GDB XXXVIII: A new beginning in the same old year

After a brief two-day respite from Oilers' hockey, the team of apparent have-nots are left-coast bound today as they take on the Vancouver Canucks at GM Place. And I'm not going to lie to you, Nationeers, things haven't been so rosy at OilersNation lately.

Let's recap, shall we: after going 5-0 on the road, the Oilers then went 0-5 — with four of those games taking place at RX1 — completely nullifying fan excitement and causing some people to renounce their season-ticket status. About the only bright light over the last five games was the fact that Oil fans got to see Alexander Ovechkin live; as you'll recall, his Capitals squad mopped the bloody ice with the hapless Oilers.

Now it might not be the New Year yet, but after a two-day pause now is the time for the Oilers to resolve to begin demolishing teams. The Canucks are 6-4-0 in their last 10, which isn't that much better than the Oilers when you think about it. Oh sure, they have a much better season record than the Oil (21-16-0 vs 15-18-04), but in the immortal words of the Black Eyed Peas, tonight's gonna be a real good night.

And if it's not, I'll eat this new sweater Santa brought me.

The Sounds of Silence

Meanwhile, OilersNation is a ghost town. Gregor's off to Costa Rica, Wanye's still exploring the planet, Willis is welding random pieces of metal together in Fort St John, I'm stuck in Calgary, and Brownlee Claus is beating the shit out of all the bad kids with giant coal-filled red sacks.

Yep, it's been a quiet Christmas here on the internets.

Here's hoping the deafening silence is enough to get this squad of n'er-do-wells to actually, you know, play a proper hockey game. Because the moment this cluster of insufferably poor players repeats what they've done for the last five games, I have World Juniors and the Spengler Cup to watch.

It'll be close, but I'm going with Oilers 2-1 in OT.

So how many of you are going to be skipping Oilers hockey in favour of other hockey? Or in favour of something completely unrelated to hockey?

And how were your Christmases? Did everyone get as much socks and underwear as I did?

Bingofuel is the handsome cyborg who pulls all the levers behind the curtains of the OilersNation. When he isn't running the site, he's plugged into a wall socket, recharging. Or Brownlee and Wanye are playing "keep away" with him. He gets little to no respect.

Eeeeehh I wouldn't be that sure Wanye, the Canucks can play boring hockey with the best of them when they want to. I think we could be in for a snooze fest third, well unless we go shorthanded a couple more times.

Nonesense Shaun. The only thing worse than a snooze fest is no hockey at all, which is what I have been subjected to of late.

Oh and yes I'm watching atdhe.net from overseas. That's the only move over here and I'm not sorry.

Wow there Brownlee, ease up a bit there. Thats what I was trying to say. Rypien is one of the best fighters in the league pound for pound. What I was trying to say is he chucks punches hard and often. He's one of the most aggressive knuckle swingers I have seen in the league these days. Hence the its best to keep your face covered as often as possible comment.

If it makes you guys feel any better. I requested the rest of the PPV season back from my service provider. And believe it or not they gladly returned the balance! That makes me wonder if enough people cancel that they will admit the team is doomed for this season. I also downgraded my TV package, I was even temped to cancel sports programming because I'm facing th reality that it sucks to be an Oiler fan...

Second that. Go buy something red and cheer for the Flames, they love the wagon jumpers.

To Another Topic: What possible lineup changes can we expect for next season? All internal of course because that's how Tambellini rolls. If MPS and Eberle make the team who's in and who's out?

PS This may have been covered in earlier posts, if so I apologize I only read this page.

Yes TonyT -

It's good to see another person still clinging to dignity. Let this not be confused for clinging to hope - that is a different ball of wax altogether.

Even in the midst of a soul crushing season, bandwagon jumping is still brutally lame. In the absence of a team you can cheer for, real fans still cheer for the jersey, the idea of an Oilers team that can compete and indeed win.

The Reagans of the world who come here looking for props because they rag on the oil can keep on trolling. Your ol' uncle Wanye is reporting for duty as the leader of the Troll Patrol.

Glad to see you back patrolling Wanye. There certainly are alot of fickle fans on here lately. One should not get too up or too down on the wins and losses. We have some good players and a "new" system, which is taking longer than everyone expected to sink in.

The league is quite tight now a days, except for a few elite teams at top. If the Oilers were to win 2 games more per month it would put us 8th in the league. In my opinion to get the 2 wins extra a month, better goaltending, ie. Habby, and a little more consistency is all it would take.

That is all.

Trolls are the little things that kids use to play with funky hair colours. This I am not. You are half way there Wayne with those dreadlocky things...

I have not jumped off of the bus or sold my collection of Oiler Jerseys, Rookie Cards, and signed and framed pictures of the my favorite 27 Oilers over the last 25 years or so. So kiss my A$$, if I decide to refund my season of depressing losses on PPV. Really it is stupidity. As a season ticket holder, I haven't sold the remainder of my seats so not all is lost. However I have marked key games to sell to friends and family for no profit.

So PPV returns make me spineless, what happens if I now drop the season tickets? First off, If I truly did hate the Oilers why would I have them? Hmmm, I guess I could be really spineless and just sell them to Die Hard Oiler fans that have never bothered to buy Season tickets because they are so die hard... YEp... Have another beer guys...

Tank for Taylor...

Can they all play in junior next year or is Eberle no longer elligable? How about the KHL that would fit well with the Oilers recent string of luck these days.

While I have to agree that his response was idiotic at best, I don't know why you have a problem with thinking its possible for all three to make the team next year.

Eberle looks pretty good right now.

There was some talk after the draft by many that would have to be considered above the level of "fan" that thought MPS could have been NHL ready this year, so next season is hardly impossible. I also don't think a guy who is 6'1 200 lbs at 18 qualifies as a smurf.

Finally, since his comments were in reference to winning the draft lottery, do you know that last forward taken number 1 overall not to play in the NHL in his first year? Eric Lindros....and it wasn't because he couldn't make the roster. Since I can't even really remember the last forward taken #1 to fail to make the NHL his first year (Sundin maybe?) you'd have to think that if the Oiler's drafted a guy like Hall at #1 he would have a pretty good shot at making the team. Hell, even Stefan and Daigle made their respective teams immediately after the draft.

Does this mean it is likely to happen this way, not necessarily, but if the Oilers ended up winning the draft lottery it would hardly be a longshot wither.

@TigerUnderGlass

Hmmm... a well thougfht out response. Figures, kingsbl... err TUG ;-)

I don't think its impossible. I just think its a tad unrealistic to think 3 raw rookies are gonna be added to an already fairly young group of forwards. My point was more so 'why do (some) people automatically assume that all 3 could be here'. The Gagner, Cogliano, etc year was chalk full of youngsters, and that team didn't fair too well. The Coyotes have been young with tons of rookies & youngsters the past couple seasons and been a poor team, yet this season they sent some of the young guys that played last year & the season before down to the minors this season to allow them to develop and replaced them with vets. IMO, it is UNREASONABLE to EXPECT the 3 of them (if they do indeed land a top pick) to ALL make the jump. Not impossible, just unreasonable to EXPECT.

Also, the 'smurf' comment was in regard to Eberle, not MPS. I said...

...can they really afford to add yet another 'smurf' without subtracting one? Eberle is here next year, taking Cogliano's spot as he gets traded sometime this season or in the off-season.

... refering to Eberle as the 'smurf' (as in - in order to add another small, skilled player [Eberle], they'd have to subtract a current small, skilled player [Cogliano]).

In any case, for him to suggest they'd look good playing together next season, and then basically call me an idiot because 'he didn't say it would be with the Oil' WAS "idiotic at best". Its the ONLY REASONABLE place to assume they could play together next season.

Figures, kingsbl... err TUG ;-)

I did announce the change didn't I? I suddenly don't remember, but I meant to if I didn't. I wasn't trying to be different people if it turns out I forgot.

Is there room for both Eberle & Svensson? Eberle & Cogliano? And the 'new' kid? My thoughts... can they really afford to add yet another 'smurf' without subtracting one? Eberle is here next year, taking Cogliano's spot as he gets traded sometime this season or in the off-season. MPS plays next year in Sweden or Springfield

This made it sound like they were all smurfs and Eberle was getting the spot left open when Cogliano leaves meaning no room for MPS.

In any case, for him to suggest they'd look good playing together next season, and then basically call me an idiot because 'he didn't say it would be with the Oil' WAS "idiotic at best". Its the ONLY REASONABLE place to assume they could play together next season.

I continue to agree. I only mention this because it sounds slightly like you think I disagree, but I'm sure you don't and were just reiterating. As I said...idiotic was almost a compliment.

Take it easy Wayne,

I feel like maybe your troll comment is a little over the top, although I haven't read all of the posts here. Maybe a little rye involved here? Trust me Wayne, paying sixteen bucks a pop to see the Oil stink up the joint is hardly a measure of how good of a fan you are, only how much of a sucker you are.

In regards to the "best game game I've seen in weeks" comment, too funny. IF you had been around to witness the epic fail that was that home stint you maybe echoing Regan's comments.

To be perfecectly clear, LONG LIVE THE DIVE FOR FIVE.

You DID announce the name change. I was just being silly.

I didn't intend to make it sound like I thought MPS was a 'smurf'.

And I was just reiterating your compliment.

All in all, I think we're more or less on the same page. I just think people shouldn't set the bar so high and expect 3 rookies in the lineup next year... not that it isn't possible.
