Rising from the ashes

Wanye
July 03 2009 12:28PM

You would think that in the wake of the Dany Heatley debacle, Oilers fans and Edmontonians would be standing in line to lie down on the proverbial train tracks and wait for the 12:15 Express to roll by and end all the suffering.

Instead we are seeing a shocking amount of people deciding that this isn’t an Edmonton problem – it’s a Heatley problem. And while people all over the internet are delighting in rubbing salt in our collective wounds, Oilers fans are flocking to this little website in increasingly overwhelming numbers to voice their support for their team and defending the City they love – regardless of the opinions of a handful of pro athletes.

Calling the bottom

stockchart11

You can probably mark July 2, 2009 down in your calendars as the bottom of stock in the Edmonton Oilers. Yeah the old stock price has taken a beating of late – of that there is no doubt. But whereas in the past many fans were seemingly content to remain silent, sit back and take shit from dink hockey players who spurned their hometown in the past – it’s different this time.

When we wrote a little article yesterday on this non-pornographic internet portal we were shooting from the hip - telling everyone down on the team and the city to grow a pair of proverbial balls and telling Dany Heatley to get stuffed in the process. It could have been a risky move – there could have been plenty of sass-bashing fans coming on here and explain to us how Heatley was in fact correct in his refusal to waive his NTC. Who would want to live somewhere so (gasp) cold right?

Little did we know that it instead unleashed a torrent of people who were seemingly waiting for a chance to show substantial pride in both the City of Edmonton and the Oilers.

The onslaught

Generally WanyeMail is a river of twitter alerts, herbal aphrodisiac sales pitches and other junkery. But in the past 24 hours we have been getting actual emails from actual people. Like over 40 emails.

Here are some excerpts:

“Hey Wayne – thanks for writing that article today. I was so happy to read that someone wasn’t ready to roll over and die at the feet of a bastard like Dany Heatley. The Oilers will be fine, just you wait!” “Hello OilersNation – as an Edmonton native now living in London, England I just wanted to thank you for writing that article encouraging Edmontonians to show pride in their city. I have lived overseas for over 20 years but I think of my hometown every day. Edmonton might be cold but it is really a fantastic city. People who don’t realize that should pull their heads out of the sand.” “WANYE – F****** rights!!!! Screw Heatley and anyone who doesn’t want to come to Edmonton. Things are bound to turn around. In Kay-Z we trust.” “Wanye – That was a great article you wrote today. I moved from Edmonton to Boston for school and stayed because of a job. I have been homesick for a good Skyreach Centre (now RX1) beer ever since. Your website has allowed me to feel as though I am back on Whyte Ave having a beer with my friends. I miss Edmonton terribly! GO OILERS!” “Just wanted to shoot you a quick email and tell you that I really enjoyed your article encouraging Oilers fans to get some swagger back in their stride. I am an Oilers fan living in Phoenix. I was a Gretzky fan in the 1980s and have stuck with the team ever since even though #99 is our Coach! I am always amazed every time I meet an Edmontonian at a hockey game. You guys are always so passionate and energetic yet polite and respectful. I know our Oilers will come back from this and will win the Cup again soon!”

A full disclaimer

cold

Yeah you know what? Yes, it’s cold here. And yes, we consider Southgate Mall’s recent “Aug 5” advertising campaign to be a landmark event in the past 3 years. And yes, our 100 foreign visitors in 2008 were shocked by how many people drive pickup trucks in Edmonton.

Big deal.

This is home and there are millions around the world and right here in Edmonton who wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. And eventually the Oil will land a superstar or two who will compliment the 20 or so Edmonton Oilers who are already proud to call Edmonton home. The team will win again - and in the meantime we will continue to freeze our bits off getting to RX1 to cheer them on. We wouldn't have it any other way.

And when it does turn around - and it will make no mistake - all of the nay sayers that are having a field day running down Edmonton and the Oilers all over the internet, TV and newspapers will receive an Oil stained sucker punch directly to the face courtesy of the proud members of the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club.

And from us there will be no mercy. Those who have jumped off the bandwagon will immediately be shot if trying to reboard the wagon by the likes of scorecoff hemmercules, socaldave, cambosmash, humantorch, KayleW, OvenChicken8, West Coast Oil and the thousands of other Oilers fans who are waiting for their day of redemption to arrive.

Calling the bottom Pt 2

stockchart21

The funny thing about picking a time to invest in a company is that if the fundamentals are strong – the bottom is exactly the right time to get involved. Everything goes through peaks and valleys. We are doubtlessly in a valley in right now. But with our Owner, the new management and coaching staff bound and determined to rebuild this team - things are strong. With a fan base so hilarious that over 200,000 people visited a website of this dubious quality in the past 30 days – sending a reporter to the draft in the process – things are strong. With a roster of players who are doubtlessly sitting back in their solid gold summer homes and watching the image beat down their team is currently receiving at the hands of Heatley, pumping iron and getting ready to defend RX1 in the fall, shoving revenge directly up the ass of the rest of the NHL in the process – things are strong.

Funny thing about calling the bottom of a market. Though things seem like they have hit rock bottom and it is only going to get worse, things actually only go in one direction:

Up.

Oh and that jam at the top of the post? Just some kickass mashup by another local gem Nik Kozub, who is probably cold as all hell in the winters too.

I put on for my City. Wanye Gretz, Edmonton, AB.

He can’t HATE Edmonton. Let’s get real! Has anyone stopped to consider that he's leaving FREAKING OTTAWA?!?! Not exactly a hot spot for entertainment or shopping, nor a very balmy winter climate! Don't get me wrong, Ottawa is a beautiful city, and the people there are very nice, but it’s not a metropolis that Edmonton is not. It’s about the same size and is littered with old politicians! Heck, until about 3 seasons ago ALL of it's professional sports teams struggled. Ironically Heatley’s actions (or non-actions) have given me a new desire to see Penner have a stellar year! Suddenly, he’s my favorite FREAKING Oiler! And Cogs and Smid still have worth to this team both now and or in a trade later. Heatley can change the face of an organization for sure, but with a self-centered quitter like him on the top line, YOU WILL NEVER WIN A CUP! It’s time for the Oilers organization to www.RESCINDTHEHEATLEYOFFER.COM !

When they closed our Edmonton location to centralize in The Center of the Universe, I refused to move. I thought long and hard about it and risked my job, but I wouldn't take their boner inducing offer. Somehow I managed to keep my job and avoid living in Toronto. I never thought back in the day I'd turn down great opportunities to stay here, but it was a no-brainer.

Mark Spector should be run out of Edmonton once and for all! I have lived in almost every province of our Great Country and I don't find ANY city to be better than good old E-town. We have the best fan base there is out there, we are the sole survivor of the WHA, and for that matter, won Lord Stanleys Cup shortly after joining the NHL.(5 Times) Pussies like Heatly and Pronger do not deserve to play in a Hockey Mecca like Oil Country. When each and every player steps onto the great white sheet at the Drug Dome donning Oiler silks there is a sense of pride that engulfs you like no other Arena in the world! The fact that Spector thinks its cold here, I suppose that he has never been in any other city in Canada during the winter because with the exception of Vancouver it IS bloody cold in every other Canadian city and even most of the Northern American cities! Although I wasn't born here I AM proud to say that I am now an Edmontonian living here in this melting pot of other transplanted Canadians who are also proud of Our City, Our Oilers, Our Eskimos and Our pot holes!! And damn the spoiled rich dumbass hockey players that can't see how this can be a truly great experience to live here! Thats all that I got to say about that!

They just trashed edmonton, as a city, for 10 minutes on team 1200. "it is like Hamilton/sudbury without all of the glitz" - followed by a lot of laughing - is a quote used.

Pretty much said though that the oil needed one player to sign there and then make it out to be a good city and the problem will be solved.

Why am I listening to an ottawa radio station in the middle of summer is a better question.

WOW Wayne, I have never gotten goosebumps and a sense of pride like that once in life, except for game 3 of the '06 finals. I feel more pride being an oilers fan after reading that than any one of the births of my 4 illegitmate children. Heatly is gonna be a cancer in either our locker room or Ottawas and if I have to choose, I would rather it be thiers. I agree, we will get our hero, our sniper, our Willaim Wallace, our dark Knight to carry this team to the upper echeleon of the NHL, and yes you are correct my friend, because when that happens BEWARE OF THE WRATH OF THE NATION. For all the negative press, all the haters, redemption os coming and hell hath no fury like an oilersnation scorned

Did anyone see Todd Harvey blast Edmonton on Off the Record yesterday? I can't remember the exact quote, but it was something along the lines of him saying who would want to go to Edmonton, you can't blame Heatley for not wanting to come there. He even acknowledged that Edmontonians will hate him for saying this, and although I expected a "just joking, Edmonton is great" comeback, it didn't happen. I wanted to slap that slow, under acheiving jack-ass in the face.

Frack yeah reading these posts builds up a person's pride in being an Oiler and more importantly an Edmontonian fan! There is something about struggling through -30 winters and banding together to push some stranger out of a snow bank that people in other cities just dont get! Oiler fans are proud no matter what and we may criticize the players who wear our proud jersey but that is only because it was players like Messier, Weight and Smyth who defended that jersey and and built its lore and if a player doesn't realice that they dont deserve to wear it! We hold the player in the jersey to the same standard we hold the jersey! We are world class and if you dont get that then too bad for you!

That would sting except that the closest thing that First Round washup saw to a Cup was when we took his rat moustache to the Finals in 2006 before sending him packing.

I guess the comeback to Todd Harvey saying "who would want to go to Edmonton" would be "where you pumping gas these days Todd Harvey? Nice career."

And this Millwall business is quite funny:

we move to Canada almost 8years ago coming from Romania. I hand-picked Edmonton after internet research on economy and potential. that and the fact that there were 2 things I've heard about Canada when I was a kid: Montreal Olimpics (Nadia Comaneci, eh?) and Edmonton Oilers (in 80's Romania? behind iron curtain...now that's what I call International Fame!) 8 years later still feels great to be so right!

I agree if anything we should get behind Dustin and cheer him on to be the best player possible! Say what you will about Penner taking the money, being out of shape or whatever.. But he was offered Edmonton and he took it and he has been a class guy in the dressing room. If anything if we support Penner its kind of a "we dont care what you think" attitude to the media folks out there who state his contract is an albatross! Like I said before we comment on our players but like hell anyone else has the right to! And I would personally have Dustin (happy to be in Edmonton longterm) Penner than Dany Heatley...

Why does everyone take Heatley's refusal as knock against Edmonton? It seems to me he has said essentially that he doesn't want to play for the Oilers. There is a difference after all.

Similarly, J Bo's decision to go to Calgary is likely more about the team than the city. Do you think J Bo cares about the downtown busines core, the LRT, the proximity to skiing (which he can't do), etc? He went there because the Flames have a *gag* good team.

If Heatley is saying he doesn't like Edmonton , why does the opinion of some 28 year old guy with part of a high school education really matter anyway?

Finally, I blame this on Mike Comrie. I bet he didn't have much good to say about the Oilers.

Great post again Wanye!

I live in Calgary and I agree with Bob Cob, McMahon is a barn. I will admit I love living in Calgary except for the resident sports team but Oiler fans are the best and Edmonton is awesome too.

Just to show you the greatness of Oiler fans in Cowtown, Anytime I wear my jersey/shirt or hat (either Oilers or Eskies) I get complete strangers in the mall or on the street say 'hey nice shirt/jersey' etc and we exchange a wink/nod just as acknowledgement of each other.

Also, just last weekend I was drivng home (w/family) to Calgary on the QE2 and some dude honked his horn passing me and held out an Oilers hat. I have a big Oilers logo sticker on the back window of my van. It was cool, n o one's ever done that before. So if a member of ON out there owns a grey Mazda rx-7 that honked at a blue Pontiac Montana last weekend - a shout out to you!!

The Oilers will always be part of me/my family.

Do you know the altered Grebs photo that we're talking about? It's brilliant, although I'm not sure who created it. If I had any web-brains I'd post it for you to see again, but sadly my skills are minimal. (I learned about F5 through this site just the other day, for example.)

On another note, there doesn't seem to be a link to contact information for the brains behind ON, otherwise I'd send it that way. Are you trying to avoid the sheer volume of love letters that would be pouring in your way?
