GDB XIV: Taming the bear

Jason Gregor
October 31 2009 10:04AM

Thankfully there aren’t many of these 11 am starts, especially on a Saturday Halloween. I wonder how many of you will be drinking the hair of the dog this morning, beer and clam, trying to ease the throbbing in your head? And hopefully the girl or guy you met last night didn’t just look good in their costume.

The Oilers overall record in the afternoon isn’t great, but in the last six years they’ve been much better.

The Oilers are a combined 7-20-3-1 in Boston, and they haven’t won there since 1996/97, granted they have only played there six times since then going 0-4-1-1. Last year they lost in OT to the Bruins 1-0 at Rexall Place.

Mike Comrie and Lubomir Visnovsky will take the morning skate. Yesterday, Louie Debrusk said on my show that Visnovsky wasn’t on the trip, but he texted me late last night and said he missed him and indeed he was, so he and Comrie will be game time decisions.

It doesn’t look like Pisani will be activated for this game, and he says he is healthy, but the medical staff must disagree or he is out because of salary restrictions. Too bad, because Pisani has four points in three career games v. the Bruins.

No one on the Oilers has more than two career goals v. the Bruins, except for Sheldon Souray, and he won’t play. Comrie, Visnovsky, Ethan Moreau and Shawn Horcoff each have two, while Patrick O’Sullivan has one.

Ales Hemsky has never scored v. the Bruins, and neither has Dustin Penner, although Penner has only played them once in his career so far.

The Bruins special teams are killing them right now. Their PP is 27th at 14.3% while their PK is 24th. The Oilers are better in both categories sitting 16th in PK, and 13th on the PP at 21.3%.

Don’t be surprised if the Oilers see Tukka Rask in goal today. Matt Kalman from www.thebruinsblog.net said yesterday there is a 70 per cent chance we will see Rask today. Tim Thomas has struggled early, so Claude Julien might go with the rookie.

Another side note...The Bruins have basically been alternating, wins and losses, and if that trend continues then they should win today, but the Oilers have been bucking trends all season, especially Penner, so we will see if they can hand the Bruins their first losing streak of the season.

@Jason Gregor

Actually Louie is okay. His only problem is that he's following Ferraro, who is the best.

as for Weeks. He's still new, but he sounds like he's reading a script - and has an unbelievable gift for the obvious. Listen after a goal....his insight pretty much is....what that goal now makes the score. Thanks, Kev.

What's worse? having to watch a matinee game on a Saturday morning or be at work NOT watching or listening to the game. Only reading comments....

You know, I'm glad Lucic is hurt because he'd easily put more Oilers on the shelf than the flu could ever dream of.

You know, the amazing thing is I don't think Quinn even got a penalty on that play, where as if that happened today people would want him banned from the league and thrown in jail.

If the Oilers don't listen to Quinn already, they should play footage of that hit on a permament loop in the dressing room.

As far as I know he threw that exact same hit during the first skate around in training camp just to set the tone. Notice how we haven't seen much of Mathieu Roy lately? Yeah. Exactly.

The Oil desperately need a PP right now just to have a taste of puck possesion. Maybe that might help them settle the puck down a bit. Gregor called it with the passing. Brutal

He scored on a slapper one time so I guess he figures he should do it more.

Just like Grebeshkov made one spin-o-rama pass so now he thinks he's Bobby Orr out there.

He had better not pretend to be Bobby Orr out there. Quinn might have a flash back, take to the ice and end his life with another hit.

Ten shots for the Oilers....in 35 minutes...AWESOME...

Gagner, Cogliano and O'Sullivan each have two. Nilsson, Moreau, Chorney and Peckham with singles.

First line doesn't even have a shot...not good... Good news is I guess if they play a solid 3rd they can still win.

And this guy says he doesn't cheer for the Oil. Repeat after me Gregor - Let's Go Oilers, Let's Go Oilers, Let's Go Oilers.

good point. is there something physically wrong with moreau? he's been a dog this year. and there are things he has done well in the past like skate, hit, and protect the puck. haven't seen any of that this year from him
