Is that a Heater in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?

Robin Brownlee

You can believe all the talk this afternoon the Edmonton Oilers are in hot pursuit of Ottawa Senators malcontent Dany Heatley because I'm hearing the very same words from a source close to the situation.

In the wake of a report by TSN's Bob McKenzie that Oilers GM Steve Tambellini is pitching hard for Heatley, and with time ticking down until the Senators must pay him a $4-million bonus at midnight tonight, I'm hearing that Ottawa GM Bryan Murray is listening.

The names I'm getting as being in the mix are Dustin Penner, as was rumoured earlier today, and Ladislav Smid as part of a package for the talented Heatley.

"There's definitely something going on with Edmonton," a person I trust told me at 5 p.m. this afternoon.

THE NAME GAME

Of course, "something going on with Edmonton," is open to pretty broad interpretation, but it's the best information we've got with Murray and Tambellini staying tight-lipped -- perhaps they're too busy talking to each other to answer the telephone. As much peril as there is in the Oilers taking on Heatley's cap hit, you'd have to think there's just as much risk for Murray with Penner, who has been mediocre in two seasons with the Oilers and packs a $4.25 million cap hit.

Penner broke into the NHL with Anaheim after Murray's tenure as GM with the Ducks ended. Smid, who was drafted by Anaheim in 2004, didn't turn pro until after Murray was gone. Still, Murray knows both players.

While I'm not willing to make a quantum leap that ongoing talks between Tambellini and Murray are headed to a done deal -- there are indications Los Angeles and San Jose are also interested -- there's enough smoke here to believe there's some fire. If the Oilers come out on top in the Heatley sweepstakes -- an outcome that could be finalized by the stroke of midnight, given the $4-million bonus -- don't be surprised if Penner and Smid are involved.

I almost would feel bad for Penner it would take him some time to find a Donair shop. He might starve to death.

well thats a positive perspective. i havent been getting my hopes up for a big splash this year. *see the last few offseasons* if they can land heater, and maybe even clean up a little cap space, tambi could be in a better position than anyone thought.

my guess is that murray is really feeling the heat (pun intended) and his owner is telling him to get it down tonight.

@ brownlee

what do you think the chances are that calgary flips big dion for heatley now that they signed j-bo? trade scenarios can change pretty fast. are they in the hunt aswell?

Heatley has definitely got some questions when it comes to character, but man that left-handed shot would look good with Hemsky.

But what does it say about your career if you go from being traded for Hossa to being traded for Penner while you're still in your 20s.

@ jesse r: I think heazus is right Melnyk doesnt want to pay the 4m which may suggest that he is pushing Murray along. And lets say Mckenzie is right and its Penner, Smid and 1 or 2 prospects/picks and that close to fair value considering the circumstances.

It will look a lot better for us Oiler fans when the episode of Intervention featuring Penner and his Donair addiction hits the air if he is in Ottawa! Heatley for Penner and Smid + is way less than I thought we would have to pay, there could be more to this though. I would have taken Ottawa's fourth line grinder for Penner and his crate of frozen donairs at any point this season, so for Heatley (call him a quitter or not), this deal would be unreal! Regardless of 7.5m cap hit, we would be rid of Penner's inflated donair kitty that we pay him now!

Bouwmeester signing in Calgary isn't great, but its not too bad; their defensive core is going to be (or at least should be, barring injury or a horrendous year from someone) great, but the team has a plethora of other issues that Bouwmeester doesn't directly address, even if he makes the team stronger. His cap hit will make the rest of the Calgary off-season.. interesting in how they try to remedy their issues.

I'd like to see Heatley here, but like others I'd much prefer it to be Penner+Gilbert instead of Penner+Smid as the roster players; Smid brings something we have all too little of, has a low cap hit, good potential and I just plain like him more than Gilbert. Of course, that may be just why the rumours are indicating Ottawa wants Smid instead, and this way they shed some dollars. Its a pity Gainey wasn't sharing the kool-aid he had earlier...

Read it again. Penner and SMID. No chance Murray takes more salary than he's shipping out. Smid is in play because he's not going to be the $4 million cap hit that Gilbert is.

I think I am one of the few Penner supporters here.. I would rather see a combination of Gilbert and perhaps Patty O rather than Penner and Smid.. Check the numbers we are better when Penner is on the ice plus with no big body to screen on the powerplay that may hurt more than we anticipate

I am actually very happy today.

6.6 mil for a 40 point d-man who doesnt hit? You can have him Flamers.

Now you have the two most overrated (or maybe 2/3 incl. Jack johnson) dmen in the league taking up $13 mil per year against the cap.

Id rather not give up penners size and smids grit, but hey lets get er done

@ West Coast Oil: Essentially we are replacing Penner with Heatley and Smid with Gilbert (since we were almost guaranteed to lose 1 of our D).

I don't see how this trade can be viewed as anything other than a success, if it actually happens.
