GDB XII: Stopping a snowball

Jason Gregor
October 27 2009 01:47PM

The Oilers will try to stop a two game losing streak versus North West opponents tonight, when the surprising Colorado Avalanche come to town.

The Avs are 8-1-2 this year, and 4-1-2 on the road and overall they are averaging 3.4 goals per game, and giving up only 2.2 The Avs are similar to the Oilers in that they have consistently been out shot.

The Oilers have been a bit better in shot differential the past few games, but they lost both of those.

Mike Comrie returns to the lineup tonight and here is how they practiced this morning.

Penner — Gagner — Hemsky
Comrie — Horcoff — O’Sullivan
Jacques — Brule — Nilsson
Moreau —Cogliano — Stortini

Gilbert — Grebeshkov
Smid — Visnovsky
Strudwick — Chorney

Fernando Pisani skated with the team for the first time in almost a month, but he needs a few more practices before he is ready. He could make his debut in Boston on Saturday or Long Island on Monday.

When they do activate him, they will probably put Souray on retroactive LTIR in order to have enough cap space to activate Pisani.

The suggestion that the Avs are coming back to earth is off-base at this point. They haven’t lost a game in regulation since Oct 8th, and since then they have won six and lost in OT in Minnesota.

The Avs have beaten the Wings twice in the last week, and they also have wins over the Bruins and Sharks this season. Their special teams have been great so far.

They are 7th on the PP with 12 goals in 45 chances for 26.7%, and their PK is 6th at 84.3%, and they were a perfect 8-8 on the PK v. Detroit this past Saturday.

Craig Anderson has played in all eleven games for the Avs and his .936 SV % and 2.14 GGA are both in the top ten. The Oilers will have to get him moving side-to-side if they want to get some past him. He is a big guy who plays the angles very well, and they won’t beat him from the outside.

Money management

Pat Quinn was 30 minutes late for his usual press conference this morning, and the reason was he and the coaching staff was meeting with management discussing what they will do with Pisani. Pisani might be ready Thursday, but it’s more realistic we will see him Saturday, and I’m guessing the organization was discussing who comes out, but also how they can fit him in money-wise.

It is quite clear you haven't had this new seasonal flu. I had it about three weeks ago and am not fully over it yet. Listening to the coughing and hacking in the background of some of the interviews on Oilers Lunch, it seems the worst is not over yet. The good thing about living in Mom's basement and eating whatever she drops down the stair means you shouldn't be exposed to it.

By the by, I hope the Esks were watching the game and they would get a lesson from the Av's on open field tackles and line blocking form their work in front of the net.

Gotta credit the avs... really simple road game played to a T.

Disturbingly.... their organization has a young talented team AND a ton of cap room and flexibility, if the fans start showing up in denver again...

never mind........ its kind of depressing.

As much as I love #10, if this keeps up I wonder if we could pull:

Horcoff for Nylander & Steckel

On the other hand maybe Horc should just go back to mexico and get a new stick.

Sigh

I'm not convinced the Oilers can resign all the guys they need to be viable. Things CAN work. Will they? I have been conditioned to brace for the worst because of this team. As hopeful as I want to be I keep coming back to thinking it will get mis-handled like a Horcoff one-timer.

actually it was not meant as a personal slam, more of a general one. I forgot the - - before and after. Oh well, My laptop has symbols in three colours on the keys but not the squiggle for humour.(not I know how to access the green and blue ones, might have to read the manual one day. SIGH

Not as much as I'm of having it. Bye the bye, you read about the thirteen year old hockey player in Ontario who died in two days of this flu? Personally I'd rather lose a few hockey games than bury a few hockey players.

Guys like Brandon Dubinsky (1.85) and Drew Stafford (1.9) resigned cheap 2 year deals. Gagner will get more than that, but I see Cogliano and Brule in that range.

I bought a beer and sat down... twenty-five seconds later the game was over.

Two points. One: I knew the high shooting percentage would level out; but why all at once...during the same week. Two: How come Colorado can rebuild a team as well in two years as the Oilers in twenty?

I expect you will see more and more, Comery got only 1.55 this year. If the Cap goes down the 10 - 15% of the rumour rumbles, you will see more and more small contracts.

Went to first game of the year tonight and it was not too fun to watch.

JFJ was only guy I noticed he tried to make hits.

Effort was there for some of the guys, but they looked like the had no confidence and weak passes and turnovers.

3 major missed called from Refs! Terrible!

Not to make excuses for the Oil but there were some bad calls!

Now this is no time for paronoia. Anybody didn't think H1N1 was involved must live in a cave.

Well at least they didn't just call it an upper body injury ;-]

So now he's given it to Vish? All we need is our best rushing D-man down with the Flu just as soon as he returns to full form. To baad a few refs, like the ones who worked tonight could get the . . . oh, maybe that's why they couldn't raise their arms to call tackling and boarding penalties.

The death totals? Funny, nobody gets excited over the death totals of the regular flu which kills more than 10 times the amount of people that H1N1 ever has.
