Steve MacIntyre on Waivers

Jonathan Willis
November 09 2009 11:35AM

To the surprise of absolutely nobody, the Edmonton Oilers have put Steve MacIntyre on waivers.

MacIntyre, who bounced around the minors for years (as recently as 2006-07 he was playing for the Quad City Mallards of the United Hockey League) was claimed off waivers by the Oilers at the start of the 2008-09 season. Florida had signed him to provide a physical presence for their AHL team, but with so many small players on the roster the Oilers felt the need to add a so-called ‘nuclear deterrent’ to their team. MacIntyre got into 22 games (Craig MacTavish used him sparingly, and injury was a factor) but spent the entire season earning a big league paycheck and seemed to be genuinely well-liked by fans.

Unfortunately for MacIntyre, when the Oilers axed MacTavish and brought in Pat Quinn, they effectively ended his time with the team. In an interview with CBC’s The Hour this summer, Quinn was asked how he felt about sending a guy out to beat someone up. His answer:

I’ve never liked that. I’ve always said, in my mind, I’ll keep you on the bench if you learn how to play - I won’t keep you on the bench – but you’ll be a part of my team if you can learn how to play.

He’s stuck true to that, and with all due respect to MacIntyre (who has worked his way up the hockey food chain in the most difficult possible way), he doesn’t have the necessary ability to play a regular shift, and as a result Quinn has refused to use him. Bruce McCurdy detailed the extent of that a few days ago:

On four occasions that Pat Quinn has had no choice but to dress every healthy body on the roster, MacIntyre has played 2:44, 0:51, 1:19, and 1:24. Twelve shifts in all, for 6:18 of total ice time.

Bottom line: MacIntyre wasn’t being used, and with the team battling injuries and the flu, it made no sense to keep him on the roster. Also, possibly of interest to the Oilers – Buffalo’s Adam Mair is on waivers. Mair played briefly for Quinn in Toronto before being dealt to Los Angeles, but he’s come a long ways as a player since then. Might the Oilers be interested?

Oh. Ok, I must've misinterpreted that.

Speaking of turncoats (lol), remember when Steve Smith scored on Fuhr to help the Flames win... and then signed with the Flames years later... along with Fuhr? You remember that? That was awesome.

Ha! It's from the Ali G show...

He stands in front of the word 'RESPEK' and tells people that there is so little 'respek' left in the world that if you look up the word behind him in the dictionary, you'll find that it has been taken out entirely.

Word today that Curtis Glencross has been suspended three games for heresy. Even the NHL knows you shouldn't leave Edmonton to play for the Flames. In addition to the heresy charge, the league took a Saturday hit on Chris Drury into consideration.

Also Chorney left practice early today and Nilsson didn't practice, so where does that leave us?

The rumor of scouting the lightning did come from Spector, not Eklund, so it could be true (not the Miller part). I mean Eklund said New Jersey is looking at 'a center' on the Oil. I hear the Flames are looking at 'a player' from the NHL.

No one answered the Meszaros thoughts? Is he an upgrade on Gilbert or Grebeshkov or not?

Perhaps you haven't heard some of the talk on local radio (from Jason/Robin/Bob), but it sounds like O'Marra has transformed himself back into prospect from suspect. I noticed your lil dig at him yesterday and was going to mention it but got sidetracked by another comment (funny how that happens here). Tim Sestito... psssh... please.

I never said it was because of 50 contracts, they waived him because Quinn wouldn't play him. You can only have 23 guys on the roster is what I meant, and putting Horcoff on the IR doesn't help, because his $5.5 cap hit still would count against the cap. He would have to go on LTIR and since he could play this weekend that wouldn't have made sense to lose him for 24 days.

That wasn't really directed at you.

All I meant is there are people that have said they can't pick up a guy (whether waivers or trade) because they have too many contracts. If you can improve you 13th forward, you've improved your team - bottom line.

For example, (your previous commenting notwithstanding RE: Mair), the Oil probably wouldn't have picked up Mair before MacIntyre was claimed, but now they may consider that type of move (I know you said they had no interest in Mair and he has subsequently cleared waivers, but its an example).

All I meant is the whole "we can't pick anyone up because of contract #'s" argument is thrown out the window with S-mac leaving. Or... it has free'd up another contract spot.

And I never questioned why they waived MacIntyre. Obviously, if Quinn doesn't want to play him, there is no sense keeping him around. I'm sure O'Marra will play more than that minute and a half MacIntyre played.

If a player is claimed from waivers then they have to keep him on the roster, I think. If they do then the Oil can claim him back. Although I'm not sure if he would have to stay on the Oilers roster at that point.

I think that was addressed the other day - the 'stay on the roster' rule only applies on re-call waivers, no?

I might not have been paying attention, but that's what I gathered from the discussion the other day.

@ freeze & Oil Kings 'n' Pretty Things

The Panthers would have to put him back on waivers to be able to send him down to the farm. The Oilers would then have first crack at him. If they said no, then the rest of the league would have their crack at him.

And I didn't take offence to the comment about contracts. But waiving MacIntyre only to bring in another contract wouldn't really help them, unless the player was better than what they have. And Mair isn't, so they had zero interest in him.

Again, this wasn't really directed at you in particular. You're not a fan, right Jason ;-)

I just find it funny how he has "changed" since becoming a Flame... ~cuz he certainly wasn't that way when he was an Oiler~

In any case, its possible that he's more comfortable as an NHLer now than when he played here, thus making him more confident being a yapper. Plus he's putting up more points as a Flame than he did as an Oiler (likely for that very same reason - more confidence as an NHLer). I don't think its unreasonable to think that the more games you get under your belt, the more cocky you become.

And who says this - the Oilers players? Big whoop.

And yes, a time may come where he has to answer the bell. He had 2 fights in half a season as an Oiler, and 2 fights (and way more points) in a full season in Calgary. The way people talk, you'd think he had a dozen fights in eTown and zero as a Flame. I just wonder if Vancouver fans (or any other team for that matter) see Glencross the same way SOME Oiler fans see him.

The SOUR GRAPES may not apply to you, but it certainly does with some here. Tough titty.

I don't think there is a point (unless you mean recallable waivers, in which case I'm not certain; GREGOR?).

For example, does Randy Jones HAVE to stay with LA, or could they trade him (at half price). I'd think he probably has to stay, but not sure.

As for MacIntyre, he doesn't HAVE to stay on the Panthers roster... they'd just have to waive him to send him down. If no one claimed him, he'd be headed for Rochester (IIRC).

You're probably right on Mair (although I may have taken a chance on him). With guys like Stone & Jacques out, Mair could've supplied some sandpaper. They could've ditched him 2 weeks down the road if they wanted (what's the harm?). Mair has played 484 NHL games, are you sure that Stone is better? Just a question (I'm not sure either way).

Here's what Garth @ HockeyBuzz (who?) had to say about him...

Mair is a proud guy, and he's tough as nails. His teammates appreciate his warrior spirit and his true grit. Frankly, I'll be surprised if he lasts on the waiver wire. I spoke with a friend in Toronto this afternoon when I heard the news of the move and my guy told me taht he thought that Brian Burke would be intersting in making a waiver claim on Mair. Is Mair: Pugnacious? Check. Truculent? Check. Aggressive? Check. Pugiilistic? Check. Passes Burkie's test with flying colours.

But I guess no one took that chance on him, so you must be right J-Greg.
