GDB XXIII: Shooting down the hot 'Hawks

Jason Gregor
November 21 2009 04:00PM

Tonight is your second last chance to watch a regular season Oiler game at Rexall Place on a Saturday. The last time will be in a month when Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals come to town on December 19th.

And also today, one of our loyal Nation readers will win a pair of tickets for tonight’s game.

While your original thought might be, "SWEET," I feel I should prepare you in case you win.

If you plan on having a few bevies, just remember the heroin beers are $8, and you can only get two at a time. The good news is that you only need three to get a good buzz on.

Preparing for battle

The Blackhawks are 8-1-2 in their last eleven games and they’ve outscored the opposition 33-20. They have dominated in almost every category. They’ve scored 10 PP goals, while surrendering only four. They’ve taken 89 more shots during this stretch, and they’ve had 12 different goal scorers in their recent five-game winning streak.

Even their goaltending has been stellar, with Christobal Huet winning five straight with a 1.80 GAA and a .960 SV%.

You’ve become accustomed to seeing Ice Women every week here on the Nation, but you won’t see any tonight. You might get to see some R&B dancing girls though.

Reasons to believe the Oilers can win

  • Despite going 0-2 last year and getting outscored 12-3, the Oilers are 7-3 in their last ten home games v. the Hawks, and have outscored them 32-13 in the eight homes prior to last year.
  • Khabibulin is 12-7-1 v. the Hawks and is 24-13-2 against his former teams.
  • The Oilers have won seven of eleven home games, while the Hawks have only won three games on the road.
  • The Oilers should have J.F Jacques back in the line up tonight. Jacques, despite missing the last seven games, still leads the Oilers in hits with 53 which is 17 more than any other Oiler. The Oilers missed Jacques’ consistent physical presence much more than his two goals and three assists.
  • You should see lots of offence tonight. The Oilers are averaging 3.35 goals at home, compared to scoring only 2.27 on the road.
  • You won’t have to listen to Cotton Eyed Joe.

If Jacques plays here are the lines you could see:

Penner — Horcoff — Hemsky
Cogliano — O’Sullivan — Brule
Jacques — Gagner — Stortini
Moreau — Potulny — Reddox

These aren’t written in stone, and Pat Quinn isn’t afraid to juggle his lines during the games, based on who is going.

Live hockey: now in colour

If you want to go to the game e-mail me (<-- click!) and I'll pick a random winner to watch the Hawks and Oilers. You can only enter once (duplicate entries will be ignored). Entries MUST be submitted by 5:59pm. Include your phone number in your message. You'll be directed to pick up your tickets at Will Call. Good luck!

I knew it was game day, b*tches!

Edit: I may be willing to fly to Edmonton to catch this game. Don't let my 'hometown' fool you.

Edit 2: Prior edit is actually a huge lie. I have tickets to the Manitoba Moose game tonight.

I have a feeling the Oilers will win this game tonight. Something also tells me they are going to set a tone right from the first face-off, and that effort could turn into their biggest win of the season so far.

Don't ask me why, I just have that feeling.

Going to be a tough game tonight. Hopefully the Oilers come focused, start strong and bring it all game long.

Oilers: 3 - Hemsky, Souray, O'Sullivan

Hawks: 2 - Versteeg, Sharp

Hmmm... Who are the Hamilton Bulldogs affiliated with?

The Montreal Canadians, apparently.

That should be interesting. Any prospects I should be looking for?

Hey. The Game Day Blog us up. Whee:

Final Score: 8-3 Oilers. Hemsky gets 4 (he's been reading the posts of the last 24 hours), Penner with 2, Souray and Vis with 1 each.

Obvious Prediction: With Chicago leading 3-0 in the first, Ben Eager runs someone head-first into the boards and gets a game misconduct. Souray then stands in front of Chicago's bench and silently intimidates them. Chicago decides to let Edmonton win.

Not So Obvious Prediction: Patrick Kane is caught on camera checking all the payphones for spare change while heading onto the ice.

Apparently there's some black kid who had a pretty good tournament around Christmas last year.

@jeanshorts

P.K. Subban?

EDIT: Another Bulldog to keep an eye on at the game would probably be Yannick Weber. I've heard him being referred to as a younger version of Mark Streit.

This would be a shweet game to win tickets to. Was at the Colorado game on Wed. Sat in the nosebleeds behind Gregor, Chase, Nielson et al. Also in our section, I presume the Sherwood Park Crusaders, as Chase and some of the Cru gave shout outs back and forth. Next up, the Sharks on Friday, row 3 from the gf... unless I can magically pull off a win and take her to the Hawks game tonite (she`s an Oil fan, Khabibulin jersey and all).

Just got an e-mail from the Oilers (weird?) stating Khabibulin is out, JDD is in and the Oilers signed Torrie Jung (Edmonton WHL) to an emergency contract to play backup tonight.

Oh boy... hopefully Khabi doesn't go down for an extended amount of time. This could get ugly.

It's on the Oiler's website. I actually don't mind JDD starting again. Hopefully he'll be better early than he was against Colorado. He'll have to be or we're in deep. Hope Khalibulin's back is nothing serious although Tambo going out and signing this young guy scares me....

Isn't this one of those "emergency - one game" signings? I'd think a player would have to have a contract to play in the NHL.

@Chaz

It's just and Amateur Tryout Contract. It's alot easier to get a goalie in town to play. They did it with Sorochan once didn't they? When he was with the Golden Bears...

~With their record, you can't blame them for being gunshy about people actually watching them. Hopefully, they get another win tonight, set the jitters on their way, and sign a TV deal again.~

Oh, and for heavens sake don't mention the words "Hockey Night in Canada' to the Jung kid. He'd soil himself right there on the bench, and that's nothing people want to see. Well, except Jeanshorts maybe . . .

If you watch the hawks play, there is so much puck support, two players always converge to the puck carrier. Why can't the Oilers play that way? Maybe they are still scared of MacT? Or the scorth of Homer?
