GDB XI: Clash on the coast

I'm not one to dwell on the past. That would mean the revisiting of so many addictions that I'd most likely relapse. Like, into my World of Warcraft addiction. And no one here wants that. Who would update OilersNation?

So rather than dwell on the Oilers' third straight loss against the Calgary Flames in the latest Battle of Alberta tilt, I'm going to focus on the eleventh game of the 2009/10 season against the hated-as-much-as-the-Flames-if-not-more Vancouver Canucks.

Tonight is the second regular season meeting between these two hockey clubs. The Canucks are coming off a win last night against the Maple Leafs, an altogether meaningless endeavour since the Leafs have managed to tally a grand total of one point this season so far and precisely zero wins (it's hard, but I'm resisting making 75,000 Brian Burke jokes right now). This false sense of hope brings the Canucks to and even .500 so far this season.

Well la-de-freakin'-da.

While the Oilers didn't fare well against the Flames last night, we can really chalk this up to two things:

  1. H1N1 or some variant thereof: We were down a whole line last night! The Canadian government stated last week they'd start doling out vaccinations. For the love of Hemsky, please make the Oilers one of the number one priorities for shots. Old people can wait.
  2. Crappiness: I can't say I watched the whole game last night, but many in the Nation did. And many of you concluded the same thing: it just wasn't a great effort last night.

But I tend to take on the same attitude as Oilers' Jambalaya writer Smokin' Ray Burnt. He had this to say earlier today:

"With a crappy game like last night against the fLames. Expect the flu ridden Oilers to have a chip on their shoulders tonight against the Vancouver Canucks."

The Oil have had a great start to the season. My hope for tonight is that they're mad as hell and aren't going to take any BS from the Canucks. The Canucks, meanwhile, are looking for that tipping-point game to take them over .500.

Tonight's game will not help them.

Oilers 4 Canucks 2 tonight. Look for more points from PDP. But you already knew that.

Oh, and don't forget to check out what the competition is saying.

Bingofuel is the handsome cyborg who pulls all the levers behind the curtains of the OilersNation. When he isn't running the site, he's plugged into a wall socket, recharging. Or Brownlee and Wanye are playing "keep away" with him. He gets little to no respect.

@Robin Brownlee

Robin, do you think there's gonna be any intensity to this game? Over the last few years, the Nucks vs. Oil games usually got quite spirited, but the last game here at RX1 was sorely lacking.

After shooting against the human sieve that is any goalie in a Leaf sweater, the Vancouver Canucks will be frustrated tonight against a real goaltender (that includes the Delorian).

Do you mean they are the Rompers or Rompees? If it is the later well, your pessimism is unwelcome here. And if the former, well then I like the cut of your jib.

Now can someone please tell me what the hell I was just talking about? I blacked out.. What happened?

I'm guessing 3-2 Oil.

Brule is in tonight. Anyone have a beat on the line combos?

It's hard to say any goalie is back, i.e. luongo, if the come back game was against the leafs, who can't score at the best of times and who have folks in goal unable to stop beach balls with snow shovels. Teams of poor scorers tend to telegraph moves, hurry shots, take to long to shoot, shoot at the goalie and otherwise make goalies look better than they are.

Anyway, can't wait for the game. Even a poor game like yesterdays, got me 75 points on the oilers site hockey pool.

Sigh, wish I could do as well on the other five I'm in. Go Oilers!!!!!

Oh, Wellwood's hurt too. Never mind...

I just don't understand the love for this team. I mean, I get it with Calgary. They have some legitimate stars (I hate to admit it).

With Vancouver, you have a really good regular season goalie, and these two: http://thorunna.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/shining_twins_1.jpg

The really sad thing is most Canuck fans are probably absolutely ecstatic after last nights "win". I have no idea why they hate the Leafs so much. I guess it just goes back to how insanely insecure they are about their own team. But man if the Canucks play the same way tonight as they did yesterday this game is going to be a walk in the park. Unless, you know, the Oilers play like garbage like they did last night. I'm expecting Stortini to have a whale of a game tonight. Look for him to be all over the ice.

Wow that needle looks scary (and I work in a hospital in patient care areas). Reminds of pulp fiction scenery. I see this as sort of a pivotal game, start of a skid or getting right back up in the saddle game. 5-4 Edmonton (game will open up once they get tired of banging and crashing in first period).

4-2 Vancouver.

If Edmonton wins this game tonight (JDD will pretty much have to steal one I think) that would be amazing.

This could be the first tough stretch of games for them, with the flu bug running rampant and injuries taking their toll, the conditions are ripe for the 1st losing streak of the season.

LoL....Nice pic...A cast on the foot of one of the twins and it would have been perfect.

Go Oil...Annihilate them...Demoralize the Canucks and there fickle fans once and for all.

Keep in mind it's still the regular season. They have far better things to do than watch hockey. There are latte's and sushi to be had! Until the playoffs anyway. That's when they come out of the woodwork.

We have to have more guys into this game tonight than last. I know the flu knocked them out for the Flames game and maybe most of the BJ game, but I really hope we see more get up and go from players that are not named Penner, Gagner and Ales.

Ever seen someone from Calgary try and use a computer? It's like watching a monkey with down syndrome try and perform open heart surgery. It's not pretty and anyone in the room ends up being embarrassed and scarred for life.
