Dany Heatley: next steps and options

Jason Gregor

heatley-questions

The Oilers haven’t backed off from acquiring Dany Heatley, but it sounds like they will have to sweeten the pot if they are going to get him out of Ottawa. The price has just went up according to Sens GM Bryan Murray.

Whether that means the Oilers have to add in some prospects, or take another salary off the books of the Senators is unclear. The unique thing about this deal is that even though the Sens have paid Heatley $4 million, if they trade him before the season starts that money won’t count against their cap.

The team that gets Heatley will only have to pay him $4 million in salary this year, but he is a $7.5 million cap hit on their books.

"Edmonton is the only option that has been presented to us, and you can't tell that there aren't more," J.P. Barry told Sportsnet.ca.

Well I’m not sure how many other options they truly have. The Rangers aren’t interested now that they have Gaborik, and supposedly Glen Sather had targeted Gaborik over Heatley anyways.

The Canucks can’t take him now that the Sedins’ have re-signed for a combined cap hit of $12.2 million per year, and the Wild landed Havlat.

So who are the other options?

I’m betting you think it’s the Kings. They have lots of cap space, are stacked with young players Ottawa would like and are a sexy location for Heatley.

But watch this.

Does that sound like the Kings are interested?

I don’t think so. Sorry Dany you won’t be living the life in LA.

I’ve been told that Heatley has seen this, and it is clear that the Kings are an unlikely destination.

So who else is there?

The San Jose Sharks possibly. But they have 15 players signed for $51 million already. Patrick Marleau has one year left on his deal, the Sens aren’t in love with Cheechoo, and so will the Sharks give up Clowe, Setoguchi and a D-man for Heatley? That would be pretty steep.

The Coyotes and Predators won’t be in the mix, so that doesn’t leave him many options.

Heatley needs to decide today, and so do the Oilers. I think it is time the Oilers ask for a decision from his camp. Is he in, or out?

And then the Oilers need to live with the decision, move on and look at other options to try and improve their team.

They offered a great deal to Ottawa, and the Sens wanted it — for a moment even Heatley seemed like he was willing to come, but he got cold feet and now he is dragging them on the beach in Kelowna.

Enough is enough. Make a decision a move on.

The decision needs to come today, and I think the Oilers need to make it, because it is evident that Heatley can’t make it himself.

@ OvenChicken8: hxxp://slapshot.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/07/03/free-agents-still-available-on-day-3/

That shows them all, Tanguay too similar to Hemmer. For Natural LW I want Fedotenko, Travis Moen.

C: Marchant, Sillinger, Malholtra or heck even Morrison. RW: Kovalev, Kotalik, or Bertuzzi (gonna get flack for that I know )

Likely trade people off top of my head: Kessel, Kovalchuk (unlikely), Marleau or Thornton, Briere, Gagne , Heatley, entire TB roster - with 30% turnover a season you're 10x more accurate than Eklund if you just name every Lightning member.

@ Fish: What?

The Captain should control the room and if he is segregating certain age groups of players then of course there is going to be a problem.

Yeah, if they would have won game 7 in 2006 they'd be much much more qualified. However, they lost that game, therefore they have no leadership and don't know what it takes to win.

*Update* Accorrding to Mikey you now need a Stanley Cup Ring to be considered a veteran in the NHL.

Why do you all think we need more free agents to solve this teams woes? We need to be more patient and rebuilt properly. I hope Katz et al have the patience and foresight to understand that the only wa to bring long term success to E-Twon is to rebuild through the draft. They need to have a couple more losing seasons to gain some high end picks and work on a long term plan. Take Chicago, Pittsburgh, or Calgary for example. These teams are "predominantly" built through the draft. It took some tough years of misery to get where they are. Once the foundation was there and a winning team appeared destined, then UFA's decided to play for those teams. There has to be a plan! 8th place is not enough anymore!

@ dumb: I give Moreau a little break in that regard. Hard to take over captainship and miss the better part of 2 years. The room wasnt his when he came back.

We used to have our young guys room with and even live with Jason Smith or veterans before... people who bled Copper and Blue. The only one I see doing that still would be Moreau, there is no one else really - all our young guys don't have that older figure around them all the time. I am not necessarily saying that is bad, could be more beneficial having Cogs and Gagner cultivate a great friendship, but it does create more of a separation between young and old. Maybe Greene told of his "Adventures in Babysitting" too many times

@ Fish: ~Yes that was my point exactly.

My point is this: Like most players in Edmonton, the fans here seem to overvalue the players. I don't think Moreau and Staois are these great heralded leaders that everyone here thinks they are. My example of this would be, THEIR team has never won. THEIR team hasn't even come close to winning except for that one spectacular summer. So what exactly makes them so great?

That's a BS statement, the guys all have work ethic, you have to in order to make it to the NHL, the problem comes when you have guy who are supposed to be leaders that are not good enough to handle the responsibility given to them. Our veterans haven't earned anything, just playing in the league for a long time entitles you to nothing, you need to win something.

We've all played with players that work their @ss off, but get nothing accomplished, I'd rather have a lazy Crosby than a hard working Reddox.

There is a plan, get into the playoffs. So 8th place IS enough to make it there, thus it is good enough for me.

Just remember '06 8th place Oilers made it to the finals ;)

@ Peter Pan:

Building through the draft is harder than just saying "let tank for four years and get some high draft picks". Especially when Katz and Lowe seem to have a win now mentality.

I would be happy if we somehow grabbed a tough centerman to win some faceoffs and play some PK and third/fourth line duties. We obviously arent going to be getting a whole crap load of new players by UFA but we do need a couple. 3 years with no playoffs is enough for me, cheering for the team that plays calgary is getting old.

I see you mention the entire Tamba Bay roster, someone please correct me if I am wrong but didn't LeCavaliers NMC kick in on July 1st. Not that a no movement clause means anything much these days.......

As an aside, I think it is hard to get on Tambelini or Lowe for sticking with this, we obviously don't know what was said in the meeting on July 1st and more and more this seems to be an issue between the GM and player agent. Until the Oilers or Heatley come out with their sides of the story I would reserve judgement.

For those wondering...

E5 - Somoene who is connected has told me the seal is 100% done. This is not a rumor. 1 minute ago from TweetDeck E4 - This rumor comes from more than one source with ties to the players or teams involved. 2 minutes ago from TweetDeck E3 - This rumor comes from a single source with ties somehow to the players or teams involved. 3 minutes ago from TweetDeck E2 - more than one reliable sources not in any way directly connected to the players or teams involved. It could be several E1s. 3 minutes ago from TweetDeck E1 - This is a rumor that comes from a single reliable source not in any way directly connected to the players or teams involved. 4 minutes ago from TweetDeck

There's the real version of Eklund's 'e' system... I know some of us had fun a day or 2 ago making up our own versions...

Basically if it ain't a e4, don't believe it and if its a e5, its probably already on TSN.

Well for instance, yesterday Beauchemin to Kings was e3 and to someone else (Blues?) was an e2, now today to the Leafs is e3. So its just rumor/gossip. If he puts e4 on something, then you can check it out, and like I said, if its e5 I've probably already found out about it elsewhere.

Can we stop with the suggestions that the Oilers are missing out on UFA's?

The Oil don't have the cap room to sign UFA's, so if we're going to get somebody it's going to be through trades.

And, i'm bored of the talk that we need to find someone to play with Hemsky. If Hemmer wants to be a superstar, then he needs to make those around him better, not wait til some 7-8M UFA comes in and makes HIM better.
