GDB XIII: Wings of change, perhaps

It was a mixed bag at the morning skate today, as the Oilers try to end a three game losing streak against the under-performing Detroit Red Wings.

It looks like Pat Quinn will change his lineup again:

Penner — Horcoff — Hemsky
Cogliano — Gagner — Nilsson
Jacques — Brule — O’Sullivan
Moreau — Stortini — MacIntyre

Strudwick — Gilbert
Grebeshkov — Chorney
Peckham — Smid

Mike Comrie didn’t skate this morning, but that doesn’t mean he won’t play, since there has been a few occasions this season where a guy didn’t go in the morning, but played that night. Lubomir Visnovsky didn’t skate either, but he is out for sure with the flu.

Fernando Pisani and Steve Staios skated today. Pisani could go, but he was bagged skated at the end of practice which means MacIntyre might play tonight. Staios skated, but it was his first real practice with the team, and it is good to see he is making progress, but I don’t see how they can play him tonight.

Based on what I saw on the PP units, it looks like Horcoff will indeed be playing with Hemsky and Penner. They were the first unit with O’Sullivan and Grebeshkov on the back end.

The second unit had Nilsson, Gagner and Brule with Gilbert and Chorney on the backend.

The Oilers spent extra time on shots coming out of the corners. The coaches were stressing getting more pucks on net, but also getting more shots through traffic and on goal. The Oilers have had far too many shots blocked the past three games, and Fleming was driving that home this morning.

Quinn had separate meetings with Gagner, Cogliano and Nilsson and the message was he heard they did well together a few years ago, and is hoping they can rekindle that production. The key for those three is puck support. When they were scoring they supported one another very well, if they get to spread out in the offensive zone they won’t produce.

The Wings have given up 35 goals in ten games so far, and their goaltending is highly suspect. They have played a bit better of late, and it is only a matter of time before they are back in an actual playoff spot.

After slow starts Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk are back scoring. Zetterberg has ten points in ten games, while Datsyuk has seven in the eight games he has played.

Fishing for Charity

If you are like fishing and the Oilers you might want to head to www.campusauctionmarket.com Today at 3 p.m. the bidding ends to have a chance to fish at one of the best places in Alberta,

You get two nights and three days of fishing at Fortress Lake, in the Rocky Mountains. You and three of your buddies will fly in and enjoy three days of fishing, great food and good laughs.

This is true. Two points is two points and I'm all for that. But I'm also one of those people that would rather see the team play their hearts out for 60 minutes and lose 2-1 than for them to crap the bed and just barely squeek out and undeserved shootout win.

Maybe I'm just too picky, especially for an Oilers fan.

The believe in difference circumstances Gagner, for one, would not be playing because he has the flu, least it sounded like it on the Oilers Lunch were he said he wasn't feeling well but was going to play. Course there was no one else to fill in.

@Librarian Mike Me, I think the mojo has returned, sort of. We scored 7 goes tonight and still won. Some how we got to keep the D men away from the edges of our net when the play is in the opposite corner. Good thing Khabby is a vet, otherwise his confidence should be shot. What's that, seven own goals in thirteen games? Thats a half point on the goals against average.

@BarryS

I think I just got so excited that we were dominating the first two periods, that when they started to suck the bag in the third I crashed harder than a dope fiend looking for a d*ck to suck for his next fix. The ups and downs of being an Oiler fan! Bad for the heart.

Either way they do look to be turning it around, and the flu looks to be in it's death throws which can only mean good things (hopefully) for the next couple games at least. Until something else happens and the train is derailed once again.

They came out flying tonight, and that's certainly an improvement over last year.

@Rigger

- What's wrong with a little addiction now and then, after all, hockey has all the signs of addiction. Costs a great deal of money, causes unnatural highs and lows, can wreck relationships and often ends in depression. Sometimes it even causes death, heart attacks. -

Anyone else mildly nauseated by the fact the The Hobgoblin is apparently a "very sweaty man" who has holes drilled in the bottom of his skates to allow the sweat to pour out? Jesus, that's some creepy factoids you got there Ferraro...

Ferraro was harping on that earlier this year, too... Or maybe it was someone on CBC. Anyway, it's not the first mention of it.

Anyone else feel bad for how hard Ferraro was riding Detroit's goalie? (Howard?) I mean... yeah, he was brutal, but geez...

This was mentioned earlier in the season when Khabby was pulled for the third period of a game and Quinn commented on it. Seems to me a game or go they showed one of those blue five gallon jugs which he has to drink every day. During games he drinks pedialite, what you give young kids for dehydration during fevers. I think this was TSN's first broadcast so they had to bring it up as all the others did. After all, they have to have more to talk about than the flu.

Rebounds and more rebounds to the other teams not looking around players, am i the only one that can see khabibulin alomost lost the game again. I wonder when Quinn will grow a set and not worry about tamballine lookin over his sholder and make khabibulin earn the number one spot. I know JDD has.

I think you need sleep your brain is fuzzy. Take away yet another own goal, the coughups, the lazy plays, the passes to open opposition forwards in our own zone, the lack of clearing players from in front of the net and we win 5 - 0. The problem is not Khabibulin, the problem is the other 18 guys.
