GDB XVII: Lazy Sunday

bingofuel
November 08 2009 04:52PM

You guessed it, Nationeers. It's lazy Sunday. That means today, I'm not even thinking about hockey. But who can blame me? The last seven games have been a difficult pill to swallow — with a record of 4-6-0 in the last ten— and although many people warned me, including several Nation writers, I still wasn't prepared for the thoroughly average to below-average play displayed by this team so far this season. Because I'm an overly optimistic team booster with an ecstasy problem.

We've logged a total of 16 games. Inspiration and grit seemed to be the name of the game when the season launched. Penner showed us he was more than an over-paid garburator, Comrie pulled a heck of a comeback to a city that once loathed him, and even Khabibulin literally pulled out all the stops.

And then the Oilers of yore showed up. The kind that can't stick passes, can't put the puck on net, and rely on an old sack of bones of a goalie to pull them through the worst of times.

Don't get me wrong, there's a tinge of hope settled into the back of my mind. That somehow Pat Quinn and Tom Renney will find a way to horsewhip this crew of layabouts into a winning hockey team, especially against a team our own Jonathan Willis has said shouldn't be this good.

I'm not overly optimistic about tonight, though — I still expect the Oil will lose on this lazy Sunday, just because that seems to be the name of the game these days — but I'd also settle for a 2-1 win. In regulation.

I need a drink. And more ecstasy.

I don't know if that's sweet they have a shrine to Sakic in their dressing room, or really, really stupid. I bet it's terrible to be the guy stuck beside it.

It's stupid. He was a nice guy with a killer wrist shot that score a bunch of points. He was not a WAYNE GRETZKY. Only the Great one deserves a shrine.

Yeah it would smell like old hockey equipment man juice... although it would be Sakic man juice,,, which I am only guessing smells like fresh lumber and steak.

OH. MY. GOD! TOM GILBERT??????

I was just saying we need to start using more wristers from the point. I'm looking at you Patrick O'Sullivan. Seriously we need more greasy goals like the two we've scored tonight. Those fancy dancy, pussyfoot around with the puck plays clearly aren't working.

I wonder if after Sakic dies there ir a plan to enshrine him along with his gear. They can then add a set of speakers to the box that will play a series of motivational speeches with the push of a button. You know really hockey hall of fame the Sh!t out of the deal

Great period. Although I think we should be CAUTIOUSLY optimistic. Lest we forget what happened against Detroit? Still though, it's nice to see some god damn scoring for once. Especially on the powerplay.

I'll be the first to ask...is the PP better without Hemsky??? Kidding, but really nothing like a weak ass wrist shot and then a broken play (Visnovsky) that leads to another goal. This is why they play, because no one thought they would have a chance to win, never mind score three goals in a period and all on the PP.

@Jason Gregor

there might be something to the team having to be more diligent on the PP without Souray and Hemsky to bail them out every night. It is frustrating to watch the team give the puck to Hemmer every night and then wait for him to do something.

Honestly I wouldn't doubt it. Well I guess that is less likely recently than it was near the beginning of the season. It just seems like there is an awful lot of passing and circling back to the blueline when Hemsky is on the PP resulting in wasted time. But I'd hate to bag on him since he had turned his game up more of late.

If the receivers could catch the ball they might have had a freaking chance. Brutal. Although I picked them to cover the spread and won, so not all bad.

You know what the best part of growing a stache is? You forget you have it and every time you pass a mirror you freak yourself out. That and you completely kill all chances of getting a chick. When there is no chance to screw it up then you are way more confident and cool.

Cogliano isn't growing one because he doesn't like the look. Weak. Stortini is engaged so that is close to marriage. It is a choice no other reason really. Souray has been giving guys Moustache advice on how to make it look as good as possible. Lame that I know that.

I've had a moustache for a month and a half already because my department at work decided to grow them until we hit Beta for ME2, now the company as a whole has decided to participate in Movember. Although my upper lip has been warm, it has been a cold winter on the lady front.

You totally forget you have one until you're in a mall, catch a reflection, and realize the pervert that is staring at you is actually you.

@Travis Dakin

Exactly. I had an amazing perv stache when I rolled back into Alberta last Christmas. I was dating a chick in Vancouver and she took off to Europe like a week before I left, so having no lady to bitch at me, and not overly concerned about getting any random holiday treats I finally grew a stache for the first time and it was so much fun. It was so ugly and it was a pretty sweet conversation piece.
