GDB 70: Against the Avs, Roloson's 26th straight start

Edmonton Oilers goaltender Dwayne Roloson starts his 26th straight game tonight against the Colorado Avalanche

Lucky number 26? If 13 is widely considered unlucky by many, I wonder if double the amount is twice as bad or if there’s no significance what so ever.

Either way, Dwayne Roloson will start his 26th straight game tonight against the Avs. An Oiler win tonight should get JDD his first start since November 30, tomorrow in Chicago.

Starting Roloson tonight makes the most sense. The Oilers need this game and technically speaking their odds of a win tonight are greater than tomorrow in Chicago. Every game is huge down the stretch, but Roloson can’t start every one, so put in your best goalie tonight, get the win and then hope that Deslauriers will be so pumped to play tomorrow in Chicago that he might steal you a game.

Roloson is 9th in GP amongst goalies, he has faced the 8th most shots, and only Lundqvist has a better save % out of the top nine work horses. Roloson has had a stellar season, when you consider no one thought he would be the bona fide number one this year.

The Avs on the other hand are in the basement of the Western conference and when you look at their goalie’s numbers it’s no surprise. Budaj has a 2.87 GAA and a .899%, while Raycroft is struggling with a 3.15 GAA and .892%. The injuries to Joe Sakic and Paul Stastny have definitely hurt them, but they don’t have good enough goaltending to compete.

On Saturday, the Oilers allowed the Avs to stay in the game when Hemsky was stoned on a breakaway, and then they didn’t muster a shot on two separate two-on-ones early in the first. The Avs are playing out the string. So much for the adage “playing loose” down the stretch, because the Avs have ONE regulation win in their last 12 games.

This has to be a win tonight for the Oilers.

Joe Sakic skated this morning for the first time since suffering a back injury on Nov 28th, and then getting outsmarted by his snow blower in December. It doesn’t sound like he’ll play tonight.

Mike Vernace and Derek Peltier made their NHL debuts on the backend for the Avs earlier this week, so the Avs blueline could be ripe for the picking if both suit up again tonight.

Penner took some shifts with Moreau and Cogliano while Pisani skated with Reddox/Stortini and Brodziak. Moreau and Cogliano worked well together earlier this season, so putting them back together makes sense and Penner seems more energized when skating alongside the Captain.

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON???????

Gagner with 5 points?????? I literally left for 10 minutes and I come back and it's 7-1. Unreal. It's a good day to be an Oilers fan. That is until next game. When we get smoked and then resume hating each other.

I really don't think Gagners timing could be any better. What is that, 70 points in his last 4 games? Jesus. I like it. He won't be getting juice for the rest of the season that's for damn sure.

Well duh. It's not like it's a smart move to keep together all these lines that work. It's still pretty early in the season. Now is the time to experiment with all sorts of crazy pairings.

Well it`s not like every line and the defense scored a goal or anything....

So it`s perfectly natural to mix it up.

That depends on whether you think the Oilers can catch the teams in front or if you think they`ll get caught from behind.

Kypreos was a talentless hack, he`s just upset because the closest he got to celebrating 50 was the number of games he played in the league.

...I was gonna go on here and point out the flaws in MacTavish's coaching inabilities but after the highest offensive output of the season I'll give him a freepass for the remainder of the evening. However, Brownlee had a good suggestion on 1260 this afternoon, suggesting that if the Oilers got a big enough lead we sit Roloson for a breather (albeit a short one) just to give JDD a look.

Anyways, I thought the Ovechkin celebration was classic. Sure it was more than any of us would do and it was pretty awkward but that's why we love Ovechkin, he just does what he does for his own fun. He's like Shaq with Yao Ming's vocabulary.

Actually everyone is wrong in this instance. Obviously this isn't the real deep oil, nor is it Jack Bauer or Master Dakin. The fake deep oil imitator du jour is the person who posts as the following people:

Clifford J. Boostrom The Don Scott C. Booschock Pokie Reddik Sandra Monias

That's a lot of fake names. Knock this shit off people or we are going to have to demand bone marrow samples from everyone to validate identities. You think I want to have to get up at 12:15 from a Hanna Montana DVD and moderate this type of crap?

And deepoil - do you REALLY think my name is Wayne after all this time? Come on dude.

Good job Rolli. The Oils was right to choose you as their goalie this year but failed miserably by having the 3 goalie system. It was clearly a lose-lose situation for all. It caused headaches for the goalies and the result was a lack of playing time and practice but as well, shorten the a bench spot for a nongoalie. It would have been better to keep Garon as a backup rather than the inexperienced Deslaurier esp when you are fighting to secure a playoff spot. Now Deslaurier doesn't play and Rolli will in tough to play like he is now during the palyoffs. What were the Oil thinking? Now Rolli at the age of 39 playing more consecutive game than any other oiler in history while trying to fight for a playoff spot. This may come back to bite them on the arse If they do not make the playoff or failed to play well during the playoffs all because of a tired goalie, an inexperienced backup and poor management.

@ David S:

My apologies Davy, you are right and I am wrong, but I really was under the impression that we go into every game to win. JDD needs work, why throw him to the wolves in Chicago and what does that say to the team when the coach doesn't think they have the horses to beat the worst team in the west unless you have Roli in net. We need all the points right now and if they continue to ride Roli, will there be anything left for the playoffs? We can beat Chicago with a fresh Roli between the pipes. How is it that people don't understand this? It is good to have different opinions isn't it...

Sorry it took so long to reply.
