10:14pm MDT update: Heatley will not waive his no-trade clause. He stays in Ottawa, and won't come here.
Earlier tonight: Just got off the phone with Gregor:
"The Oilers have traded Dustin Penner, Ladislav Smid and Andrew Cogliano for Dany Heatley. This will add $2.1 million to the Oilers' payroll."
He also mentioned that Hossa talks with LA have broken off.
Finally, the handsome devil teased me with this one: the Oil aren't done dealing yet.
OH EM GEE

Boner!!!!!!!!!!
Lowetide is reporting the same thing. Cogliano's leaving makes me sad.
Great trade...we got Penner for free and lose his 4.25 Mil and get Heatly for Cogs and Smid....Keep it coming Tambo!
Not only am I impressed with the speed of your reporting, I'm also impressed with the speed of your Photoshop skills.
I don't understand how this isnt a great deal??
HELLO!!! Dustin Penner is gone!
the donair shops of edmonton are safe again!
wow...I really hope the nucks can sign the twins cause Edmonton finally has a top line. Congrats to you guys!
I was only hoping it wasn;t going to be Cogs. O'Sully will do quite fine though
Who saw this coming!?!?
@ teesix: Thanks... I'm a photoshop magician! I was going to add some halo effect, but didn't want to over do it.
GOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOILERS!!

I just peed my pants AND threw up a little in my mouth.
I'll believe it when @dantencer confirms. ;)
please stop flirting with me.....I mean.....if you were hinting that the Oil may be in the running for hossa.....of course....
Hate to see Cogs go! But I'm smokin my celebration Bong hit right now!! Welcome to the Oilers Heater!! Holding it in..........................exhale very tasty!
So do we go get hossa as well?
Jeez you guys. The server just went for crap again!
I'll admit what really bothers me is the Smid aspect of this. I can get moving Cogliano, even though it seems contrary to what the team seemed to be going towards.
But all three of them for Heatley? Penner is a lightning rod of controversy, so I won't go there, other than I think he's under-valued here by a lot of people, including by some in the organization by last year's tale of the tape. Still I can fully get behind moving him for Heatley; and it's probably a good thing for Penner. Same with Cogliano; he won't be as log-jammed in Ottawa, I'd wager.
In the short of it; I liked Smid and what he brought -- especially at the price tag and age. Time will tell if it was or wasn't an over-pay, but I hope management has a few other things in the fire to compensate, as alluded to up top. Our second line, as of now, worries me a lot.
Finally a finisher for Hemsky AND the Oil keep their top 4 D. Whoa!
Sad to see Cogs and Smid go but man this is a great deal for the Oil. Cogs is gonna be an RFA next season and Smid is this year. Penner...nuff said. 1.13 + 4.25 + 1.0 (estimate) = 6.38million. Adds 1.1 million to the Oils cap but gives a lot of lower priced prospects a chance to find a roster spot and develope. Who would have thought this would happen a month ago.
Who are the Oil still after?
I hate to be the guy that says it (if no one else does), but reports coming out are that it's not a done deal just yet. Sens saying they haven't heard from Heatley that he waived his NMC, and Tambellini is saying it's not a done deal yet. (as per TSN and also Dan Tencer). Argh.. come on, just get it done already!
DANY MOTHER F'n HEATLEY BOYS AND GIRLS!!!!!!

If by free you mean 1st, 2nd & 3rd, then yes.
Sorry, first time poster and got kinda excited...I even spelled "Heatley" wrong :)
End of the day,it's a good trade.
historic day in oiler nation
This is exciting. Well done making your mark, Tambellini.
heres the deal if hossa signs in edmonton and somehow we make that work salary wise i will be purchasing the 2009 2010 edmonton oilers team photo and doing things to it never done to a photo before...very happy with tambo this week...
Big luvs to Tambo.
we still need a goalie... yo wayne wheres the party?
@ Racki: I'm a little anxious on that one too man. If he pulls a Nylander on us (not quite the same but ya know...) the Nation's self-esteem will dip just shy of a 12 year old bulimic girl. *reflects sadly on childhood*
Hello, Triple H Line!!!
Great deal. Legitimate sniper for Penner (no need for comment), Cogliano (Todd Marchant clone) & Smid (this type of d-man is a dime a dozen). GO OILERS GO.
Its not confirmed yet.
@ Debonair Donair: Yah Nylander definitely comes immediately to mind. No, not the same situation as you mentioned.. but the same sort of excitement for the fans here crushed.
Well, just cross your fingers, everyone.
Sounds like Heatley just waived his NTC.
Says who, Eklund?
Excellent work by Tambellini, finally the oilers have a legit sniper and he unloaded a few contracts so he can make a few signings tomorrow! I'm pumped we got the best player in the deal!
IF this deal happens (if it hasn't already) I think its a good deal for both sides. Might be a real win-win. Between Cogs and Penner it would be no surprised if collectively they break 50-55 goals for a few seasons.
Should find out by 10PM. Thats when the bonus kicks in.
Sportsnet is reporting the deal is done.
Yeah for an hour they have said that. TSN hasn't reported it done yet.

Confirmed on Sportsnet, TSN.ca saying Heatley needs to waive the NTC... sounds pretty much done.

Safe again?! Penner being traded will single-handedly drive the donair industry into a recession.

It's a lot easier to get two 20 goal scorers to replace the ones that left (hell Brodziak scored 14 and we traded him for picks), then it is to get an mipact forty goal scorer.
With Smid being dealt, is this an opening for a Jack Johnson/Souray Trade? Not sure if JJ brings much grit, but it will unjam the D a bit.
The other good thing here is 3 contracts for 1.
@ Cam: Yeah, I agree with you there. Getting worried that the NMC won't be waived...
I think it might be time to g-g-ghost ride...
@ Amber McCormick: I don't know, old Patty Quinn looks like he could put away a hearty portion of mystery meat. Perhaps all hope is not lost...
@ Amber McCormick: of course you mean locally..right?
I'm buy the nearest Donair spot to the Rink in Ottawa. I got a real hunch, there's a boom coming.
1260 is confirming, but 630 isn't.
AArrrgggghh...10:00pm is almost here...and no Tencer confirmation....can't take it!
