New arena: nothing to do with Heatley

new-arena-casino

I have some news that -- blessedly -- has nothing to do with Dany "WaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAH" Heatley. One of the members of my crack team of visual designers at the day-job was just sent this fabulous little gem about the Oil probably getting a new arena.

Note that this is still JUST RUMOUR. But it's compelling and sexy nonetheless. Directly quoting the e-mail we received:

Plan will unfold

The downtown Baccarat Casino land (on 104 Avenue between 101 Street and 104 Street), should soon be officially announced as the new hockey arena site and "precinct." The great man himself, Oilers and Rexall owner Darryl Katz, is expected to make the announcement and offer a few more tantalizing details, probably after the Rexall Edmonton Indy. All makes sense. The 11.5 acres of casino land was one of the top locations in the city-commissioned downtown arena feasibility study. It has LRT access and a central downtown location, plus more available "brown-field" land to the north and to the east, behind the under-construction EPCOR Tower of Power. The flag was raised when the local WAM (Western Asset Management) development company purchased the land from Gateway Casinos, with Gateway retaining the right to operate a new casino on the land.

Bingofuel is the handsome cyborg who pulls all the levers behind the curtains of the OilersNation. When he isn't running the site, he's plugged into a wall socket, recharging. Or Brownlee and Wanye are playing "keep away" with him. He gets little to no respect.

I hope you're right. I think Tambellini positioned himself rather nicely at this aft's presser. Leaving the ball in the court of Heatley/Murray makes Tambo look like he made the reasonable offer, and the Sens/H-bomb can go get stuffed.

I'm still a dany heatley proponent and don't see how you guys are not. Other than the leak of the names, there is nothing wrong with how the heatley camp is acting.

What happens if Heatley comes out and says "I wanted to make a decision and wasn't given the opportunity to. Simply put I had to think about it. I did and I now want to be an Edmonton Oiler. GOILERS!!!!"

He then continues on to score 40 goals, work hard, and be ok with the media, and everyone will be clinching his balls again.

Me = doubletime.

If he says its a go and acts ok about it, no one will remember Heatleygate.

Nice I'm stoked and don't even live in edmonton. I hope Mandel (or whoever is mayor now) he spends all of the civic tax money on it. All of it. Then increases taxes 2 fold because Katz wanted it made from gold.

I will then get my season tickets the year after and move home to love my brand new super arena.

This song just came on my MP3 player which was on random, i think its a sign. It must be played at RX1(2?) next time he's in town: hxxp://lyricwiki.org/Terror:Better_Off_Without_You Definitely the funnest band I've ever seen live.

A new arena would be so amazing. Especially if they do it right and make it a good place to hang around even when games aren't on. It sucks that RX1 is a ghost town all summer and between games.

@ Milli: Presser is on oilers site.

Heatley is the guy we want. Who cares about his attitude, I was leaning towards not wanting him also, but then I saw Yzerman on OTR. Simply put (paraphrased) he said "The guy and play hockey, and that is all I care about"

After that if he is good enough for Steve Y he is good enough for me.

If it happens, look how long its taken them to do the rest of the lrt. And can rexall last until 2013, cause if they are building a new arena I wonder if they are willing to throw some money into it.

too good to be true - has to do with qualifying offers:

Sources tell TSN the NHL and the NHLPA are investigating what might have been an enormous mistake by the Chicago Blackhawks. Chicago tendered qualifying offers to several key players this week, including Chris Versteeg, Cam Barker, Ben Eager, Colin Fraser, Aaron Johnson and Troy Brouwer, however the investigation underway is to determiner whether the qualifying offers were filed correctly. If not, there is the remote possibility the qualifying offers could be ruled invalid and the players listed above, conceivably, could be deemed unrestricted free agents because of the blunder. There are few details, but one source says the players involved didn't receive the necessary notification of the offers. The National Hockey League is in the process of trying to determine whether the situation was remedied in time. Chicago general manager Dale Tallon says the qualifying offers were mailed to the players in time, on June 29th, but says because of the July 1 holiday, some of the players didn't receive them in time. Tallon says fax copies of the offers were sent to the league, so he doesn't anticipate any significant fall out.

Barker, anyone?

Something else which helps give this rumour credibility is the proximity of Bell Tower to the arena. The Katz Group works out of Bell Tower I believe, so that means the new arena would be across the street.

Before we get to carried away about a new building maybe we should figure out what to do with the old one. It's a taxpayer funded arena and simply knocking it down doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Remember one of the biggest events of the year is the Canadian Finals Rodeo and a downtown arena isn't the best option (no place to keep livestock etc). And would Northlands complete directly with the new arena for concerts etc. I would like to hear answers to these questions before any taxpayer dollars go into this.

Robin or Jason (or anyone else who might know), Any idea how much revenue and taxes the Oilers generate for the city/province? I know I've said it alot, but I drive 2 - 3 times a year from Golden Bc, and the only reason I'm coming to Etown, is to wacth the mighty OIL ( and drink RX beers). It must be a grand a trip after BOOZE, food, gas, the wife SHOPING, etc....Now, I am not living there, so it won't effect my taxes, but I bet the money generated far exceeds the tax money spent, but again, if anyone knows, I'd be interested in hearing.

Vancouver still has the Pacific Coliseum and yes, it competes with GM Place for certain events like concerts, etc - plus that's where the Giants play. Unlike the 2 airports in town, I'd think it feasible to keep both arenas going even though we're a touch smaller than the Lower Mainland.

Part of me wants to agree with that. And I love the thought of results from a player! I like hard working guys, but part of me would be VERY happy with a JERK who can score. AND REALLY, is he that big of a jerk?

If Heatley was told by his agents there would be better options, I am not sure I would jump at the only offer I saw.

So we're upgrading from the hookers on 118th, to the drug addicts, winos, homeless guys, panhandlers AND hookers in front of the Baccarat. Niiiiiiice. I work downtown, and park in the Imperial lot behind that place, and, if I can go two consecutive days without seeing a cop poking a body for some sign of life on that little grassy knoll across from the Epcor construction site, I consider it a victory. Where are people going to go for a post-game drink? The Boyle Street Co-op? Well, hopefully, it'll inspire a lot of development, cuz it's going to need it. Here's hoping Batman delivers us a freaking sweet building, regardless. Stately Rexall Manor... yeah.

I was wondering this myself but after looking at the roster, who do the kings really want to move? Souray's worth is fairly high right now so I would think someone like Frolov could be had but do they want to remove him. I doubt Brown would be comming the other way considering he is locked up at a great price. Stoll could be brought back but would we really want to go that route again?

I think we should all give Kevin Lowe a big Bronx cheer for making the Oiler's situation such a resounding mess and then kicking himself upstairs. Now Tambo is up to his ass in alligators trying to fix it. Will the city's and the organization's reputations ever recover??

Robert Tychkowski in the Edmonton Sun today:

"The Oilers have a long history of botching things at the trade deadline or on July 1. Janne Niinimaa learned about his trade from TV, the Michael Nylander swap fell through, Mike Comrie to Anaheim fell through, Ryan Smyth's trade happened well after the deadline, the Erik Cole deal came down well after the deadline, while Cole was at lunch to toast the fact he hadn't been traded, and Monday with Heatley was a total disaster."

Now add Gogliano, Smid and Penner.

Thanks KLowe, thanks for such a grand legacy of smooth moves for us all to tell our grandkids about.

Priessing only played 22 games last season and IMO was more of a salary dump in this deal considering they're picking up 6.25. Don't forget they just added Rob Scuderi and Francois Beauchemin's name is still out there. Still a possible home for Souray, but does the Smyth acquisition leave them enough cap space or budget space to add Sheldon now?

How do you blame Lowe for the Cole issue when Tambo was the GM? Or this Heatley thing? And how can you blame anyone for Nylander other than Nylander's wife? You don't like Lowe, fine, but use arguments that are actually based on some sort of fact. Niniimaa and Comrie, that is it...great argument.

Good article: "They should get rid of Draper and Maltby next"

OK, maybe I can see their point. Drapes and Maltby are aging players who no longer contribute a whole lot. Detroit must keep them until they're ready to hang up the skates though.

Why? Because that's what makes Detroit a first-class organization. They treat their players with respect. Draper and Maltby are part of a core that were there for the 1997 Championship and have been there ever since.

They've earned the right to be Red Wings until they retire.

Don't think that other players around the league don't notice, because they do. That's why free agents want to play for Detroit, that's why Detroit is a premier destination for hockey.

That's why Detroit has great team chemistry and a sense of family that a lot of organizations just don't have.

Look at Chicago. Their MVP last season, Martin Havlat just had one of the best seasons of his career. Chicago only offered him a one-year contract when multiple other teams offered him long term contracts.

This would be the equivalent of Detroit cutting Dan Cleary loose after the playoffs he just had for us. Havlat was disrespected by the Blackhawks, plain and simple.

Detroit will never dump Draper and Maltby because they offer leadership, they still offer grit. They add to team chemistry.

They've been there since the beginning of Detroit's resurgence and they deserve to bow out only when they're ready.

-------------------------------------------

Thats why they call them core
