GDB 56: Broken vs broken

broken

Assuming the Coyotes don't file for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in the next few hours, the Oilers will face Phoenix tonight in Glendale, Arizona. A team that is broken against a team that is just plain broke. On a Monday too. Squee (?)!

At the risk of jinxing a three-game winning streak, this match should be one where the Oil eek out a win. At the risk of jinxing the starting goalie, one would have to assume that JDD will play that role and that ol' man Roloson would get the start tomorrow against the Juggernaut that is Shark.

But in this crazy MacT-coached world anything is possible now, isn't it? Perhaps MacT will dip into his bag of tricks and start Strudwick in net, citing his versatility and work ethic as principle reasons for getting the start. Perhaps the Oil will forgo a tender altogether, favoring a six-man attack for a full three periods. We had a coach in Pee Wee that once pulled the goalie for the entire third period because of our lack of defensive play. THAT team had some heart, we can tell you that.

Whatever happens tonight this is another one of those games that won't earn the Oil critical acclaim if they win, but one where all kinds of holy hell will break loose if they lose. Kind of like last year when we fought that eight-year-old at the Waterpark. No one was cheering when we were raining thunderous kicks and punches upon our opponent early on, but we sure heard about it when we eventually lost.

That chick had crazy fighting skills though. Whatever.

FMNF

Oilers 4, Coyotes 2.

@ David S:

29 minor penalties (and counting) in 55 games this year for Moreau.

Penalties 200 feet from your net are so selfish....

Man, that's so awesome so see the boys so pumped up for each other. It only took over half the season, but it looks like the chemistry is finally all there.

Note to management: Don't bring in half a new team next season.

Man I hope we start JDD tomorrow, take our lumps and move on to the next winnable game. I'll be on the road listening to Oilers radio. It should make for a masochistic drive.

Once again Moreau plays like an absolute meathead. What a liability. I don't get it. People in Oil country suck this guys ass and he hurts the team running around making stupid plays game in and game out. Rip the effen C off his sweater and put it on Joe Moss.

Don't hold back, big guy; tell us how you really feel.

Seriously, are you quitting smoking or something? We just won. Take a moment to be happy; that winning stuff is rare air with this team, so enjoy the moments we have together. There will be plenty of losses yet this year (maybe as early as tonight) during which to rip on Moreau, the coaches, the mascot, and the chick that cuts Staios's kid's hair. In the meantime, let's cut everyone a little slack for a few hours, shall we?

@ Ender the Dragon:

While celebrating and enjoying a win is great (and well deserved), don't you think it is important to stay focused on the things that need to be addressed?

For example, just because we have won 3 games in a row does not mean that we should forget about addressing our definite NEED for an NHL calibre defenseman. Guys like Staios are not going to hold up playing the minutes they are. It is obvious that the coach has very little faith in Peckham and I would think Tambo needs to acquire someone immediately to fill the void.

As far as "yo" ripping on Moreau, I think he has every right to question the captain. Moreau's selfishness didn't cost us the 2 points this time; but something needs to be done about the lack of discipline from our leader. With the race as tight as it is and every point so important - we can not afford to be taking selfish penalties 200 feet away from our own end. The difference between making the playoff dance or not may very well rest on a PP goal that we didn't need to give up...

I am absolutely thrilled with the way the team played last night. I feel the team is pulling together to try and get the job done even in the face of key injuries. I have serious differences with the perceived god-like status given to Moreau by most fans and press. He plays like someone who is trying to make the hero move every shift. I think he fails to play with his linemates to create something out there. He doesn't seem to pass the puck very often. He is a fourth liner and should play within the limits of his role and skills. He skates hard in a straight line and usually hits and blocks shots. Other than that he has no hands or creativity. Several times last night he would approach the 'Yotes blue line and instead of firing the puck deep into the corner he would try and deak the winger or D-man. He coughed up the puck just about everytime as I recall. His BS performance would have got him benched if we had a coach who wasn't afraid of criticizing one of HIS boys.

On the second penalty he angled his skates to crash the net/goalie and was pushed at the end but that is not what caused him to hit the goalie. MacT went out of his way to make an excuse for him by blaming Gretz' influence on the on ice officials for that call.

How does Moreau pull some other player aside and run his mouth about someone else's performance when he plays like a moron? What kind of an example is that?

The 'C' could be put on any of about 5 other Oiler players who would acquit themselves admirably. There you go, THAT'S how I really feel!

I wasn't questioning Yo's reasoning, just his timing. It seems like there are not enough opportunities to really enjoy being an Oilers fan, and if being a fan brings you nothing but grief and despair, even when they win, then maybe it's time to ask youself if you should take up ant farming or coloring or something else less stressful instead.

I just think every member of the Oilers faithful should stop dwelling on the negatives and bask in happiness at least a few times each season, and if you can't do that a few hours after their third win in a row, well, . . . I just feel bad for you is all.

Note To Rollie:

That move you do when you bat the puck out of the air is cool and all, but please limit its occurance to once or twice a year. You played great last night, and have been very good lately, but put that move away already. Especially when you're surrounded by 3 opposition players. I know you actually didn't make the move last night, but you kept acting like you were going to, and quite frankly Rollie, it makes us all a little bit nervous here in Oil nation. We'd prefer it actually if you just concentrated on holding on to your stick (I bet that's what she said) as opposed to trying to emulate Barry Bonds.

Other than that one complaint, keep up the good work, even though I think JDD should get the start tonight. Have to put the Big Kid in at some point. May as well be the second half of a Back-to-back that we really don't expect to win.

Souray was a beast last night. Jovo is still wondering why he flew off the handle like he did. Love it!

So many games this year, the Oilers come out flat and with no emotion. I agree that some of the penalties Moreau takes are dumb, but I don't believe selfish. He's not taking penalties just to see himself on the jumbotron, it's an act of desperation and emotion that so few of the guys play with. We're you complaining when he sent Dutin Brown into next week on Saturday, we're you complianing when he scored a hat trick against the Coyotes in thier previous games against them. No, you see flaws in his game...sure, but he's one of the few guys out there, besides maybe Souray, that plays with any real edge and CAN contribute. He is on pace for one of his most productive years

That's just it. I think his timing was perfect. We are in a dogfight for our playoff lives and our captain takes one of the stupidest penalties immaginable. Not only were we already shorthanded, but Moreau's lazy (and obvious) hook was pointless and inexcusable.

We played a very good hockey game yesterday and we should be happy. The thing for me is - if your going to take positives out of losses - you also have to look for areas to improve on when you win. Every game is a learning experience regardless of the result. If you don't approach it that way - you are just being reactionary.

If Moreau's penalty was a one time deal - then we really have no need to disuss it. When it keeps happening time and time again, it get's frustrating for the fans and it should be addressed (regardless if we win or lose).

That's true, but there are some people on this site who I wouldn't expect to see posting positives after a loss. The people who do are probably the happier (or at least more objective) fans. I'll leave it to individuals to decide if they fall in that group, but if my memory serves on who regulary posts positives after a loss, it's usually a pretty short list. A much longer list includes people who look for the negatives after every game. That gets tiring for the reader, and has to be unfufilling for the writer.
