GDB XVII: Lazy Sunday

You guessed it, Nationeers. It's lazy Sunday. That means today, I'm not even thinking about hockey. But who can blame me? The last seven games have been a difficult pill to swallow — with a record of 4-6-0 in the last ten— and although many people warned me, including several Nation writers, I still wasn't prepared for the thoroughly average to below-average play displayed by this team so far this season. Because I'm an overly optimistic team booster with an ecstasy problem.

We've logged a total of 16 games. Inspiration and grit seemed to be the name of the game when the season launched. Penner showed us he was more than an over-paid garburator, Comrie pulled a heck of a comeback to a city that once loathed him, and even Khabibulin literally pulled out all the stops.

And then the Oilers of yore showed up. The kind that can't stick passes, can't put the puck on net, and rely on an old sack of bones of a goalie to pull them through the worst of times.

Don't get me wrong, there's a tinge of hope settled into the back of my mind. That somehow Pat Quinn and Tom Renney will find a way to horsewhip this crew of layabouts into a winning hockey team, especially against a team our own Jonathan Willis has said shouldn't be this good.

I'm not overly optimistic about tonight, though — I still expect the Oil will lose on this lazy Sunday, just because that seems to be the name of the game these days — but I'd also settle for a 2-1 win. In regulation.

I need a drink. And more ecstasy.

More like AWESOME that you know that!

I think we would all take some stache advice from Big Sexy.

Cogs is also the guy that wouldn't shave his head last year when Hemsky and Moreau did it. Doesn't like the look? Jesus man, you're a 21 year old guy playing for the friggin Oilers. if you are worried about picking up chicks...

Exactly. I had an amazing perv stache when I rolled back into Alberta last Christmas. I was dating a chick in Vancouver and she took off to Europe like a week before I left, so having no lady to bitch at me, and not overly concerned about getting any random holiday treats I finally grew a stache for the first time and it was so much fun. It was so ugly and it was a pretty sweet conversation piece.

I grew one too... Every time I'd talk to people I would kind of cover my mouth like I was yawning or rubbing my mouth or some other way to hide it a little. How anyone can walk around with one of those things all the time is beyond me.

I would rather know about

WHAT THE HELL WHY DO THEY KEEP PLAYING THIS SAME CRAPPY SONG BEFORE EVERY POWERPLAY? No wonder no one is showing up to the games. OH MAN STRUDWICK! Amazing.

But, uhh, what was I saying? Oh yeah, I'd rather hear anything about Sheldon Souray, especially talking about mustaches, then whatever lame tidbit Gene shares with us between whistles about the way Gilbert Brule folds his socks at home.

Well Cogliano is Italian man, which basically makes him a hairy woman. Up keep is high on the priorities list. With a similar mustache story, I grew one before I left to hike the west coast trail so that I could have a bunch of photos with the stache. You know like when you see pictures of your parents back in the day when they were camping with a ford bronco, wearing a bandana and sporting some short short adidas? Yeah, thats the legacy I want to leave for my kids too.

I call BS, Cogs. We could make the Stanley Cup final and play halfway into July and Andrew wouldn't be able to grow a stache. Then again, that hasn't stopped Brule or Stone, so, agreed, WEAK.

@Shaun Doe

hahaha. I had my stache when I went to renew my license and my passport. So both of those have amazing pictures, that look like they should be posted on some kind of "Sexual Predators In Your Neighborhood" list. I think passing on the value of a mustache to our offspring will be the greatest gift we can give humanity.

I was just wondering that. I thought he looked good last year too. I think Brownlee said something about not liking him and that set off some kind of firestorm.

So if Potulny keeps playing like this and Stone comes back can we please get rid of Moreau?

Now I am no doctor but I feel that nature dictates if you use your arms too often they are bound to fall off right? RIGHT? That must be why they are allowing so many shots on net.

Yeah, it was mostly a reactionary comment to the goal. And obviously it is just one game, but since you're floating around (Gregor), what is the extended scouting report on Potulny? Other than the pile of AHL goals last year, do you know if he played a decent two way game down in Springfield?

Well it's nice to know they can still execute the flawless, never fails, cross ice pass for a one timer power play strategy without Hemsky.

I am a little worried though. The powerplay is firing on all cylinders tonight, so the Oiler fan in me is starting to wonder if that means they've used up all their powerplay goals for the next 4 or 5 games.

In case you are wondering the Oilers' record for most PP goals in a game is 5. They have done that five times. Last time they did that was Nov 19, 1988...

He is an okay two-way player. Not overly physical, but he has good hands, and is a good PP player. I'd say he is better defensively than Nilsson at this point, but doesn't skate as well. His two-way contract will hurt him a bit.

Based on numbers, the only way he sticks is if they elect to send down a Nilsson or a MacIntyre once Jacques and Hemsky are healthy.

Hey Gregor or Brownlee,

Next time you see him, can you tell Principe that Craig Anderson's performance is not a surprise as he suggested at the beginning of the game? I mean, c'mon, it's borderline misinformation. Anderson was just waiting to break out, and a lot of people thought we should have gone after him.

Maybe you could ask him to do his homework, so that next game he can do a story about how we could be getting a .930 save % for a million bucks instead of a .900 one for 4 million?

How so? You keep picking the Oilers 82 times a season no matter what and I'll pick based on how the games stack up and we'll compare records, OK?
