EDIT: Oilers down a captain, Horcoff will play

The Oilers will be without their captain and possibly one of their assistants as they look for their first win of the season, against the 0-0-1 Dallas Stars.
The Stars dominated the Predators on Saturday, but couldn’t beat Dan Ellis, so it could be a good test for Nikolai Khabibulin to see if he can rebound.
Ethan Moreau wasn’t on the ice at the morning skate this morning and neither was Shawn Horcoff. Andrew Cogliano took his spot alongside Sam Gagner and Zack Stortini. Robert Nilsson skated with Gilbert Brule and Dustin Penner. Horcoff skated yesterday, so it is strange not to see him on the ice.
Marc Pouliot skated with J.F Jacques and Ales Hemsky, and if he plays there tonight then this coaching staff really wants to give every guy a clean slate. If Pouliot, after sitting out for two weeks, actually plays all game with Hemsky, then Hemsky either needs to carry the line or he we shouldn’t expect much from him offensively.
The Oilers swept the Stars at home last year winning 5-2 and 4-1. The Stars won both games in Dallas by scores of 4-3 and 4-2.
The Oilers PK was actually good against Dallas allowing only three goals on 20 chances for 85%, while the Oilers scored three PP goals on 16 chances for 18.8 %.
Last year was the first time since 1992/1993 that the Oilers swept the Stars in Edmonton.
Both the Oilers and Stars lost their first game even though they out shot the opposition. The Stars outshot the Predators 40-26, with James Neal potting both goals for the Stars.
***Update***
Just spoke with Horcoff, and he will play. He says it isn’t a big deal, and that he has a small tweak but he is just resting it.
Robert Nilsson admitted that he has to cut down on his risky plays in the defensive and neutral zones if he wants to stay in the lineup. Look for Nilsson to simplify his game in those zones, but he feels that he should generate more offence by not giving the puck away as often as he has.
Quinn explained the reason why he inserted Nilsson on the RW, and moved Cogliano on the left side with Gagner.
“I like Nilsson’s game on the right side, he generates more from that wing, and I know that Cogliano and Gagner have played together before, and played well, so this should give them both a better chance to produce.”
@AlbertaRanger
I wrote this on the other roll (for some reason even though I was refreshing my page I didn't see this new offering by Gregor untill I closed out the site and logged in again...)
Even the biggest Horcoff detractors have to shudder when they look at the lineup without Horcoff in it. Seriously: Pouliot centering Hemsky with JFJ? Is that a fourth line or a first line? Add to that, with Moreau and Pisani already on the shelf; the Oilers would be icing a forward lineup with barely over a thousand combined games played, (just a guess) and not a single guy over thirty.
I made some changes to comments. 50 comments per page, and a few display bugs should be fixed. Let bingofuel know if anything goes awry.
How does it look now?
Thanks I can see names now. Can you change the "Comments are moderated. Pretend your mom is reading over your shoulder"? Dad was scarier then mom.
The avatar still has a few letters but it only effects the comment number which I can leave without. Or can I?
@Ogden Brother Jr.
What browser are you using, btw?
ahhhhh, 50 comments per page is so much nicer.
Agreed.
IE 7
@OvenChicken8
Amen.
Gregor a little off topic but what did you think of MFC 22 on Friday?
Shweeet!
I was flipping channels and saw Gregor doing an interview on HDNet. The announcer made me laugh. best quote was: "And Gunn is taking more shots then a Japanese tourist!"
Another notable one was "And he's busier then Kanye in a liquor store!" which made me laugh cause i dont think that even makes sense. i thought Kanye was crazy, not an alcoholic.
I like it Rubbertrout. Those are good comparisons. It's time for people to stop bemoaning Horc's contract and start cheering for him. We're Oiler fans, not capologists.
Re my earlier comment. I was obviously overzealous when I said the forward lineup minus Horcoff, Pisani, and Moreau probably had only around 1000 games of combined NHL experience.
That said: Pisani has roughly 360 NHL games played. Moreau 780, and Horcoff around 550...(give or take). If Horcoff was unable to go: there would be nearly 1700 NHL games of experience on the shelf from guys who are still in their early thirties.
JFJ-Poo-Hemsky= combined 600 or so games. Hemsky with more than 400.
O'Sully-Comrie-Stone= combined 700 or so games. Comrie with over 500.
Penner-Brule-Nilsson= combined 620 or so games. Penner with around 260 games.
Cogliano-Gagner-Storts= 460 or so games.
Total combined experience if Horc couldn't skate tonight= around 2000 games. Horc, Moreau, and Pisani have nearly played as many games as the rest of the forwards combined... Yet many of us still like to pretend that it would be wise for management to ship out the "vetrans"
@DK0
Kanye blamed his actions on the henny. The HENNY! DO NOT EVER, EVER BLAME THE HENNY! That sh!t is da BOMB! If you want to blame it on something, blame it on the whiskey. Kanye West < Wanye Gretz.
@Chris
I've always said I would ship out the vets, but right now we don't have the replacements. Maybe Moreau, Staios and Pisani are close to being replaced from within, but we still need guys to step up over the course of the year and prove that.
Wow, hard to believe Pie has missed so many games that he's only coming in at 360 NHL games played.
YES!
@Ogden Brother Jr.
Sorry if bingofuel asked this already, but can you access http://gravatar.com ?
But but but... we'd have all that extra cap room and we've got all this young talent wasting away in the AHL/CHL/Europe....
Nope. Blocked, I would assume this is why I can't see any of the avatars and that I had my problem.
No matter what you think of Horcoff you have to agree that this team is a lot worse without him in the line up. There is no one else that is able to replace for a any extended period of time. Also Modano isn't playing tonight according to Matty....probably a good thing since he always seems to burn the Oil.
@Ogden Brother
I would've liked a couple extra mil to go after one of our needs that still hasn't been filled. I'd take Betts over Pisani in a heartbeat.
Marc-Andre Bergeron is a member of Les habitant.
In other news, stay tuned to the local stations to hear Adil's take on Bergeron winning the Norris trophy this season
Modano not playing should at least buy us a few face off wins ...
After Comrie lit things up pre-season, he was nigh invisible against the Flamers. WTF?
unless the game has changed drastically in the last, oh, 10 seconds or so ... the only thing MAB should win is a throat punch, to the groin.
comment as per twitter request
I suppose I should have asked people to comment with something insightful ;)
@Ogden Brother
According to Hockeydb: Pisani has played 362 regular season games. If I were to include playoff games, the experience gap between our vetrans and the kids would become even more pronounced.
@Chris
I wonder what other teams have in terms of games played by players iced? Obviously any team with Chelios and his 10000 games wouldn't be allowed.
But how about within or division?
I believe da da!!!! I have a case of the tuesdays i'm not going to be insightful till i'm out of class
And here we thought we were so clever in our development meetings making it 20 so that it was easier to catch up with only the latest convos and not have to scroll all over. But we can all agree that the new scratch and sniff ads are brilliant right?
This is an important announcement, may I please have your attention.
Carey Price has just suffered a major knee injury.
The only thing you should be studying right now is the entirety of the content posted on this website.
Your midterm will consist of identifying every single one of Wanye's pop culture references since this site was founded in Nov 2007.
The $$ was there to fill the wholes, they chose to duplicate with Comrie instead (though I am starting to think he'll have a nice little season)
Also, the roster is already full. If they wanted to bring someone else in, someone would have to leave, freeing up the cap space needed.
@Ogden Brother
The money is still there to address a hole. All they have to do is get rid of Pouliot or Nilsson or whomever they deem expendable.
I generally like what Quinn is doing. On the surface, it may seem ludicrous to play Stone on the second line ahead of Nilsson: Nilsson has more experience, more talent, and so on... That said, if the Oilers can offer a comparable effort to Saturday's tonight: they should be alright. It's about having balance. It's about having guys who can create space for your offensive playmakers.
Last season the Oilers carried four very soft players in their top six (not including Penner) who scored only 60 or 70 goals combined. Good teams never skate that many soft players in thier top six. More importantly, good teams often get between 60 and 70 goals from thier TWO top players; thus freeing up premium roster spots without sacrificing too much offence. I'm glad to see the team (through one game anyway) functioning better. Unfortunately, I fear the Oiler forward group simply lacks the experience, and the high end talent to seriously compete for anything better than 8-12th.
Andy Strickland says "Word is Edmonton is shopping D-man Ladislav Smid who would have gone to Ottawa if Heatley had agreed to go to the Oilers"
Is that to open up a spot for Peckham or to allow Strudwick to play?
He probably meant "Wanye".
Still to soon for me to laugh at that - we were so close!
Correct, sir. There's nothing we can do about that on our end. In the grand future, we might have some other ways of doing profile pics, but gravatars are quick and easy. They allow me to devote 3 years of development on the Edit Comments functionality. Optimistic guess, of course.
I remember reading somewhere that the cup winners from the last 4/5 years (or whatever)were all amoungst the oldest the oldest teams in the league.
That might explain why Smid is playing with Lubo. Trying to showcase him.
I guess we should look out for the Isles they are the fourth oldest.
As for the age thing as a whole the average in the NHL is 27.807 and we are at 27.598(17th).
What would we even get for Smid?
one third of Dany Heatley.
@Menacer
So his attitude part?
Hopefully picks so we can lose the 1.3M cap hit.
