Oilers trade Erik Cole for Patrick O'Sullivan Ales Kotalik

I got really excited when I saw the words "four-way," but then I realized it was followed by the word "trade." After that, I was only sort of excited.

I was mostly following the action on Twitter because ther's no functional TV here at work, and I didn't want the boss to see TSN.ca or the Score open on my browser all day. Still here are the relevant details on the trade (from TSN.ca):

The Edmonton Oilers got busy late in the proceedings on NHL trade deadline day as they have acquired forward Patrick O'Sullivan in a pair of deals involving four teams. [...] The Oilers were not done there as they sent a second round draft pick to the Buffalo Sabres for forward Ales Kotalik.

And here's a gem for you. Lynda Steele from Global Edmonton posted this on Twitter. Dean Millard when he found out about the trade:

deanmillard

So, Wanye's pissed about this trade, and it seems like a bunch of others are pretty ok with it. Is this good for the Oil? Does this improve our playoff hopes? Have no effect at all? Tell me what you think in the comments...

Bingofuel is the handsome cyborg who pulls all the levers behind the curtains of the OilersNation. When he isn't running the site, he's plugged into a wall socket, recharging. Or Brownlee and Wanye are playing "keep away" with him. He gets little to no respect.

I love this trade. O'Sullivan seems like a much better fit on the first line than Penner or *ugh* Reddox. The loss of Cole and the gain of Kotalik is kind of a wash IMO. I'm looking forward to seeing these guys in action.

Okay here's the elephant in the room.

O'Sullivan is one of these kids whose dad was a nutjob. Restraining order against the dad, I believe.

How well adjusted is he these days? I guess no way of knowing until he gets here.

O'Sullivan will be a nice 2nd line winger/centre while Kotalik will have the chance to finish what Hemsky starts.

Good job by Tambellini, a solid debut for the man (and I was ready to break something at 3pm when no word came from Oilers camp).

O'Sullivan has two more years left at a relatively good ~$3 MIL rate and maybe Kotalik re-signs if he catches fire playing with #83.

He's been just fine in LA, so I think staying out West in Edmonton will make things all the more easier on him.

I have family down in North Carolina where O'Sullivan is from (fancy that, the Canes get a state native and immediately trade him) and I remember hearing stories about Patrick and his father when he was drafted. Apparently the guy was beyond awful with his son beginning with his minor hockey days in Winston-Salem. Of course we all know how much worse things became once he entered the O...

I'm not so worried about that. Apparently Mike Comrie's dad was the type to complain about his kid's lack of ice time, and things worked out fine...oh wait...never mind.

I think if there were intangibles in lpay Rob Daum would know about them since he used to coach the guy. He was named to defensive forward for his team last year so that will make MacT happy as well.

I think this is a great 2nd line player, which in classic Oiler fashion they will try and force into a 1st line position.

With Sully here, that pretty much fills this team's quota for 5'11" American offensive talented forwards with "issues" attached to them during their OHL careers.

I would've looked at Dominic Moore. He's 14th in the league in faceoffs, has 12 goals, and was traded for a 2nd rounder (though a trade with Burke? ha!). Is he the perfect addition? No way. But he would've at least addressed our need for someone who can win a faceoff.

I agree, overpaying for Roberts or the like would've been much, much worse (don't get me wrong, O'Sullivan and Kotalik aren't chumps either). And like I said, kudos for getting SOMETHING for Cole.

Yeah I am going to post this comment twice on two articles.

As much as this trade pains me to say it, I seem to recall a certain writer on a certain website making a certain prediction 15 days ago:

http://www.oilersnation.com/2009/02/carolina-calling/

Who the hell needs TSN or SportsNet when you've got the Nation? What else could you need?

Hint: Erik Cole

"Holy smokes we've got a lot of forwards!"

- Steve Tambellini 3:05 pm March 4, 2009

Really, they have Poo, Robert N and JFJ in the press box with Smacintyre when Reddox plays. Brule, Potulny, Stone with Schremp on the farm. All these guys (except Schremp) will be on 1 ways next year won't they?

I guess Kotylik is just a rental so that will open up a spot but that is still a crowd.

If an NBA team comes looking for a small forward, we got them covered...

Love the trades.

For those complaining about O'Sullivan's size - who cares? Currently we have small guys who can't score (ie. Robert Nilsson and company). If the guy can put the puck in the net and set up some plays, I wouldn't care if the guy was the size of Sergei Puckizin.

It looks like its LA's which is good because 2nd round is reverse order than the 1st(the team that picks 30th gets the 31st pick/1st 2nd rounder) as we will almost 100% finish ahead of LA its better to have our 2nd than theirs.

If it was Calgarys originally than that's not as good but oh well.

I'm not sold on the Kotalik rental but if he develops some chemistry with Hemsky and he can be resigned that might change.

Trading with Buffalo huh...I guess that the Oil braintrust (Lowe/Tambi/MacT) and Buffy's (Regier/Ruff) have kissed and made up. Didnt Regier vow to never speak to the Oil again for signing Vanek ...or Buffy thinks they fleeced the Oil by getting a 2nd rounder for Kotalik.

It was Carolina's pick. The Oilers recieved Carolina's 2nd rounder and then used that to get Kotalik from Buffalo.

What is your question mark about Stortini? He is a very solid 4th line contributor. His game has really improved. Not sure how you can say for a moment he is more of a question that Jacques.

Kotalik will play with Hemsky and Horcoff. Hemsky was the one who told him he was coming to Edmonton. Hemsky called him before anyone from the Sabres or Oilers contacted him.

Hemsky and he are good buddies, and Hemsky wants to play with him. Kotalik has a bomb of a shot, and this move should re-energize Hemsky, who has been a bit lacklustre as of late. This team needs the #1 to carry them lots of nights if they are going anywhere.

Now I hope MacT doesn't screw up the new players by playing them into his system which is "you will get numerous chances to play on top line if you play like Reddox and Horc". That is turning scorers into defensive-first players (like himself)...if when they cannot play D nor remember how to score (cause they are too busy playing a defensive role), that is when you take away their confidence by sitting them out and if that doesn't work. You lambaste them in the media until they are swimming in circles looking for their lost confidence while under the fish bowl lights of the Rexall crowd...

This is a very good trade for the Oilers, indeed.

O'Sullivan 'could' be the answer beside Hemsky we've been looking for for how many years now. He's not a plodder, doesn't just muck it up in front of the net or in the corner, but can get it done on the rush, like Hemsky, is immensely talented, and is supposed to have great vision on the ice. We'll find out soon enough...

If it's Kotalik beside Hemsky he does have a couple things going for him already that everyone we have had beside him have not. He's a fellow countryman of Hemsky's, they're friends as a matter of fact, but most importantly, he's a one-shot scorer in my opinion.

None of this assures either of them success, but it looks way better than any other Oiler we've tried in that spot before to me.

I know McT is starting Ales Kotalik on Hemsky's other wing to start, and I think they could have some very good chemistry, as well. Either one of these two being a good fit, an actual, honest to goodness good fit with Hemsky for a change, would be an amazing feat for the Oilers.

Penner, nope...even the dearly departed Smyth, as hard as he tried, wasn't a good fit on the other side with Hemsky. I love Nilsson but he hasn't panned out on the top line either. Everybody we've tried so far hasn't been a natural fit with him.

I know he doesn't need to, especially not immediately, but I could see O'Sullivan eventually playing center on the Oilers top line instead of Horc...if he becomes better on faceoffs and is a natural there. I may be drunk on trade-talk right now, but here's a weird possibility...

Kotalik-O'Sullivan-Hemsky on the Oiles top line, in the distant future, but that's assuming a lot of things... like what? Well... Kotalik would have to work out really well with Hemsky and then sign here long-term, etc. O'Sullivan would have to be better at center than Horcoff or any other Oiler by that time (Brule, Cog, Gagner, etc...) but I do believe one day the Oil will look to move a more talented center beside Hemsky, but not now.

EITHER WAY, FINDING A WINGER TO PLAY WITH HEMSKY IS THE KEY TO THIS TRADE...now who will it be, Kotalik or O'Sullivan?

Two guys that can play on our top six and can shoot the puck for an impending UFA that was bound to walk at season's end anyway... I don't understand how anyone can have a problem with this deal.
