Is that a Heater in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?

Robin Brownlee

You can believe all the talk this afternoon the Edmonton Oilers are in hot pursuit of Ottawa Senators malcontent Dany Heatley because I'm hearing the very same words from a source close to the situation.

In the wake of a report by TSN's Bob McKenzie that Oilers GM Steve Tambellini is pitching hard for Heatley, and with time ticking down until the Senators must pay him a $4-million bonus at midnight tonight, I'm hearing that Ottawa GM Bryan Murray is listening.

The names I'm getting as being in the mix are Dustin Penner, as was rumoured earlier today, and Ladislav Smid as part of a package for the talented Heatley.

"There's definitely something going on with Edmonton," a person I trust told me at 5 p.m. this afternoon.

THE NAME GAME

Of course, "something going on with Edmonton," is open to pretty broad interpretation, but it's the best information we've got with Murray and Tambellini staying tight-lipped -- perhaps they're too busy talking to each other to answer the telephone. As much peril as there is in the Oilers taking on Heatley's cap hit, you'd have to think there's just as much risk for Murray with Penner, who has been mediocre in two seasons with the Oilers and packs a $4.25 million cap hit.

Penner broke into the NHL with Anaheim after Murray's tenure as GM with the Ducks ended. Smid, who was drafted by Anaheim in 2004, didn't turn pro until after Murray was gone. Still, Murray knows both players.

While I'm not willing to make a quantum leap that ongoing talks between Tambellini and Murray are headed to a done deal -- there are indications Los Angeles and San Jose are also interested -- there's enough smoke here to believe there's some fire. If the Oilers come out on top in the Heatley sweepstakes -- an outcome that could be finalized by the stroke of midnight, given the $4-million bonus -- don't be surprised if Penner and Smid are involved.

Darn I dont know about this trade. We now still have a small second line and no big body to get in front of the net. We added a scorer but really havent gotten grittier on the top 2 lines. Im just hoping Tambo has more up his sleeve.

In the proverbial nutshell:

1) Neither Cogliano nor Penner has 50 goal potential

2)Penner is a distraction with a lousy contract and lousy return. Dumping both of those is a huge plus to this team.

3) Heatley is also a distraction with a not-so-great contract but I'll take his 50 goals any day over Penner sticking is mystery meat-eating ass in a goalies face to indirectly help others score

4)We lose our second best small young forward...plenty more where that comes from in our system. I'd say Cogliano never scored more than 30 at his absolute prime.

5) Smid was getting ok, but we're not losing a future Scott Stevens. Nothing I don't think we can reasonably replace in free agency.

Overall, I'd say it's a decent trade for both sides. Tie goes to whoever gets the best player. Tambi wins...yay!

This is an overpay, as I see it. We're getting a good player, and one who can hopefully mesh with Hemsky.. but, we're sending off a lot. Two 20 goal scorers, one which of (Cogliano) is one of our best young players, and one of our cheaper ones, who has plenty of potential left. Then you're tossing in Smid, who provides a nice bit of grit mixed with growing skill and ability, at a low price and also young.

Just.. ugh. If it was any combo of two of those three, I'd be able to stomach it. But all three? Someone else will probably lay it out well, but I can't. As much as I wanted Heatley to become an Oiler, this is too steep of a price. Unless Nilsson shows up for a full year or we find a better replacement, our 2nd line likely won't amount to much. And Smid was the one young defenceman of ours I really didn't want to see go.

I'm sorry to see Cogs go and expect to watch himgave a long and successful career as a legitimate NHL player, but you don't get something for nothing. Besides, how much is it worth to have the Penner fiasco behind us.

Let the Tambo era reign.

Danny Heatly is only 28 guys, Name 5 guys who have scored more goals since the lock out?

How long have we been waiting for a trigger man on the line with Hemmer?

This is great, and I don't think the Oil are done just yet. I see a Vernon Fiddler on our roof in the near future.

Is this really done yet? If so...I think I'm in agreement with most (not all) Oiler fans that it sucks to lose Cogs, but it is a necessary evil. Penner got paid too much, but thats not his fault. Smid, that kinda sucks as well, but we got back a superstar, a 50-goal scorer and a guy who is in his prime, who also has 5 years left on his contract...I think everyone wins in this deal.

I don't know about anyone else but basically this is a 2 for 1 deal. We lose Cogs and Smid and get to shed ole deadweight Penner. I hate to see Cogs and Smid go but the Oil are only 1 or 2 moves away from a competetive team...and I think that is all we want for the coming year!

I think with a pat quinn-coached team at some point this year we could see our 3 most talented players play together in Heatley-Gagner-Hemsky.

Horc is the quintessential 2nd line center and I think he will be much better in that role. He can kill penalties and not get so tired like last year.

I think we are now just one player away from challanging for the top of the west and thats in net.

I would like to see the Oil trade for Kari Lehtonen in Atlanta. He is a top-5 goalie in terms of talent and athleticism.

I love this deal: It clears out some contracts; And most importantly, it addresses our biggest hole without creating another. (maintains our top four D)

I will miss Cogs, but I didn't think the Oilers should build around two small centers anyway...

NOT an overpay, they needed some room on the contracts front and made two spots with this trade, plus they potentially gain AT LEAST 10 goals with this trade. Sad to see both Smid and Cogs go but you have to give value to get value. Now if they can just get a little tougher on the second/third line tomorrow and get a goal tender, maybe sign a face-off guy, a shut down defenceman... ugh this list is getting long. Lets all just be a LITTLE bit happy about this trade for 5 minutes before we hang Tambo for getting fleeced on the deal, mmmkay people?

Now way, Man. you need Horc on that first line to: A - win faceoffs B - Neither Hemsky or Heatley is known for their defensive play and we need to avoid the three on two scenarios.

Plus I would rather shelter Gagner on a second line so he can develop his faceoff ability a little more and be able to make some mistakes without it killing the team. We need to keep him creative; we saw this year what happens when he holds his stick too tight.
