GDB XXXI: Striking the Lightning

Jason Gregor
December 09 2009 11:56AM

Tonight the Oilers will try to do something they haven’t done since November of 1988; win four straight games on the road in the same trip. That year they beat Pittsburgh 7-3 on Nov 8th, won 3-2 in OT the next night in New Jersey, crushed Toronto 6-2 on Nov 12th and then squeaked by Buffalo 5-4 in OT on the 13th.

So far the Oilers have won two games in a shootout, which is similar to the four consecutive road wins 21 years ago. In November of 2002 the Oilers won four straight road games, but they were mixed in between home games.

In their 30-year history, the Oilers have only had five seasons where they didn’t register at least one four-game winning streak. 1981 they had two three-game winning streaks, in 1994 they had won three straight three times, in the lockout season of 1995 they won three consecutive games twice, in 1996 they did it three times and the last time they didn’t register at least four straight wins was in 2000.

The Oilers have fared well at St. Pete Times Forum going 6-4-2. Ironically enough they lost the first two games they played there back in 1993, and they lost their last two trips into Tampa. Up until their loss in 2002 they went nine years without losing in Tampa.

Lightning strikes

Tonight the Bolts should be fired up. Rick Tocchet benched his top two lines in Washington two nights ago, and yesterday they had a spirited practice that involved lots of contact and some intense special teams play. Tocchet ripped his team’s effort in the loss to Washington, specifically his top guys, so expect Steven Stamkos, Ryan Malone, Vinny Lecavalier and Marty St. Louis to be amped up tonight.

Stamkos scored 17 goals in the first 24 games, but he hasn’t scored in his last five. After a slow start, Lecavalier has 14 points in his last 15 games, but he only has six goals on 102 shots. He has a woeful 5.8 SH%, while St. Louis is worse at 5.4% with five goals on 92 shots. Both players will eventually break out and the Oilers are hoping it isn’t tonight.

Striking Oil

Dustin Penner continues to produce, but no one is hotter than Lubomir Visnovsky. Visnovsky has eleven points in his last ten games, and he is on pace for his first 20-goal season. His seven goals have him tied for second amongst defenceman, but he has scored those on only 39 shots. Visnovsky has a great shot and he needs to start using it more.

For the second straight game the Oilers have the advantage on special teams, at least statistically. The Oilers are 11th on the PP and 23rd on the PK. The Lightning despite their top-end forwards are only 19th on the PP and their PK is brutal sitting 28th.

The Oilers should be able to cash in on the PP tonight because the Lighting has been shorthanded 125 times, 8th most in the NHL. The Oilers have only had to kill off 104 attempts, 7th fewest in the league. If the Oilers use their speed, the Lightning will take a lot of penalties.

Injury update

Fernando Pisani took a light skate on Monday and is feeling better. He is still at least a month away, but he’s shooting for a mid to late January return. This was the first time in three years that he has felt run down, so he doesn’t expect this to be a re-occurring problem.

Marc Pouliot has been skating for a few weeks and is about ten days away. You have to think that he will get a brief conditioning stint in Sprinfield before joining the Oilers. The Falcons play three straight next weekend, and I’ll bet if Pouliot is cleared he will suit up for all three from the 18th-20th.

The Pint

If you don’t want to watch the game on your computer the Pint has the TV feed and will be showing it tonight. They are at 10125 109th street and it is wing Wednesday as well.

@ HBMW:

Last I checked, he gets paid to be here.

That's a not insignificant argument in favour of the "Robin's not a loser" point-of-view.

On the other hand, "Dude, you're a loser for hanging out in this place where I hang out" is a not insignificant argument in favour of Robin's point-of-view.

So, if I've read all these posts correctly, SHAW has the Center Ice preview and tonight's game is available. Does anyone know what channel that'll be? It's not that I'm too lazy to check, it's that I have to call home and tell my wife to record it - too much of a hassle to get her to find out what channel that is... trust me.

Also, can we do something about the hangover college drunks trolling this board, please?

Why would you break up the other lines because they are playing well. Gagner needs to learn so let him learn, even though he'll take some lumps.

Anyone who expects Gagner to be dominant right away are kidding themselves.

@ HBMW:

I think it was the repeated insults - not just to specific members of the community here but to the community as a whole, that crossed the line.

For instance, Ogden Brother Jr. is pursuing much the same argument as you are, namely that Pisani a) was never that good of a player b) is unreliable due to injury/illness.

The difference of course is that he's writing clearly and while I disagree with his argument he's not demanding that Pisani give up hockey or insulting the "little minds" of the people around him.

me demanding he retire is just what i thought is best for the team. im sorry if my opinion is not the same as everyone elses, but that is no need to insult me.

if you look at my original post, it was not insulting towards anyone other then maybe pisanis hockey career.

Heavy duty action today! Don't feed the trolls people.

I hope they win but way too many guys in a slump find their way with the Oilers.

I'm still gulping the road trip koolaid (it has booze!) so I'll hand the game to the Oilers 5-4.

I wish you were reading it incorrectly, but sadly it does show today's game blacked out.

I called SHAW and so far as they know the game isn't available due to the blackout, despite the free preview of NHLCI. That said, the SHAW dude indicated that it would be worth checking anyway because "you never know...".

I'll hold off on the Toyota jump for now.

In defense to the guy with a 50 letter in his name, what's the big deal if he took a shot at Pisani's career? There isn't exactly that many Oilers who's careers don't get called out on a day to day basis. Maybe his first comments were a little out of line, but it appears that once people started calling him out they became stupider.

I'd be pissed too. Although I don't agree with his later comments his first couple weren't exactly that bad.

Going back to the start:

Why doesn[']t Fernando just do [u]s a favour and pack it in?

Probably because after dedicating his life to an NHL career, and then fighting through a nasty ailment, he doesn't want to give up something he's worked so hard for. Possibly because he's getting paid millions of dollars to play hockey. Possibly because he's a pending free agent and he'll have a perfect opportunity to see if someone else wants him. Possibly because he's not even 33.

It[']s over.

Not in the opinion of the coaching staff, who have inserted him into the lineup this season, and I'd bet good money not in the opinion of NHL GM's either, one of whom will all-bu-certainly give him a new contract this summer.

He wasn[']t much to begin with, so its not like he will develop much after the injuries.

He was "much" to begin with, so all he needs to do to be a useful player is get back to where he was. In his prime, Pisani was capable of playing a shutdown role against anyone and adding major value to the penalty kill. Plus, for a few short weeks he was the best goal-scorer in the biggest hockey stage in the world: the NHL playoffs.

Waste of cap space and obligation.

Pisani, in his current state, isn't worth the cap space being used on him but few Oilers are and since this team is going absolutely nowhere this season there's absolutely no harm in using some of the remaining games to see where Pisani's at. In fact, given that the Oilers could very much use a player like Pisani (in his prime) it makes great sense to play him and see if he's worth re-signing this summer.

It's funny how often these trolls are taking over threads lately. It's Oilers nation, where we read and argue about the OILERS. Ya, it's okay to call out a player or two, but use at least a little class, especially when you don't use your name. I'm Mike Milli Mills, and I will always back my team. I also agree that if Pisani is to get a new contract somewhere next season, it will be for cheap $$$. If, and a big IF, he can stay healthy, he is a 3rd liner, but, since he was diagnosed with Colitus, he sure hasn't looked like the player he was, and that is too bad.

thanks for showing them hows it done.

i just think with his ilness any contract giving to him will be considered a gamble. i dont know how many offers he would get and at what price.

i dont discredit anything he has done in that playoff run, but. it was for a 2 month period in a once in a lifetime chance. plus the whole team was on fire most of the time, so that fueled and helped him too.

as for resigning him. i dont see it happening. also, i am almost certain pisani is smart enough to know his health means more to him and he will walk away from the game of hockey. pressure and stress do not help his condition.

I look forward to seeing that too Bucknuck. Might as well give those kids the ice time they need to develop and learn. Far too much pressure on lots of them, and some of them get knocked more than others for being inconsistent. Gags isn't even old enough to order a damn beer in the US, I think it's a bit much to expect him, as well as some of our other kids (like Cogs) to be huge scorers right away. There was a recent article here that explained that a lot of scorers, even elite scorers took a few years to get there. Some of the expectations are unrealistic for some of these kids, and that's just not fair.

Isn't that what you're doing? You're saying he's not a great player, and that because of his disease he's a waste of cap space. You said as much here:

"Why doesnt Fernando just do as a favour and pack it in? Its over. He wasnt much to begin with, so its not like he will develop much after the injuries. Waste of cap space and obligation."

If you think you're not being a prick by saying he's a waste of obligation, then you're speaking a language I'm not familiar with.

I kinda agree with Hans. If Pisani cant play 20-30 games this year he should do the right thing and retire giving us our cap. Thank god this is his last year of his deal though. It isnt his fault, but hockey is a business. We could give him a scouting position or something. However, since it is his last year Im fine with him riding it out LTIR then we have most of the space anyway.
