GDB XXVII: Seriously? On the road again?

Coming on the heels of the announcement that Ales Hemsky's season was over, the Oilers put up a great effort against San Jose last night. It wasn't the result I was hoping for, but in the words of Willis, "It could have been much worse."
So tonight we get into with the Canucks. We're down a Czech and they're up a Swede. Last week, Daniel Sedin re-joined the Canucks bench after missing 18 games because of a broken foot. Meanwhile, our team plays missing eight guys (a stat from TSN.ca says we've lost 154 man games 155 man games to injury. Not boy games, people. MAN games) and the rest of the team has been playing with scurvy. At least, that's what I've been telling everyone who asks me why the Oilers aren't so hot right now.
The Oilers have only won three of their last 10 games, and this is our first road game on a six-game stretch. It's going to be key for the Oilers to, you know, go out there and TRY to win. No stupid mistakes, no own-zone flubs, nothing but perfect passes and scoring.
Easy, right?
Villainous Vancouver
The Canucks have won six of their last ten games. The Sedin sisters are back together, and have demanded that Canucks management install an Easy-Bake Oven in the locker room. Management has acquiesced to their demands.
And while the Canucks have two more wins on the season than us, they have guys hurting two. Granted it's only about half as many. Shit, I'm depressing myself.
There's something to be said for being mad as hell, though. And I know fans are. I can only imagine that the players are too — this isn't the OIlers' dream season some kool-aid drinkers had hoped it would be. If they aren't pissed their missing Hemsky for the season, then they should be.
I got the impression from Strudwick's interview last night that he didn't want Hemsky's injury to prove naysayers right: that the Oilers are screwed without the star player.
It's step-up time, boys. And we have a lot of steps to get where we need to be.
3-1 for the good guys tonight.
Go Oilers!
Dont remind me Hughson
Man there isn't enough money and loose women with big boobs in the world to get me play goal for the Oilers tonight. If we aren't setting the Canucks up directly, we tipping the puck so it goes directly to their player all alone in the slot, or screening the goalie, or vanishing to allow a free shot on goal.
Then, there is the pressure of trying to stop every shot for a goaless tie since we don't shot the puck.
Good to see JDD slug that Van Player crowding him, to bad it was a penalty and to bad the defence couldn't play likt that.
I have decided Khabi doesn't have a sore back, he's in secret treatment for shell shock.
When JDD was given the mercy pull, what were the shots, 15 to one. What impresses me was he actually managed to stop 11 uncontested shots from Van. After the game, every Oiler but the goalies should be giving half tonights pay to the goalies as a fine for abandoning them the whole game.
little known fact:
in 1oz of Crown Royal, there is 69 calories.
coincidence?
@cableguy - 2nd Tier Fan
No wonder I love Crown Royal so much. I thought it was cause of the sweet purple bags!
*do they still come in purple bags? I used to keep my marbles in one of those when I was but a
COLIN MCDONALD WITH HIS FIRST!! WHAT A SHOT!!!!!
PLAYOFFS BABY, PLAYOFFS!!
I think Souray make Luongo scared to make glove saves!
The only trades Tambo will be offered are two slug AHL players and a 12th round draft choice for Souray, or Vish, or Brule, or Gagner, or maybe Smid because they think he is in a bind.
Anybody thinks we can get a player who can actually skate or puckhandle, to say nothing of shoot, in a trade at the moment, is drinking the cool-ade bigtime.
Edit: Yes I know there are only 10 rounds.
WWWWHHHHOOOOO!!!!
Thanks for showing up Oilers. Better late than never I guess.
It's the Columbus game all over again!
My drink of choice: Crown and seven. It goes down ridiculously smooth. Problem of course is that you can drink 'em like pop, which makes for alot of really drunk nights.
Wait!!!!!
Penner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
f-ing oilers, now i have to watch the rest of this sh*t show.
***bookmarks nutritional info of crown royal page for the next oilers game***
I think I hear that lone ranger music, the comeback!!!!
This Penner/Brule/Gagner line is SMOKIN"!
@David S
It tastes like candy. It's amazing. Which is why I only get it every once and a while. Because otherwise I'd be a raging drunk the likes we haven't seen since Wanye Gretz cira the 2006 cup run.
5-1 lead, worst lead in hockey!
Keep the pressure up boys. Even if they lose, if they keep playing like this for the rest of the game it will be a lot easier to take. Although that first period was inexcusable.
Sam Gagner looks like he's really stepping it up.
MacD!
I'll be putting down some delicious Crown and Seven later tonight.
MMMMMmmmm...Candy!
Well, that was a brutal shift.
Dubnyk is looking solid though.
As strange as it might seem, maybe Dubnyk is the better goalie for this type of game. He's used to having AHL'ers in front of him and getting shelled on a nightly basis. So he should feel right at home.
see! all we needed was a set-up man for Penner in the shootout and he woulda been money.
I said earlier that Sam would step it up against Vancouver. He always seems to for some reason. No issue with papa there. LOL
The more I see, maybe Dubnyk is the better goalie period.
Ahhh...maybe I better just shut up.
Hey, anyone remember when penalties were called for actual infractions? And not just because a player fell to the ice, or because a stick was on, or around the guy with the puck?
the kid looks a little like Andy Moog
@jeanshorts
Looks like all the guys who post as a full-time job here have taken the night off. Good for them to get out once in a while.
bababahahaha....thats funny Harlie....the whole game I've been wondering who he reminds me of and your right on the money...a little Andy Moog...I love it!!! (Shed a tear when I realised that is the best part of this game)
@David S
This thread could definitely use a little Craig Wark or Deepoil. I know they'd have something constructive to say.
I'm liking Cogliano's crust lately, he's been feisty and reminds me more and more of Todd Marchant. Maybe that's why Quinn keeps playing him with Moreau.
@Dan the Man
Yeah, it's good to see, isn't it? As odd as it may sound, he looks to be feeding on Brule's style of play.
That's a really good point, maybe by seeing a guy who is pretty much the same size as him having some success and not shying away from the physical play has inspired him a bit.
Well I turned it off, read a couple posts about getting in the game, then turned it on just in time to see Vancouver get another high goal.
Noticed another thing, its easier to shoot high and accurately when you have time go set up your shot.
Also noticed to much coasting to get the loose puck thus losing the battles to skaters.
I don't care it stays off.
Maybe a silly question, but why are we wearing our home jersies on an away game?
@Skadden
because we have such a good home record? wait we are the Oilers, it's probably so that can be the one thing that makes us look good
after watching the esks play the worst defence i can remember in my lifetime, i am now seeing it on the Oilers. The team defence is awful, the penalty killing worse, and the goaltending even worse than that.
Why is it when the Oilers have a power play it is impossible for Souray or Vish to get a good shot through because all the lanes are blocked and there is instant pressure on the pointman? But when the nucks have a pp their pointmen have 15 seconds and 20 feet between them and the closest oiler? No pressure, no lanes blocked, just a bunch of boys against men on the pk for the oilers.
Oh, one more thing. A few years ago big goalies were all the rage because playing the butterfly they covered a lot of net down low and most NHLer's couldn't or didn't, shoot high accurately.
Now big butterfly goalies are everywhere, and most direct shot goals, not tips, are on high shots. Must have been a dozen of those tonight in other games.
Then that are all those crossing deaks thought the legs were bigness isn't any advantage at all. Alas, we have big goalies and players who can't shoot high accurately. No doubt, the next generation of successful goaltenders will be standup goalies who are better up high.
Seems to me there is a rule about away teams using their dark uniforms in the other teams building once a year, or maybe the home team actually has choice of uniforms, I can't remember which.
Good vigorous practice for the Canucks anyways.
for all the sadness we realized the season is over in game 25 when Hemsky is out for the season, this team's problem is not scoring goals it is stopping them. No matter how healthy our team might be, the team D would be no better with all our players better, although having a real NHL goalie would help.
More than a big time goal scorer this team needs help from veteran penalty killers both at forward and on defence. Players like that were easily available this summer and not getting one is an embarassment to Tambo.
I wonder if there are lingering effects from their concussions affecting Staios and Souray. Both seem to be out of position and half a step late on all the goals...
4 years in a row out of the playoffs. How does Kevin Lowe keep his job?
Hmmm, thanks I guess.
Clearly the issue here is that our goalies aren't tall enough.
@Dan the Man
so what you are saying is that we need to stand JDD and DD on top of each other? that's like 14 feet of goalie.... hmmm.....
Its not Lowe's job any more. It's Tambellini's. And he just got a free pass when Hemsky went out.
You know we were wrong in how we interpreted Tambo's remarks about needing to see the whole team to see what he's got, but all the players in the system. Couple more injuries and every player in the system will have playing experience in the NHL. After this year, there are no excuses.
PS Looks like some of the players from the minors look to be players.
I think they may be able to cover the top of the net then...
How long til the start of next season?
@Dan the Man
55 games....
@Brandon
can they play at the same time ??? that might help
Yea, but it is too bad we have to waste a whole year, I don't think I will be buying season tickets again next year I'm not getting my bang for buck.
Remember back in October when we were 6-2-1?
That was awesome.
Well here we go...we are in the draft lottery! The only balls I see the Oiler team or organization having are lots and lots of lottery balls.
Is Tom Gilbert the first eunuch to be drafted out of U.S. college hockey into the NHL?
I'm just searching for some sort of accomplishment to cling to this year.
did HNIC just cutoff Quinn? Lame...
Horc 18+ min today? Really? where was he? Oh, 0 shots on net, that explains it.
rOILER-coaster here we go again.
@Librarian Mike
Those were the days, the Kool-Aid tasted better, women looked at you with those sexy eyes when you wore that Hemsky jersey....so refreshing....
