GDB XIV: Taming the bear

Jason Gregor
October 31 2009 10:04AM

Thankfully there aren’t many of these 11 am starts, especially on a Saturday Halloween. I wonder how many of you will be drinking the hair of the dog this morning, beer and clam, trying to ease the throbbing in your head? And hopefully the girl or guy you met last night didn’t just look good in their costume.

The Oilers overall record in the afternoon isn’t great, but in the last six years they’ve been much better.

The Oilers are a combined 7-20-3-1 in Boston, and they haven’t won there since 1996/97, granted they have only played there six times since then going 0-4-1-1. Last year they lost in OT to the Bruins 1-0 at Rexall Place.

Mike Comrie and Lubomir Visnovsky will take the morning skate. Yesterday, Louie Debrusk said on my show that Visnovsky wasn’t on the trip, but he texted me late last night and said he missed him and indeed he was, so he and Comrie will be game time decisions.

It doesn’t look like Pisani will be activated for this game, and he says he is healthy, but the medical staff must disagree or he is out because of salary restrictions. Too bad, because Pisani has four points in three career games v. the Bruins.

No one on the Oilers has more than two career goals v. the Bruins, except for Sheldon Souray, and he won’t play. Comrie, Visnovsky, Ethan Moreau and Shawn Horcoff each have two, while Patrick O’Sullivan has one.

Ales Hemsky has never scored v. the Bruins, and neither has Dustin Penner, although Penner has only played them once in his career so far.

The Bruins special teams are killing them right now. Their PP is 27th at 14.3% while their PK is 24th. The Oilers are better in both categories sitting 16th in PK, and 13th on the PP at 21.3%.

Don’t be surprised if the Oilers see Tukka Rask in goal today. Matt Kalman from www.thebruinsblog.net said yesterday there is a 70 per cent chance we will see Rask today. Tim Thomas has struggled early, so Claude Julien might go with the rookie.

Another side note...The Bruins have basically been alternating, wins and losses, and if that trend continues then they should win today, but the Oilers have been bucking trends all season, especially Penner, so we will see if they can hand the Bruins their first losing streak of the season.

Another shutout loss, zero secondary scoring over the last 4 games at least, on the positive, we should have no problem signing all 3 of Brule, Gagner and Cogliano, not one of them is worth 2 million a season!

Maybe the islanders will dress Shremp, and he'll stick it to us, Robbie-style. Him and Rollie will both be sticking it to us. Oh, and Weight too. They'll all be sticking it to us.

They'd better not be laughing though - they're still the islanders.

Robbie-style...haha. Hey, in a situation where there's nobody but him and the goalie, he's deadly.

It doesn't matter where Doug Weight plays, I physically can't cheer against him. Him getting a ring was the only silver lining from the end of '06.

I said it last week when I successfully predicted the outcomes (win/loss record as a result) that they'd lose to the City of Cows, the Canuckleheads and the Av's. They barely held onto a 5-1 lead against the winged-wheels. This team DOES NOT HAVE IT. Pay heed to Pat Quinn since very early on. He said they have bad offensive habits and poor decisions in their own end. There is the odd exception here, but we're talking the majority. As I said, this team will struggle to make the playoffs .....AGAIN. I absolutely knew they'd lose today in Boston. The last win there was over 13years ago !!! Thank god I didn't bother to waste time & watch the game. Just heard the score on the radio on my way home from a delightful shopping trip.

This and that.

The game was quick, but the Bruins outskated the Oil.

Wonder what the three open Oilers were doing when four Bruins were surrounding the Oiler with the puck. Obviously not getting in position for a short pass out.

Still think there are now more good tackles in this years NHL games than there are in NFL or CFL games.

The Buzz Lightyear costumes are because of Toy Story IIID, due soon in a theatre near you.

Severely disappointed thus far, the initial success built up a false sense of security for myself, leaving now only disappointment.

On a lighter note, Detroit is up one goal on Calgary. The look of frustration on Sutter's face is sweet as honey.

Yah Yah right douche yourself bag !! You are speculating without knowing the details. Are you aware I discussed this with Terry Jones the last several games ago ? Are you aware that an informed mind can see a 2 to 3 game span where knowing the current rosters of each team, injuries, etc that it is not impossible to foresee a short window of result ? You obviously don't know me nor where my background comes from sir ! Nor do you succinctly realize that there was no forecast of an entire 80+ game season. We're talking 2-3 games !! Get a brain egghead !!

Yah right Browny. Funny indeed isn't it ? You obviously are speculating here sir ! I saw a 2-3 game stretch of results based on all that was going on, ..not predicting an 80 game season. Are you aware that I communicated the likely results of these 2 to 3 games to Terry Jones ? Obviously not ! Speculation my friend will get you nowhere through applying a hatchet job to others whose details you are not aware of. I thought you'd be wiser than to pounce on someone without knowing the circumstances. Tsk tsk. Listening to you on the air had given me a false sense of perception I guess.
