GDB XIV: Taming the bear

Jason Gregor
October 31 2009 10:04AM

Thankfully there aren’t many of these 11 am starts, especially on a Saturday Halloween. I wonder how many of you will be drinking the hair of the dog this morning, beer and clam, trying to ease the throbbing in your head? And hopefully the girl or guy you met last night didn’t just look good in their costume.

The Oilers overall record in the afternoon isn’t great, but in the last six years they’ve been much better.

The Oilers are a combined 7-20-3-1 in Boston, and they haven’t won there since 1996/97, granted they have only played there six times since then going 0-4-1-1. Last year they lost in OT to the Bruins 1-0 at Rexall Place.

Mike Comrie and Lubomir Visnovsky will take the morning skate. Yesterday, Louie Debrusk said on my show that Visnovsky wasn’t on the trip, but he texted me late last night and said he missed him and indeed he was, so he and Comrie will be game time decisions.

It doesn’t look like Pisani will be activated for this game, and he says he is healthy, but the medical staff must disagree or he is out because of salary restrictions. Too bad, because Pisani has four points in three career games v. the Bruins.

No one on the Oilers has more than two career goals v. the Bruins, except for Sheldon Souray, and he won’t play. Comrie, Visnovsky, Ethan Moreau and Shawn Horcoff each have two, while Patrick O’Sullivan has one.

Ales Hemsky has never scored v. the Bruins, and neither has Dustin Penner, although Penner has only played them once in his career so far.

The Bruins special teams are killing them right now. Their PP is 27th at 14.3% while their PK is 24th. The Oilers are better in both categories sitting 16th in PK, and 13th on the PP at 21.3%.

Don’t be surprised if the Oilers see Tukka Rask in goal today. Matt Kalman from www.thebruinsblog.net said yesterday there is a 70 per cent chance we will see Rask today. Tim Thomas has struggled early, so Claude Julien might go with the rookie.

Another side note...The Bruins have basically been alternating, wins and losses, and if that trend continues then they should win today, but the Oilers have been bucking trends all season, especially Penner, so we will see if they can hand the Bruins their first losing streak of the season.

JJ Hebert tells me Visnovsky and Pisani will be both take the pre-game skate. Like Gregor said, Pisani is ready to play, but salary is a consideration.

*Yawns* Okay, this is way to early to watch a hockey game.

Just to kick things off, anyone else think it's fair to say that Chara is the scariest player in the league, in terms of a talent/toughness/weird-looking ratio?

Beer and clam sounds good about now.

As for the game itself we can't beat the Bruins, but at the sametime we can't quit like we did against the Wings. We need 60 minutes.

We need a quick start again today, because we seem to have a problem maintaining effort through 60 minutes. Since that last Calgary game, we have nothing left in the the last half of games. I really hope it's just flu-related. 4-3 oilers today!

Pisani activated off LTIR, Souray placed on LTIR... Apparently Pisani is centering Moreau and Stortini.

Robin/Jason - Robin's comment made me think of something - what would the league do in a situation where a team activated a player off of IR, and that pushed the team over the cap limit, but wasn't caught until the game was being played? Could a situation like that ever happen, or would the league catch it instantly? And supposing the team "snuck" the player onto the roster (either purposely or mistakenly) without clearing it with the league? I realize there are plenty of "what-ifs" here, but out of curiousity, what would the league do? Fine? Suspension? Something else?

Thanks guys.

Probably because the guy he is replacing at center can't win a draw for the life of him.

Souray's on retro-actively to the day he got hurt, meaning he could be activated rather soon. Unfortunately for him, it doesn't sound like that's the case.

Think so? I was reading some of the 'vintage' content from way back the other day and I feel it is so bad every one who read articles in those days deserved their money back.

What's funny about the dead audio is you know the announcers have been told there is a problem and just to continue to rattle on. Which brings us to an early question:

If Gene Principe tells a joke and no one can hear it - did it really happen?

hahaha I remember that game. 11 AM on a Sunday or some such thing. I hate matinee games, why does the NHL insist on subjecting us to them.

Also - could they possibly have no sound the entire first period?

Guaranteed someone uses 'the sounds of silence' as a joke when they return.
