The morning after

Jason Gregor

partysover

It’s Monday morning and I’m bagged from an awesome weekend. The draft was a blast and was a great experience to take it in live from Montreal. Then Sunday my family had a party for my mother, who got her Doctorate in May. What an awesome achievement for her to fulfill a lifelong goal at the young age of 64. Good job, Mom!

I read Ray Ferraro’s article about how proud he was to see his son pull on a Red Wings jersey, and it was a similar feeling for me when I saw my Mom get her Doctorate on May 21st. The difference is I will never relate to that because there won’t be a Doctorate in my future… ha ha (?)

Bye bye Brodz

In the meantime, some thoughts on the Brodziak trade: The Oilers lost the trade, because they gave up a player who is already playing in the league for two who might never play in the NHL.

This trade was more about creating a spot for Gilbert Brule or Marc Pouliot to play centre on a regular basis next year. Brule has more grit and probably more offensive upside. Pouliot - of whom I am not a huge fan - is a better scorer but he is just as soft, if not softer than Brodziak.

After the draft I had a brief conversation with Steve Tambellini about the trade and what was his thinking when he pulled it off.

“We do need to change our line up a bit. We have too many bodies at forward. We are willing to give some people a chance who haven’t had a chance before.”

That’s where Brule and Pouliot come in.  He also hinted that he’d like to move another player before July 1st, so he would have a bit more room to sign a free agent. I don’t think that move will be a blockbuster type deal; rather it will be a deal similar to Brodziak.

I was told that Cogliano is not someone they are interested in dealing right now. Of course no player is untouchable, but they strongly believe he has a big upside.

Late-night return

I wrote a few weeks ago that the TEAM 1260 was going to make more changes, and they’ll unveil another change tomorrow night. After a nine month hiatus, a live local show will return weeknights from 9-12, starting Monday. Corey Graham will host Game Night, and he’ll have drop in co-hosts from time-to-time and is planning on making late night sports radio fun in Edmonton.

“The show will be pretty loose. I’m going to put a younger spin on it. We’re going to talk lots of hockey, but we’ll focus on other sports as well. I’m going to work on making the show fun and entertaining. Night time radio needs to be less about strict format, and more about fun, insightful sports talk. I hope to bring that starting Monday.”

Game night will be great for the station and the sports fan in Edmonton. The show will try a few different angles between now and the hockey season, so expect some interesting topics and ideas starting this Monday.

A big thank you goes out again to the readers of the Nation. It was a wild weekend - I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did and I gave you your money's worth. In talking to other media types at the draft, few could believe how I got to Montreal and the passion of the Oilers fans has been put on display yet again. If these three sites weren't already on the radar of national media personalities before, they are now.

Somewhere Wanye is smiling as he cracks open his first beer of the day.

Nice work this weekend Gregor, donations well spent I'm sure!

I was kinda disapointed that we didn't really do anything besides the Brodziak trade but I guess 24 other GM's didn't really do much either. Of corse Calgary landed Jaybo but I wasn't that shocked, stupid flamers.

I heard Tambo was labeled "Mr. Conservative", not really what I wanted to hear. Hopefully he has some moves in place for Wednesday.

I can't understand the Brodziak move. If you're giving away people for free (basically, that's what the deal came down to), why not give away MAP rather than Brodziak? Or if you're set on throwing Brodiak out the door, why not at least make him a throw-in sweetener on a real deal that will help your club? I think they threw away an asset here. Poorly handled. These Bigos and Roy guys had better turn out to be special players.

Great coverage over the weekend! Well worth the donation and there's no better cause than the Stollery. I'm pumped about the new late night show but have a question for Jason: If this show will be competing with Tencer, will the Oilers allow the players and coaching staff to be available for interviews with a competing station? I hope not as their is plenty of room in this market for two good shows.

@ Ender the Dragon: I am a little concerned about the faceoff dot now. Brodz was the only guy besides Horcoff who won more faceoffs than he lost last year. I hope Tambo has that particular thought on the brain as he cooks up some trades.

How was Brule's faceoff% last year in the AHL? If he wasn't strong down there then yikes, we totally lost when it comes to the Brodziak trade.

In today's Journal, Jim Matheson points out something already mentioned here on The Nation. EDMONTON MAY MAKE A FREE AGENT PLAY FOR NYR CHECKING CENTER BLAIR BETTS. He mentions how the local product played for Tom Renney and even has a quote from Glen Sather suggesting as much. I played a good chunk of my peewee and bantam hockey against Blair, and think he'd be a great fit.

@ Cam:

Absolutely right. And Brodz had pretty good numbers for the kind of minutes he was getting. While it is possible that Brule might be capable of the same performance (we'll see), all it will take is one injury to an Oiler center and I think that people will be remembering this trade with a lot less enthusiasm.

People also seem to forget that it wasn't Brodziak straight up for 2 picks. We had to give up Brodziak and the 161 pick which the Wild turned into Red Deer goaltender Darcy Kuemper. So are Kyles Bigos and Olivier Roy really that good that we felt the need to throw out a roster player that wins face-offs (an area that we already proved we were miserably lacking in last season)just to get one of them when we might have picked up the other at 161 anyway?

Great stuff Gregor! Friday especially. I am usually found on 5 different Oiler related sites on draft weekend, but this year I didn't bother. The posters on the other big two sites were just quoting you anyway. I read somewhere there was a quote where MPS stated interested in signing and joining the system right away. Do you beleive there's any chance he's not playing for Timra next year? Thanks

What really ticks me off is the fact the Oil did nothing to address the faceoff issue last year when they knew it was an issue.Pouliet???Give me a break...Tamlo is trying to save face for Lowe. They might as well of kept Brodz as the chicken is many degrees worse then Brodz. The only "grit" Quinn will see from Chicken Kiev is the grit that all chickens eat. Ok Tams, prove me wrong. TO OTT 191st overall pick (7th round) to Ottawa

TO EDM A sixth-round draft choice next season

You call that a small trade???

What do you people want from Tambo? Roster player for roster player? A deal that will be remembered in 20 minutes let alone 20 years? Do you think a team with as much success of late as the Oilers really needs to be shaken up that badly?

That was the only thing Tambo did this weekend that I had no problems with. This wasn't a particularly deep draft anyway, so taking a higher pick next year where you potentially pick up a noticeably better player; that makes a ton of sense to me.

To me, it shows patience and a willingness to build a really strong system for the future. I'd much rather that than the guy who makes the deal with the devil for 5 seasons of future sadness down the road in exchange for one or two reasonably good ones now.

This is a great quote and I agree with you completely Ender. I would be happy to see this system built if it meant a sustained place in the top 4 in the West. On a personal note I am getting quite used to having diddly squat to cheer for here on the Nation and don't know if my liver could handle a playoff run anytime soon.

@ everyone. Settle down! I'm not even an oil fan, but you guys are getting all bent out of shape over this? As I posted earlier, Matheson states not to pencil Brule or Pouliot in too fast, as they may go after Betts. Betts is a solid pk/faceoff guy. Bottom line - give em a week or 2 to address the issues. If they don't, then get all over them! A week from now they could have Betts and Malhotra in place and everyone will be saying how smart and well prepared Tambo is. Sheeesh.

I don't think Oiler fans are bipolar at all. Given the difficult nature of the past three years I think it's a testament to our stability that we remain interested in the team in the least. G7SCF to missing the playoffs three straight years. Yet RX1 has remained sold out the entire time?

Sounds like a model of consistency to me.

Where is the "more experience" that you speak of? If Tambo needed to get rid of Brodziak to make room for Brule - why didn't he just send Brodziak or Pouliot down last year?

Brule had more NHL experience than both of those guys heading into last season. He by far, outperformed those 2 in training camp but was sent down due to waiver concerns (is my guess).

When a club trades awway a bonifide roster player in Torres do you not think that they should be getting a player that can atleast play ahead of 51 an 78?

You can bet that we will have some new centres by Oct 1 or Tambo would not have pulled the trigger on the Brodz trade. Was Brodziak an RFA? Did he maybe want too many dollars? I remember how much they are willing to pay fourth line players (like GlenX) so that could be the motivation.

63 games vs. 11 games. Seems like more experience to me. I was just thinking of last year, but thank you for clearing that up. I had no idea that Brule has played that many NHL games! I hope he makes the cut, or that we get Betts or somebody else to fill the role.

Congratulations to your mom, Gregor. I have a lot of respect for people who accomplish things like that.

And on a different note, I didn't like the Brodziak trade but it's going to be hard to judge for sure until we see what Tambellini does over the summer. I do wish he hadn't been traded inside the division, but it's possible that Fletcher/Richards (who had him in Wilkes-Barre) were the highest bidders.

@ rindog:

They sent down Brule for a year because he had been rushed by Columbus and they wanted to give him a year to develop.

Last year in his age 21 season Brule got 24 pts in 39 games (.615 PPG). Brodziak got 32 pts in 56 AHL games (.571)in his age 21 season on a better team.

Obviously Brule was somehat better in junior. He still is only 22.

Brodziak is ahead of Brule right now but has likely reached his maximum potential. Brule likely will pass him in a year or two if he stays healthy and has the potential to significantly move up the depth chart.

Two things to keep in mind: 1)Edmonton is not going to win the Cup this year 2)The salary cap is going to go down next year and teams will be giving good players away for nothing.

If I am Tambi, I stay away from all the high priced guys, try and dump some salary, try to develop some low cost players and bide my time until the cap comes down and then take advantage.

As for the trade of our 7th for a 6th. Maybe Tambi will get a 5th for that 6th next year and so on year after year until he converts that 7th into a first!

I guess trading a fourth line center that got 14 goals last year to bring up Brule or Poo is a smart move. Can anyone tell me any other fourth line players in the league that scored 10? Tamb hasn't done any thing to improve the team. Blair Betts don't bust me up! We need at least two centerman and one player that likes to shoot the puck. What about the tender? Tambo needs to call up Mr Crackberry and get another phone cause the one he has doesn't work or he doesn't know how to use it!!!!!!!!!

I think everyone's gotta get over Brodziak.

There's a reason that all we got was a couple of draft picks. If he was worth more, he would get more.

Fourth line centres who aren't physical and don't bring any offense are more than just a dime-a-dozen - there's a whole other league full of them too (AHL).

Sure he won a couple draws but I really don't think Tambo is going to completely ignore the club's lack of faceoff men and a good checking centre.

Relax. It's June 30th.

I for one am in agreement with all those who are suggesting Tambo hasn't had sufficient time to improve our hockey team. He did some favorable things at the trade deadline, made some decent draft choices, and moved an apparent underachiever. For all those who think he's already failed (@ryan for instance)...cut the guy some slack. Let's see what the team looks like in Sept/Oct before we send out the lynch mob FFS!
