fmnf

It took us 76 games, a hundred odd posts and a hojillion comments defending this team but it has finally happened. We have officially had enough of this shitanusly mediocre 2008-2009 Edmonton Oilers hockey squadron. Don't get us wrong. We sit firmly planted on the Oilers bandwagon. It's just that none of the players seem interested in driving us anywhere.

When the fans are more jacked up for the game than the players are – something is wrong.

We for one pity the poor old OilersNation, sitting there in the stands at RX1 and at home wanting something - anything - to cheer for. At a time when lots of folks are worried about losing their job, making rent and generally just getting by RX1 continues to sell out night after night. Once upon a time, there are a good many folk who were ballin’ out of control with Oil comfortably over $100 per barrel. Now, not so much. Yet these same folk continue to shoulder the bulk of the ticket buying load, making a conscious decision to continue to spend hundreds of their hard earned dollars on "Oilers hockey" game after terrible game. There they were again last night, filling the arena to high in the rafters and even patiently standing on those little standing room only squares. Honest, hard working blue collar folk who continue to arrive in droves despite the absolute and total lack of commitment and desire to win on the ice that awaits them. And did they boo this awful bunch of cheque collecting, merlot drinking sissies? No. They sat glued to their seats hoping one of the players in Copper and Blue might find something resembling a beating heart late in the third period and step up to the plate.

In times like these it’s staggering to realize that most people inside Rexall probably worked harder to get into the game than the bulk of the Oilers did during the game.

When your 46 year old goalie is starting his 98th game in a row – something is wrong.

When we saw Roloson face the media, tired as all hell, older than all hell, sweaty as all hell and having done all he could and yet taking the blame for the loss something inside us snapped. Are you kidding us Oilers? How in the sweet holy fuck can any of you sit around in the dressing room and see the old man in the corner who is absolutely busting his nuts and not feel guilty about the level to which you mail it in night after night? We can’t help but feel terrible for Roloson at this stage of the game. So you let in a couple of floaters early on Roli. Who gives a shit? See the other guys sitting there on the bench wearing the same jersey as you? Those idiots are supposed to do more than come down and give you a supportive whack on the pads after they have collapsed yet again. They are supposed to go down into the opposition’s end and score a few of their own and bail you out.

Nothing here is your fault Sir. We salute your efforts. You are an absolute warrior and if we have ever chirped you on this site we humbly apologize. The rest of you Oilers? Whatever.

When you need a leader to step up and pop in a late goal and nothing arrives – something is wrong.

Where in the fuck was anything resembling a leader with the season hanging in the balance? Where was a single one of these overpriced boneheads when it counted? Nowhere, that’s where and it breaks our fucking heart to see this team mail it in night after night. What the hell is Kay-Z paying for here exactly? The cheques that you deposit with charming regularity are real gentlemen. The effort most of you are putting out on the other hand - is not.

Shame on the whole fucking team except Roli. Do any of you have any interest in stepping up and saving this season? Any of you at all? Hemsky - you seem to be a talent. Where are you with the game on the line last night? Horcoff? What about you? You have taken mad heat for signing a huge contract. Why not quiet your haters by popping in a goal here or there? We could go on down the list, but what is the use?

The I told you sos

Yeah Brownlee we get it. You predicted that the Oilers wouldn’t make the playoffs. This entire team is riddled with problems and you saw that and were able to inspire the legions of Oilers haters all year. You haters were all so wise and gave up on the team in the preseason whereas it took us till game 76 of a terrible season before we had our fill. Well you know what? We would rather have hope for 7 months of the year that things could turn out than write them off before the season rolls.

But that’s just how we roll.

And all the people that are going to come on here today and tell us how smart they were to know that the team sucked the entire year and this result was a foregone conclusion? Fuck you too. It's hilarious that you would surface now to rub salt in the wounds of the thousands on here that have lived and died with this team the entire season. If we could meet some of you in person this morning we would sucker punch you directly in the face and then stand over you waiting to see if you have any interest in making other smart ass remarks. So shut it. Brownlee is a professional journalist who isn't supposed to be a fan of the team. We understand why he makes predictions and then stands by them. The rest of you so called fans that come on here to hate - what possible motivation do you have to get up in the morning? To shit on everyone else's parade?

The Oilers should never have traded Ryan Smyth. He would have scored last night with the season on the line.

There we said it.

I hate to say it but my friends floated this out there and it makes a ton of sense. Roli should sign for peanuts and go to Detroit. He has a way better chance of winning there than he does winning here in the next few years. The team competes every night. He won't be the only one showing up on a nightly basis. I'd be surprised if he's back in an Oilers uniform next year. It's going to be a an interesting off-season.

If, and I guess when, the Oil don't make the dance I'm going with the Bruins all the way. I have such a hard on for Milan Lucic. And that team has been unreal all year. And they are in the Eastern Conference. So it's kind of like that cheating rule. If you are out of the time zone then it's acceptable.

Okay guys lets all settle down. I know we're all a little emotional about how terrible our own team is. I just like watching hockey. IS THAT SUCH A CRIME!!!!

It's not like I'm going to stop cheering for the Oilers. I just want to have something to do while the playoffs are on other than picking the lint off my balls. And if, say Boston does win the cup I'm not going to run around celebrating and shoving it in everyone's faces. I just have to pick a horse in order for it to be any fun. I cheer for the Dallas Cowboys too. I hope that's alright with everybody even though they aren't the Oilers. Sorry I've offended you so deeply.

I too will be cheering for the Bruins but I've been a fan of them for a long time. I can't remember which came first but I've been a fan of the Oil since I was young as well. I've suffered through a lot between them and the Oilers. I certainly get more emotional when the Oilers win or lose so I guess I'm an Oilers fan that has always liked the Bruins. It's not the Oilers year so I hope it's the Bruins year. As for cheering for the Flames...NEVER. Never going to happen. They could be playing the Leafs/Ducks/Pens and I would never cheer for them. Canada's team my ass. I hate them with all the fire in every live volcano on the planet. It will never happen.

I gotta say, I'm an Oilers fan more than an NHL fan. Once the Oil are out, I'm done. I might watch the occasional playoff game if it's on, but it's hardly appointment viewing.

I am, however, still not giving up on this rag-tag group of shoe-loving, heartless, old-man-abusing teases to make the playoffs. Maybe even do some damage? I am truly that naive.

in the after game press comments MacT says "too many guys are just, too content to play a.....uhh..to be a non factor, rathern than be a factor to step up a play the game and be assertive"

So isn't he basically saying that too many guys were playing safe and were scared to make mistakes? This is a direct reaction to the way he has coached all year! If any guys made mistakes they were benched weren't they? So now at the fricken end of the year he's asking guys to play balls out and not worry about mistakes and they don;t respond? What a shocker!!! For that MacT should get the shocker. One in the pink and one in the stink!!

Can MacT coach "skill" players? I think that question has been answered. So...who comes in? The prospect of Crawford or Hartley, regardless of their respective records, makes me throw up in my mouth a little. Quinn? Don't see it. Sutter? No. Renney? Gretzky? This would be right up Katz & Lowe's alley, but I don't think he'd uproot the family to come back here.

I will never cheer for another team if the Oil are out...the concept is ridiculous to me.

Kevin Lowe has been exposed as a fraud. Lowe has had years and years; money out the wazooo; tonnes of support from ownership; and he's assembled a crappy, heartless team that is going nowhere... UFA's beware! This franchise is in utter disarray! From Hemsky to Reddox... nobody should be safe!

This was the show me year. Four years with money. Three years without Pronger. Every single guy on that roster put in place by a GM who seems to forgotten everything about winning. I know this post is SH!T to read. I know this rant solves nothing.... I'm just so DAMNED ANGRY!

I don't even know what Tambellini can possibly do to fix things... This pretty much this entire crap-pile (except for a goaltender) is under contract for next season!!!!!

I can assure you that there is no content drop off here at the Nation. Last summer we grew 5x during the offseason with continual content throughout the summer. This offseason will be the same - 1 to 2 articles per day.

My favorite part about the Nation during last years playoffs was ripping on all the teams for being brutal, comparing them to the Oil who were long gone home already and showing how the Oil were better than all of the playoff bound teams.

Like many others here, I'm just disgusted and disappointed in the team. For me, the season is over. I'll still watch every game, I'll still hope against hope for a miracle, though. I did in the mid-90s, how can I not do so now?

Say what you will about the players, but I think the problem is far graver than that. I think its the system itself here in Edmonton. Lowe, Mactavish and others. The entire system here seems to choke the life out of the team unless everything fits just perfectly and you get a flash in the pan (the 06 cup run).

Too many players come and want to go (and then do better or enjoy themselves more elsewhere). Too many times has the system brought in new players, developed young players to see everything flounder in a rough status quo for it to be merely the players' fault. Everything from scouting to trainers needs to be looked at, in my opinion.

Its just.. nigh-criminal how mismanaged the team has been (even prior to the Low/Mact era).

Personally, come playoffs I'll be cheering for Washington, because they seem to actually enjoy the game there. Say what you will about 8 -- he has fun out there on the ice. That's good hockey.

Still, even as I cheer for the Caps I'll be wearing my Oilers jersey and thinking about them; the wasted potential, the frustrating lack of results and the brutal idiocy at the helm.

I'll always cheer for and love my Oilers.. but damnit, its just not fun anymore, and watching the players on the ice.. I think they're in the same boat.

Soo, Tencer's blog has an audio clip of the Oilers asking for our support during this home stand. They want us to cheer loudly and not boo them. They want us to remember the cup run and how much fun it was.

I know what would make people cheer louder...lower the ticket prices about 45 dollars per seat, sell beer at about 5 dollars less per cup and make it so you don't have to wait 15 minutes to get into a washroom at intermission....then maybe the rx1 faithful would be in a more forgiving mood when things go south.

Don't you just love the way Horcoff blames the fans for thier home record? Who plays the game Horc? Give us a reason to cheer not boo. Your a sad case for a first line center. You get more minutes than any first line center. Reasoner can win more facesoffs at 1/10th the price. What was Lowe thinking in that extension. Look in the mirror before you blame the fans.
