GDB 61: San Fernando es muy bueno!

creationofpisani

The Oilers will get a lift tonight when Fernando Pisani returns to the ice for the first time since Nov 17th, a span of 42 games. He will skate with Moreau and Cogliano, while Stortini returns to his usual spot on the fourth line with Reddox and Brodziak.

His teammates wasted no time trying to make him feel part of the team again.

Moreau said jokingly, “It's easier for him to come back compared to a skilled player.”

When Mark Connolly and I asked Pisani about that he replied, “He should know. Have you seen the puck after he handles it? It's chipped up badly,” laughed Pisani.

Pisani is well-liked in the room, and Moreau went on to say how much of a boost it should be for the team.

Pisani does play a simple game, and since he doesn’t play very physical his conditioning shouldn’t be an issue.

Grebeshkov will not play tonight, but thinks he might be able to go on Saturday.

The last time the Blue Jackets were in town, it was the Ales Hemsky show. He scored twice, had two assists and basically beat the Blue Jackets himself. Hemsky has been okay of late, but he needs to amp up his game again. The Blue Jackets have been a good match up for the Oilers offensively this year, and they sounded like a confident bunch at the skate today.

Of course that doesn’t guarantee a solid effort, but for unexplained reasons this team has been able to ramp their game up at this time of the year before, excluding 2007.

Spotlight on coaches

Ken Hitchcock goes for win #501 tonight. He became only the 12th coach to win 500 games when the Jackets beat the Leafs last Thursday.

Pat Burns is next in line with 501.

Here is the top ten.

  1. Scotty Bowman: 1244-574-323
  2. Al Arbour: 782-577-248
  3. Dick Irvin: 692-527-230
  4. Mike Keenan: 660-539-163
  5. Pat Quinn: 657-481-180
  6. Bryan Murray: 620-465-154
  7. Billy Reay: 542-385-175
  8. Ron Wilson: 539-452-158
  9. Jacques Lemaire: 528-405-172
  10. Jacques Martin: 517-406-175

Pretty exclusive company for Hitchcock, but the Oilers are hoping he waits to tie Burns for at least another two days.

But wait, there's more!

And what were the Penguins thinking? Why not just sign Ryan Malone to the $4.5 million contract in the summer. Is Chris Kunitz better? Of course not. Ray Shero must have something else up his sleeve or Ryan Whitney has completely lost his game. I’m betting on the former.

Lift from Pisani my ass.... this team played like the last thing they wanted was Pisani.

Moreau takes another stupid penalty to kill 2 mins of the remaining comeback time, what a joke of a captain he takes far too many lazy, selfish penalties to be captain.

Fiveandgame:

"What do you get when you cross heart with raw skill?"

"I don’t know either cause it’s been a long time since I’ve seen it on home ice."

You didn't notice Nash skating around on the ice tonight? Or for that matter, Iginla last weekend?

Every once and a while a player named Hemsky shows up in Oiler colours with these qualities, but it feels like it's been a while since he was here now.

Four forwards on the ice at the end - Ethan "Huh" Moreau, a guy who just missed half the season, Sam "sucks" Gagner, and Robert Nilsson.

Why does Craig MacTavish hate the Oilers?

You know the Mighty Ducks scene where they pass eggs back and forth? The Oilers need to do that. Nobody on this team could cleanly receive a pass in the 3rd period. Bobbled everything.

Boy we might get a good draft pick with this stellar play... If things keep going this well we might have a chance at Tavares!

W.T. suggests that sure was OILER HOCKEY tonight.

Are Katz and Lowe under a palm tree with no cell service? Come on leaders, stand up and speak to your loyal fans, say something?

No sense trying to trade for Kovy and Marty now after a great game like that. What the heck, no sense make any trades at all, Oilers can win with the team they have now. Stauffer, quit watching the Healthy Kitchen and post what you said about Smyth on the radio when he was traded.

R.B. and J.G., please post the answer Peca gave to you when you asked him who ran the team during the playoff run.

W.T. suggests this is a Rexall reminder to your loyal Oiler fans to take your Paxil. It is going to be a long long month for you.

Finally some people are questioning the spokesperson of Rexall Corp...... jaek Daniels and Boom Betty finally were allowed to question his silence at 6:55 this morning.... 1) Katz is a non disclosure person - that is his MO This leads to various cat calls and batman references...... maybe deserved. 2) He had to borrow $100mm to buy the team from CIT Group. Where did the other $100mm come from - himself or a loan from Rexall Corp.... This raises the personal commitment to the team vs corporate branding. 3) After the financial nine eleven this last September on the stock market, does Katz even have $100mm for the new building.... Putting it in trust would silence the doubters...... show us the money. 4) When the oilers opened at home - DK sent Barry Katz (the real Mr. Rexall) onto the ice with Nicholls to represent him - while he took a new citation for a test flight to Europe for a Yacht vacation - possibly in Spain. This raises some issues that the team is a corporate transaction for Rexall Corp rather than a personal investment interest. 5) If the Oilers continue to lose - is it possible that season ticket demand could drop to 12 000 - therefore a new barn is more of a luxury - noting it is the third oldest building in the league that has once been refurbished. 6) Based on a possible cash crunch - with the oilers possibly winning, would the oiler faithful be asked to buck up a pay for the rink and team via a personal seat license at $25K per lower seat and $250 - $350k per suite. 7) Problem on the team is the roster - which Lowe has provided MACT. Horcoff, Penner, Cole are all non performers. Greatest acid test for a contract signing is..... would another GM take this contract..... the answer is no on Horcoff and Penner. 8) Katz has made one public statement in August and has been in seclusion since then. Is it possible that Katz is not in charge and this team is being run by the stakeholders of Rexall from the United States much like MSG. Hockey people make hockey statements - that is why Lowe is paid to be the hockey mouthpiece and sign talent - allegedly. The question is whether Lowe is being true to his job - and no one questions this.

Have you ever noticed that Penner stakes out in front of the net and just stands there and watches like a deer in headlights - while Smytty with less pure talent had a heart of a stormtrooper and went into the net and challenged every shot to hit him, deflect off his helmet, stick, chin and take the beating that Penner refuses even to consider. Penner is very white collar, but even at a higher pay scale - Smyth is all construction - blue collar.

Sorry Warrior - only RB (your nemesis) can comment - Bob works for Rexall Sports - not Ched and can only comment on oilers.nhl.com which is moderated and controlled by Allan Watt. This is a rightsholders issue as discussed on Gregor's show - Watt believes that the own the content and that people should read this content on their website only. Katz is thinking about borrowing more money and buying the team 1260 so he can coontrol all negative comments from Gregor and B. The end is near - need I Rexall Remind you.

W.T. has to hit the road but one final comment: KLowe is true only to himself. If he was true to the Oiler Nation why do we have a team with a $40m+ salary cap and nothing to show for it. You can talk all you want about prospects, like all the goalies in the organization. Which one is the #1 for next year?

Would Atlanta take Horcoff, Cole and Smid for Kovy and Marty? Probably not, they will say that is not enough. What does that tell you about the great signings KLowe made?

Ice improved this year when the Northlands yahoo's were told to stop using city water and to deionize the h2o prior to setting up the rink - not too bright. I spoke to the consultant and he could not believe the backwards farm approach that Northlands was using causing problems for players and the quality of the ice.

Also, I noticed in Los Angeles and Glendale that they really, really clean the ice between whistles - the ice girls really take their job seriously and have male bucket boys cleaning most of the blueline in.... maybe Northlands should get off its high horse and employ an all male farm team if ice girls are offensive for the Rexall demo and make an extra effort to insure fast clean ice throughout the game - not just the first 5 minutes - their present ice maintenance between whistles is very low key in comaparison to the American rinks - not taken seriously.

Note to cambo - both teams have to play on the same surface - so we have a roster problem - shoot the puck, got to the net, get dirty, take the mountain - ooops sorry Smytty went to the other mountain in Colorado.

If we had a golf cart injury, snow blower accident or something we could call it the Rexall curse - but this is just bad performance for an overpayment - maybe Lowe could have another temper tantrum and yell at Burke that would fix everything.

Terrible effort in a must win game. I don't know what they can do to fix it - but it has to be fixxed. Trade or the coach has to go. Not just 1 or 2 people trade, an earth shattering team changing trade. When you send Pisani(who hasn't played in 3 months), Moreau (who just cost you 2 minutes of even strength), Reddox & Stortini out in the last 2 minutes down by a goal it sort of says something 'bout your top 6 players.

The only way you can have a stripper pole at Rexall is to call it a dance pole - and the strippers from Independent Artists are not strippers - their hosteses.

Funny story - I was at the Le Meridian in Los Angeles with Playboy Golf - it was lingerie night and all the models were coming back to the hotel around 1AM scantily clad - the bonus was there was a Bar Mitzvah going on and the 13 year old kids were blessed with these beaties in the front lobby - while the overly rich parents had hired las vegas comedian Carrot Top - for some reason the young boys were distracted for some time - what a way to celebrate manhood - give praise.

I guess it takes driving from Calgary to Edmonton to witness the worst game in the history of hockey to coax me out of lurker status.

Holy s*#t. What was that last night? Is it too much to ask that a mediocre hockey team at least show a little effort? I mean, it took effort for me to get to the game last night, the least they could do it put a little effort into the game.

The thing that pissed me off the most was listening to the post game comments of Moreau and MacT. Do either of these guys have a pulse? 'We can't get too down on ourselves at this time of the year'...'We will just come out and play better next game'. Give me an f'ing break, Ethan. How about telling it like it is to the press...and to your fans. Why can't you simply say that we layed an egg out there and that you are pissed and there is no excuse? I'm sure everyone in the nation would at least respect and answer like that rather than the crap you spewed.

MacT's comments were just as bad...they played bigger and stronger than us? How about they showed up and we didn't.

Do either of these guys have a pulse? ‘We can’t get too down on ourselves at this time of the year’…’We will just come out and play better next game’. Give me an f’ing break, Ethan. How about telling it like it is to the press…and to your fans. Why can’t you simply say that we layed an egg out there and that you are pissed and there is no excuse? I’m sure everyone in the nation would at least respect and answer like that rather than the crap you spewed. MacT’s comments were just as bad…they played bigger and stronger than us? How about they showed up and we didn’t. I want my money back.

Sorry underwear and pharmeceuticals are non refundable.... Oil crapped the bed and were on mirazepan to settle their nerves.....
