ice-girls-please

Finally the NHL season officially begins tonight, and one of the classiest players to ever play, Joe Sakic, will be honoured in Colorado. It still bothers me that the Avs raised Ray Bourque’s jersey when he only played there for two years, but Sakic is a no-brainer and that is a ceremony I’m gonna watch.

Here is just another reason why the Oilers need Ice Girls. Check out this video on the Dallas Stars web page. It promotes their Ice Girls.

The best part about this in that on CBC satellite radio host Jeff Marek and Cassie Campbell called this, "soft porn". Marek even twittered this: "Yup, that Avery sure was a pig wasn't he, Dallas Stars?"

Marek, I know you work for mother corp, but please. Soft porn? It’s girls in bikinis, sure the music and acting ability was similar to what you’d see in one of Wanye’s home made videos, but it was far from pornish. Come on Jeff go to the beach some time my friend you can see that every weekend. While those two sticks in the mud frown at this video, I applaud the Stars Ice Girls, because now I know every one of their names. It will make watching Stars’ games on TV much more enjoyable when I watch Sarah, Yvette, Cassie or Kaime shoveling the ice.

No offence to Goggles, who I featured on Just A Game last year, but I’d rather watch ice girls scrape the ice, than guys in tracksuits.

On ice things to look for...

  • Everyone is picking Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Alex Ovechkin to be top three in scoring, but who will be fourth? There are plenty of options, but I’ll go with Joe Thornton. He’s never played with a sniper like Dany Heatley, and if he can help Jonathon Cheechoo tally 56 goals, look for Heatley to surpass 60 for the first time in his career.
  • Ryan Getzlaf, Nicklas Backstrom and Pavel Datsyuk are the other three I see finishing fourth or in the top-five. Look for Rick Nash to have a break out year and get 90+ points, if he stays healthy.
  • I think Marc Savard will have a drop off in production without Kessel. Lucic isn’t as good of a scorer. Same goes for Zack Parise.
  • Ilya Kovalchuk will be the most talked about trade bait all season long. He’s entering the final year of his contract, and the speculation will be brutal, but don’t expect the Thrashers to deal him unless they are completely out of the playoff hunt in Feb/March.
  • The Caps might have a Triple Crown line, if Bruce Boudreau keeps Ovechkin, Backstrom and Alex Semin together all year. Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan along with Thornton, Heatley and Devon Setoguchi are the other lines that will be battle for "best line" moniker.
  • The Avs will finish last. They are very thin up front and on the backend.
  • Most of the Oiler fans who begged to get rid of MacTavish, will be begging TSN to use him more than the 25 games he is scheduled to appear on.
  • If the Oilers have two guys with more than 27 goals like Brownlee said, then they will for sure make the playoffs. He thinks Comrie and Penner will tickle the twine this frequently.
  • Dion Phaneuf will score 20 goals, but the Flames will struggle to score goals.
  • After having only one 50-goal man last year, we’ll see four guys top fifty, and hopefully we’ll see six players with 100 points.
  • Stortini will be in the top five in fighting majors, and he’ll score eight goals.
  • Tom Gilbert will get 40 points again, yet he’ll be the player most often in Edmonton that the Oilers should trade.
  • I hate to say it, but the Human Rake will make the Flyers a legitimate Cup contender. Ray Emery will fight at least once this year, and Flyer fans will adore him.
  • There will be at least three epic Nation parties for PPV games this year.
  • bingofuel and Wanye’s new layout of the Nation will blow your minds and we’ll see even more interaction during the season (here's a slight teaser).
  • Andrew Cogliano will be over 40% in the draw this year, of course he’ll take way fewer draws than last season.
  • Canada will win the gold in Olympic men’s hockey, and it will kill some Oiler fans to have to cheer for the Human Rake, Phaneuf and Heatley for two weeks.
  • Only four of these predictions will actually happen and I’ll be mocked mercilessly come April, which will entice me to make even bolder predictions come playoff time.

1. Make as many predictions as possible, remember the ones that come true forget the ones that don't.

2. Call yourself Eklund and start a website.

I have no idea either why Canadian teams aren't jumping on the "ice girls" thing, either. Yes, I understand that ice girls are typically used to help teams in cities that do not have a rapid fan base, but this really is a no-brainer regardless an additional draw for ticket sales.

And its certainly not soft-porn. *shakes head*

Hey Gregor or Robin,

Who are the Oilers using in practice as penalty killers after Horcoff and Moreau, and which defencemen?

Vish and Grebs are both awful at the pk, that was as much of a problem as the faceoffs last year..

Oilers should trade:

1. Stortini for Laraque 2. MacIntyre for Brashear 3. Staios for Oduya 4. Gagner for Okposo 5. Release Nilsson. Sign Carter 6. Trade Pisani and Pouliot for Wayne Simmons 7. Trade Khabibulin for Ray Emery 8. Call up Theo Peckham 9. Trade Moreau for Mike Grier 10. Sign Michael Peca for cheap

I dare TSN.ca to call us too "soft" or too "easy" to play against after these moves. This gives us character, power and grit up and down the roster.

I believe it's what you call the "Reggie Evans Effect".

It could work for the Oilers. All it takes is a couple players then BAM! Different philosophy and different make-up of an entire team. Actually... it really only takes that one guy. Simmonds from LA i'm a huge fan of.

@ David S: @ David S: Austin

Your on glue!!! I wouldn't take Laraque for free! Do you not watch hockey! He is terrible at his job! Big deal if he wins a fight against the other tough guy! It's the guy who is willing to get under the skin of the other team. If a small player took a cheap shot at one of Laraque's players he would go to there tough guy and ask to fight! What good does that do. When was the last time Laraque actually goated someone into a penalty! He is useless at his job. He is even useless at radio. Stortini does everything right, works hard every night, responsible in his own end, goats other teams into penalties becasue he has the face you want to punch, and wins half of his fights.AAAANNNNNDDD, he is only around 24. Which means he will win more fights with experience. He was the MVP behind Roloson last year!

A few thoughts:

Is there a gay-er way to say someone scores, than "tickle the twine"? Maybe only if you mention the player is wearing "silks".

Anyone calling that video "soft porn" clearly has a low opinion on what soft porn should be.

I loved seeing those old flames jerseys tonight. I have many happy memories of us making them our ice girls in those jerseys.

$20 x 17400 bums in the seats = $348 000 PER GAME

Scuba.... what heidi fleiss math are you using...

Bottom line is the american NHL teams are better marketers, in comparison to lazy Canadian NHl hockey teams. But when your target market at Rexall Place, is well Rexall customers, aging population..... then 630 ched fits for the radio for these aging, denture, overweight, diabetes, arthritis, viagara purchasing demographic....I mean customers.

If you had Ice Girls, then it would be a legal liability (heart attacks) as they would be more exciting than the team. No AED devices are located visibly (as per US rinks and airports) at RP1.

Gregor, you have stated that LaForge has said on your show that Northlands is in charge of ice operations and they have no control of this area.

Hmmmm.... lets asks some questions.. here

If Northlands controls the Ice, why do the Oilers have Craig Tkachuk, and the NHL provides Dan Craig?????

If Northlands controls the parking on the south side, why do the Oilers control the northside parking....

If Northlands controls the building, why does Katz have his company banner and name on the building...

If Northlands controls the building, why does this organization buy out Don Metz' Aquila company and make him Vice President to run the music, audio, lighting and video.

If Northlands controls the building, why is it the Oilers that lobbied the provincial government for 3 million dollars for a new dressing room ?

If Northlands controls the building, why do the Oilers have a cheer - power team, for ad sponsored revenue generated contests ($$$$) and t shirts being shot into the crowd.

If Northlands controls the building, why do the Oilers have advertising on the Zamboni's - money goes to the Oilers....

LaForge is not interested in pursuing Ice Girls, and has passed the political buck to Northlands, whom will not address the issue.

Gregor, have LaForge answer these questions and then have him call Dianne Greenough at the Esks to formulate an attractive professional group opposite the football season - no brainer.

I have no idea why you guys put stock into what he says. He writes about past players which is great, but he has no better understanding of the game than most of us. I'll take Gregor or Brownlee's stance on the team any day since they actually talk to coaches, players and seem to know more about the systems and such.

Lowetide is a unique writer, with interesting angles, but he is far from an X and O guy.
