be brutal, but don’t expect the Thrashers to deal him unless they are completely out of the playoff hunt in Feb/March.
  • The Caps might have a Triple Crown line, if Bruce Boudreau keeps Ovechkin, Backstrom and Alex Semin together all year. Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan along with Thornton, Heatley and Devon Setoguchi are the other lines that will be battle for "best line" moniker.
  • The Avs will finish last. They are very thin up front and on the backend.
  • Most of the Oiler fans who begged to get rid of MacTavish, will be begging TSN to use him more than the 25 games he is scheduled to appear on.
  • If the Oilers have two guys with more than 27 goals like Brownlee said, then they will for sure make the playoffs. He thinks Comrie and Penner will tickle the twine this frequently.
  • Dion Phaneuf will score 20 goals, but the Flames will struggle to score goals.
  • After having only one 50-goal man last year, we’ll see four guys top fifty, and hopefully we’ll see six players with 100 points.
  • Stortini will be in the top five in fighting majors, and he’ll score eight goals.
  • Tom Gilbert will get 40 points again, yet he’ll be the player most often in Edmonton that the Oilers should trade.
  • I hate to say it, but the Human Rake will make the Flyers a legitimate Cup contender. Ray Emery will fight at least once this year, and Flyer fans will adore him.
  • There will be at least three epic Nation parties for PPV games this year.
  • bingofuel and Wanye’s new layout of the Nation will blow your minds and we’ll see even more interaction during the season (here's a slight teaser).
  • Andrew Cogliano will be over 40% in the draw this year, of course he’ll take way fewer draws than last season.
  • Canada will win the gold in Olympic men’s hockey, and it will kill some Oiler fans to have to cheer for the Human Rake, Phaneuf and Heatley for two weeks.
  • Only four of these predictions will actually happen and I’ll be mocked mercilessly come April, which will entice me to make even bolder predictions come playoff time.

All I know is that if Ovechkin knocks Heatley out, steals the puck from Phaneuf, dekes Pronger, and scores on Canada, I'm going to cheer.

If Gilbert sticks to his promise of putting more pucks on net, he will be a sleeper pick in the fantasy pools for sure. The Oil need Grebs and Gilbs to develop their offensive instincts and help the team out more.

Agreed. Is he getting better about looking everywhere except the camera? His first night (Leafs preseason game)he seemed to look everywhere except the camera. Even when looking straight ahead his eyes were off camera. I wonder if the regulars were messing with him?

Really? I think their offence will be fine, coverage in the defensive zone is what those two have to work on.

Thornton was the first overall pick in my fantasy pool. He is going to shoot the lights out this year. Those top three 'locks' had best play very well indeed if they want to keep pace.

I keep saying it but the top ten highest scoring teams all made the playoffs last year. The oil dont have posession long enough and dont keep it in the offensive zone long enough. Without these two things even the best defenses will get abused.

The music in the ice girls video was more pornish than the eye candy. Now if they started to do some pillow fighting & break into a game of jello twister on the bow of the boat then I would have to call it 'soft porn'

@ Halibut: Truth on the defense side. I do think that they are capable of much more on the offense side (esp. Grebs). Perhaps they are worrying about D too much and in turn holding themselves back offensively. I think Quinn will encourage their offense this year.

I still don't get the hate on Heatley from Oilers fans. Sens fans, sure. But Oilers fans have no reason to hate him.

He never wanted to play here. We weren't on his OK-list. The Oilers decided he would improve the team and tried anyway - good for them. And Bryan Murray, having no other options, accepted - good for him. Of course, Heatley didn't budge and held out for his team of choice.

He gave the "it's not you, it's me" speech about Edmonton but we all knew he didn't want to play here. But, to his credit, he NEVER wanted to play here. We weren't on his list.

Blame the person who leaked this. Don't blame Heatley. Leave that for Sens fans.

Are you Heatly's brother or his girlfriend? It is our right and obligation to hate any player who doesn't play here and our right to hate players who play here is we want to.

The song you're so vain was written about Heatly, wasn't it?

@ ebi: I get that. The Oil getting ditched by Heater is kind of like the nerd who asks the head cheerleader to the prom and gets turned down cold. He might not be real fond of her after that and people might even understand why (once they stopped laughing), but no one would think it was cool if he started writing trash about her with a sharpie on the outside of her locker. It's his problem, not hers. For those in Edmonton who hate Heater, you need to work it out. The fact that you feel rejected is your issue, not his.

That said, he's a spoiled brat who weaseled his way out of a signed contract. Twice. If you choose to wage war on all such weasels equally, then power to you. Good luck carrying around that big ball of hate for the rest of your life.

By doing what he did, he made a hard situation worse. It gave the "nobody wants to play in Edmonton" statement wings. So, everytime he comes here, he shall get the old finger to go with a lot of screaming and booing going his way....

@ Jimbob: TV and Reporter are not words should be linked. At best those on TV are called talent. The actual reports are written by real reporters. One does not call Bob MacKenzie as TV Reporter, he is a reporter.

since most TV Sports types are either washed up players, unemployed coaches, or jock wanabees, getting a job because you are a washed up female athelete is nothing to hold against her.

I dont see it in the comments I've seen from Quinn. I think ideally he wants both from them but the biggest thing they'll be working on is coverage in their own zone. I'd expect Gilbert's numbers to drop a bit this year if both Vishnovsky and Souray are healthy the whole way.

If there is one area that fans in Edmonton should be proud of it is Defense.

remember there are 30 teams int he league, so all things being equal, every teams best defenseman should be in the 1-30 range, then the second best defenseman in the 31-60 range, and their third and fourth best (second pairing) should be in the 61-120 range.

Our top four: #9 Souray 53 pts #19 Gilbert 45 pts #29 Grebs 39 pts #50 Visnovsky 31 pts(in 50 games)

I want more out of our forwards. Let's appreciate the few bright spots we have on our team and recognize that the only other team that had four defensmen in the top fifty was San Jose.

If Visnovsky hadn't gotten hurt our entire top four could have been in the top thirty. That's impressive.
