Journey to the Fin Du Monde

As loyal Nationeers are aware, something excellent happened last week – something that could only happen when a bunch of ridiculous Oilers fans band together to ensure that they're getting best coverage a young website can provide them with.
Like a pack of maddened, hockey-obsessed jackals, you goons got together and decided to fundraise to send a Nation writer to Montreal so you could get all the Entry Draft coverage you'd ever want. It started with a snide remark Brownlee made about Wanye being a "cheap screw".
And fair enough. Wanye's so cheap he steals empty cans of Lucky Lager and then comes to my place to fill them up with my über-expensive vitamin P. And I have to spend the next week sober. SOBER while trying to maintain order here.
But when long-time OilersNation commenter humantorch (currently livin' large in Holland) suggested he'd pitch in a few bucks to send Brownlee to cover the Draft, well... For those of you just joining us, this should get you up to speed.
Show me the money
I bet a lot of you are wondering how things are going so far. I'm pleased to say that there's no question anymore: we WILL be sending herr Gregor to the 2009 NHL Entry Draft this coming weekend. Will Fraser and Brownlee are even going to cover his show while he's gone!
Here's the breakdown for you:
TEAM 1260 donation: $1,000 Wanye's donation: $500
For a total of $1,500. Not bad, right? What's really astonishing, though, is you guys.
You have raised a whopping $1,815 at last count.
That makes for a grand total of $3,315!
Sweet shit, Nation! You've done it. Gregor, Club Supersex, schooners of Fin Du Monde beer... You'll have your Draft coverage!
Don't stop now
I'm only joking, of course. As stated before, any money raised exceeding what's required for Gregor to cover the Main Event over the weekend will be donated to the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation. So don't stop now! Let's try and get together an obscene amount of money for the kiddies, and I'll make sure Brownlee, Gregor and myself get a photo of us handing over a novelty-sized cheque to the fine men and women at the Stollery.
And who will that cheque be from?
Why, the fine Citizens of the OilersNation.com, of course.
La Fin Du Monde is an awful beer... ick sputter spit spit yuck.
@ Cam:
Seriously? I LOVE Fin du monde. But nothing beats my weekly dose of Pilsner. Good, cheap prairie beer.
Well done by everyone involved! The Stollery is a nice touch and sold me on the idea. Just chipped in a few bucks.
Wow nation, mighty damn good job. All this because of Wayne's drinking problem. As a great philosopher once said "beer, the cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems".
Great work Nation. I am so proud to be a citizen of this fine Nation because of all of you.
On a side note.... Vitamin P is moose piss. You friggin farmers and your pill. Easterners and their Keith's or Blue and the BC tree huggers with their Samsquanch piss kokanee. There is only one Beer. It's called CANADIAN! yummy.
@ Gandalf the Electric Blue:
Two articles in one day? HA Today is a special day.
@ bingofuel:
Mmmmmmmm, vitamin P really hits the spot. Way to go Nation!!!
Well done Nation!!! Be proud today!
Enjoy Gregor!
i survived numerous trips to belgium back in my metal days and the unibroue product is as close as Ive found to "belgian style" brews. Very fine stuff....
four thumbs up Oilers nation!
God loves the Prairies and always will...that's why God gave the Prairies delicious Pil...Our lakes are filled with Pil, it's flowing thru our veins, we drink Pil from the skies when it rains.
As history has always told us, some of the best ideas ever thought up have come from within a drunken stupor. How else can you explain Smokey Baby Back Rib flavoured potato chips? Only a drunken fool with the munchies could adequately conceive of making a meat flavoured potato chip.
P.S. They're good. I mean, real good.

Seriously. And the only beer worse was Maudite, which is made by the same brewery.
Now that Lucky Lager on the other hand is good beer - and CHEAP, but not quite as good as Hoegarden Beer, which is my favorite import.
@ The Towel Boy:
I used to work in a restaurant back in the 80's when the Chicken Wing fad started to take off. I remember we started out having Wing nights and if we sold 60 or 70 wings we were doing good. Then it turned from 60 to 70 to hundreds and then to thousands of Wings a night within a few months. The Farmer who delivered the chicken said that back in the day the Chicken Wings portion of the Chicken were usually thrown away or used in soup. Mad props to the drunken fool who thought up the Chicken Wing!
@ Travis Dakin:
I told you, Wanye vanished. Someone's got to hold down the fort!
Pil:
~Funny that Ratlanders like the stuff so much seein how it was originally brewed in Lethbridge.~
A funny movie behind the label on the website http://www.oldstylepilsner.com/home.php
BTW - Everyone deserve the 'attaboy award' the work done on Friday.
I am a fan of Big Rock's beer, Sleeman as well. I generally like to try out as many new things as I can. So what's the deal, is Gregor going to give blog updates all day, insider info, updated constantly on the Nation?
@ bingofuel:
I think Wanye is just nursing a massive hang over after drinking all of the 'Saskatchewan Champagne' he stole from you crib.
I prefer the 'pilsner' brew of Kokanee over the green diesel.
@ bingofuel: You're far more prolific than him. I like it.
@ erixon:
That's the idea. As many updates as often as possible.
The Towel Boy wrote:
It is really a very ancient idea. Our good friends the Persians (before trying to invade Greece and give us the movie 300) had the sage advice 'consider all matters drunk and then again in the morning sober. If it seemed good then they act upon it.'
Mind you, it is also the source of numerous unintended consequences/children too.
But still, well done Nation.
@ Gregor:
I'm listening to your show... You asked the question Hossa or Heatley?
Despite having a poor final; I think Hossa is a better overall player than Heatley. Hossa may also be available at a 7.5 cap hit without giving up other assets leaving Oilers management free to move players/salary to address other needs...
That said, if the Oilers want to win NOW, it may be worth considering that Hossa has played around 225 games in the last two years and is heading into another extremely short offseason. How big an effect will a double Stanley Cup hangover have on his game?
@ Chris:
Heatley Every single second of everty minute of every hour of every day, 365 time a year over Hossa. I've said it before, Hossa is just what Hemsky is on the verge of becoming. This team needs someone to play with Hemsky, not another player we need to find a match for.
@ Travis Dakin: I completely agree - we need a finisher for Hemsky and Gags to set-up. Hossa is a terrific player, but does not fill our holes. Also, if we were to sign Hossa, we'd be dealing from a position of weakness trying to rid ourselves of salary. every GM in the league would know we needed to have a fire sale.
I was just telling bingofuel over Twitter that while I'm shocked that my semi-drunken offhand comment here a few days ago got this whole thing rolling, the fact that the Oilers Nation staff decided to donate any excess raised to the Stollerey is the real Hero Moment of this entire thing, and I can't say "thank you" to them enough times for that.
Getting Gregor to the draft is a pretty cool accomplishment for a bunch of hockey nerds on the internet, but doing so while also raising well north of $1000 for sick kids? Pardon my french, but that's pretty f**king awesome.
You guys rule. 'Nuff said.
@ The Menace: Exactly. I'm tired of them half-assing the hole patching with good players in wrong positions. Need a left winger? Well holy crap one of the best in the game is available. TAKE HIM!
@ Travis Dakin: No kidding. And frankly, I don't care who we have to give up (aside from Hemsky and Gagner). We can hope that Cogliano will be pretty good one day (and I think he will be), but Heatley is a *great* player. no one we currently have in the organization has potential to be as good at thier position as Heatley is at his.
So it's Gregor in Montreal huh? I've seen him around town - the guy lives large. My guess is we're still about a grand short. ;)
We've spent 10+ years trying to rebuild this team around B+ players, and getting mediocre results (2006 aside). This is a proven A player at his position, that you can actually build an offense around. We would be nuts not to do everything we can to get him.
@ Travis Dakin: @ The Menace:
I agrree that Heatley looks like a better overall fit for the Oilers... but who is the better player? It's close.
As for fit, Heatley is a natural left winger; He's a true sniper; And most importantly, he may be had via trade... instead of risking missing out (AGAIN) during free agency.
When I said Hossa is the better overall player; I was referring to the total package. Hossa is more versatile than Heatley: he can play center, or either wing. Also, Hossa is generally regarded as being very defensively responsible, posts great offensive numbers, and has a refreshingly ego free, workmanlike attitude for a star.
That said, I think I'd be more excited to see Heatley in Oilers silks.
@ Travis Dakin:
DON'T EVER TALK ABOUT VIATMIN P LIKE THAT. Us good old southern Alberta boys have been smashing Pilsner since I was a strapping young farm hand!
Everytime I drink it, it's like an angel pissing down my throat!
Personally I think Heatly is the better fit of the two. We need a sniper. Also, Chris makes a good point about Hossa's workload over the last 2 seasons.
Now if we can get Heatly to come carrying a couple flats of Pil, we really have something going.
Just another reason why oiler fans are the most knowledgeable fans around. We send our own insider to the draft!
Funny thing is the nation has one more representative to send to the draft than Phoenix can afford!
What time does the Draft actually start on Friday?
@ Chris: I'd say Hossa is the more complete player too. But I honestly believe that Hemsky is a reasonable comparison, or rather will be one to to Hossa. They bring the same elements. Hemsky just needs a Heatley to play with.
@ The Menace: I said almost that exact thing over a BDHS. Cogs is good but will never be Heatley AND he will require a HUGE cap hit in the near future. No way we keep him and Gagner and get a superstar. Heatley is two superstars in one because he will make Hemsky one.
@ B-Rad: Just like I said... friggin farmers and their Pill. God that is some crap beer. haha I think it is the only beer I can't drink. I'd take a "Beer" beer (remeber the one in the peach coloured box with red writing?) or a BIG BEAR over that crap.
Travis Dakin wrote:
Or Mountain Crap...er...Crest.
@ Travis Dakin:
Pilsner (Originally Lethbridge Beer) can be quite tasty if served extremely cold... I'm talking frozen mug tooth ache cold. With Pil, the test of manhood has nothing to do with one's ability to down large quantities in short periods of time. The true test lies in the rare ablity to dodge the debilitating hangover that so often accompanies this delightfully cheap hootch. Alas, it is a test I'm no longer able to pass.

When I was in school I found ways to live it up on a small budget. I'm getting a ride to airport to save on wasted parking fees, and will be eating at every free media meal as possible.
Outside of blogs, I think some photos will be present. Since you are responsible for the trip, I will try to give you a sense of what happens. I just hope I don't have a repeat of my first ever work trip to Montreal.
Seeing an overweight scribe standing buck naked at the doorway to his room as I stumbled in at seven in the morning still haunts me today.

5 p.m. MST...Oilers pick should come in around 6 to 6:15 ish. That's if they keep the 10th...
Black Label was the best by far. When you are in college/university cheap beer tastes great. Black Label was a the beer of choice for a few years...Good times.
Don't make me come over there, Travis.
Jason - Just having some fun. I've wanted to come up to you and shake your hand, but you're always surrounded by the ladies. Let me tell you guys, Gregor is baller status!
Have a great trip and thanks for carrying the torch for all of us.
Geez... these people on this site sure makes a guy all warm and fuzzy on the inside. Thanks for giving everyone.
Brewhouse is the tops. It used to be $9 a case when you buy 6. That is money well spent.
@ BUCK75:
That video is awesome......... and I am from Battleford!!
Long live vitamin P

I was kidding with you too...I appreciate the thought and donations from all the readers.
Can I get a "Who saw this coming?"
