Gregor rings... Heatley stays in Ottawa

10:14pm MDT update: Heatley will not waive his no-trade clause. He stays in Ottawa, and won't come here.
Earlier tonight: Just got off the phone with Gregor:
"The Oilers have traded Dustin Penner, Ladislav Smid and Andrew Cogliano for Dany Heatley. This will add $2.1 million to the Oilers' payroll."
He also mentioned that Hossa talks with LA have broken off.
Finally, the handsome devil teased me with this one: the Oil aren't done dealing yet.
OH EM GEE

... that was mean
Spoke to a representative of a few of the players being mentioned as part of the package and he said there was never an indication from Heatley's camp that he waived it-nor did the teams confirm the deal was done-now they had to call their clients and let them know that yes they were part of a potential package but that it is not done. To say they are pissed is an understatement. Now the Oilers have to mend fences specifically w/ cogliano more so then Penner and Smid. Too say the team jumped the gun was an understatement. The oilers et al now have a sh!?? Storm to deal with.

I was thinking about that this afternoon... But more importantly, What gives these players the right to sign these 5 year deals, and then all of a sudden say " I think I would like a trade now" ala Pronger, Heatley. I hate Pronger for it, I hope Heatley comes, but really? GM's should have the power to say Nope, your playing. You signed a contract, your ass belongs to me... It's not right.
come hockey gods. a guy lost his life, something heatley has to carry the rest of his life.
What kind of F*ckary is this? Now Darren Malard reporting that Heatley hasn't even been asked to waive for this deal (Edmonton is on his okayed list). Agent is probably using the extra 24 hours to get Heatley to Rangers (his first choice) and Senators using it to pit Rangers against Oilers for bidding war. I would like to see the Oilers pull out now. Hardly ethical that Oiler deal is revealed and then Rangers get to match or better it. Very Fishy indeed!

does he carry it in the same pocket as his 7.5 million a year or the other butt cheek?
@ thashiznit: or heres a better one. no guaranteed contracts a la NFL

Jeez Iz. Tasteless. Why don't free agents wanna come here? Here's hoping that hockey players have better things to do than ever read comments like that... jeanshorts wrote:
... and THAT too!
Why is do we constantly have to deal with this much drama here?
Now I think that this is Bryan Murray getting his revenge for the Comrie situation. I'm guessing he knew all along that he had another day.
what a ----ed up trade that would have been for the oil - sure dump Penner, but Cogliano no way -BIG TIME up and comer & for Smid I think we will see an upside all that for over 2 mill more a year in payroll for a crybaby jerkoff from cowtown who can not even drive - no thanks
@ sean:
Man if thats true, not good. WTF is going on with Ottawa related NHL media??!! All this leaked information is so damaging to the teams, cities and players involved. Bush league, bush league.

Wow... The NHL is a bush league. Nylander freezes the Oilers on free agency day... no compensation. Heatley's agent turns private negotiations into a public bidding war (again frrezing the team on free agency day)... I think the Oilers need to file some lawsuits... Was Tambo lied to about the deadline?
gdawg wrote:
I mean the whole "traded, not traded" non-sense. Does this crap happen anywhere else?
could it be possible sens leaked this info to start the rumoured bidding war for a player everyone cooled on the past week?

haha. AHHH DEEP OIL, those were the days. Seriously Sam the Man, im with everyone else on this one, you need to slow your roll dude. Gregor is legit, and he was in pretty esteemed company in terms of Mackenzie reporting it too. Just a question Deep Oil, I mean sam the man, do you have a deep need to have hundreds of people you don't know hate you?
This is a load of crap, I can see why the Oilers have been loathe to hand out no trade or movement clauses over the years.
I know it's not how the system or contracts work but the day Heatley demanded a trade is the day that he waived his no movement clause IMO. Which obviously counts for nothing.
I hope the Oilers keep the deal on the backburner and then trash just afternoon tommorow by signing one of the UFA's out there.

This town is looking for a shred of good news in a time where good news is few and far between. You are right though, it seems only oilers have this fate the past few years.
One day someone has to fill me in on the legend of Deep Oil.
Heatley is using the Oilers to get better offers from the teams he really wants to go to (San Jose and NYR). I suggested this a few weeks ago and people laughed. If he ends up in Edmonton, it will be b/c the main players didnt offer enough.

Yup.

Does anyone else feel like Wile. E. Coyote trying to catch the roadrunner? The last few years have been ridiculous to the point where using rocket powered skated from the Acme company seems like a pretty good idea.
Had a chance to relax a bit - and overall I'm just pissed this is happening to our team again and again. I don't know where we are getting the 'No one wants to play here' stigma from. But we are feeding into it each time we use that as an excuse.
Now as for todays story - I am still going to rag on Gregor because he never owned up to breaking a story that was never confirmed. I dont care if the deal goes down tomorrow - he dropped the ball hard today. I, like Chris, am going to be a laughing stock for all the guys I ragged on all night based on what Gregor claimed was 110% done. A reporter has a responsibility to be accurate, and if they make a mistake (like all of us do), to just own up to it.
I would submit that Gregor was being a douchebag when he broke the story with his pompousness and arrogant - "Theres just the paperwork s*** line, and its done done done" rhetoric. Then when it was revealed that a major caveat in the deal wasn't satisfied, Gregor still goes on the offensive and blames it on every possible scenario instead of simply saying "I messed up". That would of been fine for me. Then Millard and the rest of the crew start talking about this that and everything in between - I'm just shaking my head thinking this is absolutely ridiculous and a laughing stock.
Frig man I was so excited. It was like an Oilers game, they go down 2 goals, mount a monstrous comeback, then just fall short at the end. Typical.
I hope the focus tomorrow is on the UFA's at 10am, we can atone for this still. There are guys like Laperriere, Betts, Neil, Pahlsson, Zigomanis, Moen etc out there that will make this team much tougher to play against. If we can't get the scorer, lets at least add the Ronny Low element back into this roster - when we couldnt score to save our souls but we'd beat the bloody hell out of you instead.
isnt heatley a right winger as it is?
we tried this experiment with erik nogoals cole last year and it failed.
i dont see how heater would move to the left and have more success..
hossa would make my week.
hes got some heart at least.

I am mixed about this whole Heatley deal now... I agree with this that maybe we should pull out of the Heatley Sweepstakes, but on the other hand if we don't get Heatley, how damaging is this to guys like Cogliano and Smid??? The only plus to not getting Heatley is that we get to keep Cogs and Smid, but will they want to be here???

A dude is on Tencer's show right now on 630 CHED ragging on Gregor. Tencer says that he has credible and reliable sources and was told not to go on air with the story that a deal was made.

I'm starting to climb on the "back out" camp. If it's truely down to us and the Rags and we pull out Ott loses in their return.
His rep is already tarnished here.
@ SAM THE MAN: Was that you on Tencer's show a minute or two ago taking shots at Gregor - albeit not naming him? Just curious.
jeanshorts wrote:
Okay, wait. When you say, "let's do it. We're going to Edmonton!" Are you meaning we as in Heatley and his freshly coiled doody or we as in the royal we? I need clarification.

i think you all fail to realize that unlike a ufa this is a gain via subtraction.
we take on a 7.5 cap hit, but deal out 6mil.
we only have 3ish mil now, we cant go out and get someone unless we dump a souray or gilbert for peanuts.
you really want that?
heater or lacavlier are the 2 best options for a better team, under the cap.
mattyfinch wrote:
why would vinnie l. want to come here?

Can't it be both? I like to think he has an entire room at his estate dedicated to hall of fame poops. You know, those real big coilers that you just have to take a picture of and send to all your friends. And also "we" as in the group of Yes Men he surrounds himself with so he has constant reassurance of how great he is.
jeanshorts wrote:

not saying he would, i was just giving examples.
the souray to la for johnson and company deal makes sense, but only if it accompanies a trade like this were we add offense.
otherwise we are worse off, and still wont have enough cashola to lure someone into what seems to be the a-nus of the nhl
gdawg wrote:
Why would anyone want to come here... Problem is we can't even lose properly so that we have a legit shot at a #1 pick in the draft...
I fear mediocrity will continue.
I thought for sure good things would happen after we hired the new coaches. Surely we could finally attract the high end players now... I don't get it...

@ Ogden Brother:
If Ottawa lied about the deadline to cause Tambo to lay down his cards to drive up the price... I want Murray charged with Tampering... or some applicable charge. This is even fishier than the Nylander fiasco. I don't care if Murray just made a mistake...
If Murray forwarded a copy of Heatley's contract to the Oilers and they also missed the extra 24 hours, then: shame on our lawyers... If we were negotiating based only on contract info provided by the Senators: HOLD SMOEONE ACCOUNTABLE. Cogliano is a quality asset. Tambellini didn't need to taint that relationship for nothing!
tried souray out?
what did he not do to impress you last season? honestly.
he was our best player outside the pillow in net.
@ RossCreek: He didn't name all of them, but mentioned Dreger & McK @ TSN.
