Tim Sestito Traded to New Jersey

sestito

As per the Edmonton Oilers official site, Steve Tambellini today traded prospect Tim Sestito to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a conditional draft pick.

The undrafted Sestito joined the Oilers’ professional system as a 22-year old in 2006, making his debut with the ECHL’s Stockton Thunder, and became a full-time AHL’er in 2007-08. This past season, Sestito made his NHL debut as part of Craig MacTavish’s effort to turn his fourth line into more of a crash-and-bang unit.

Sestito’s been a good soldier; he’s almost always described as a character player, and he is a willing mucker and grinder. Despite that, his offensive game is nearly non-existent, and he’s always been deep in the red in the plus/minus category.

This trade surprised me because the Oilers have always been enthusiastic about Sestito; he was signed to contracts while other players with comparable (or better)skillsets remained unsigned, and he was also named captain in Springfield last season. That said, this was probably a good decision; Sestito isn’t a difference maker even at the AHL level, and unlike many AHL’ers he was signed to a two-way contract. Given how many players the Oilers have had counting against their 50-man list the last few years, clearing away one with as a low a ceiling as Sestito simply makes sense.

@ DanMan:

You do realize that nearly every scout said the exact same thing as MacT when it came to Schremp?

Lacks foot speed, poor defensive positioning, etc... Sure he played well his first game up here last season but he trailed off in game 2 and 3.

Yeah Schremp sucks! WTMF? The guy got 3 points in three games last year on a team with one productive forward that missed the playoffs for the third year in a row. With a lame-duck coach who hated him, and wanted him to fail. Playing 7-9 minutezs a game with no PP time. How friggin ignorant some “fans” are. MacT says he sucks so he must suck, right guys? I say wait til he plays maybe 20 games before you judge? maybe 10? But 10 points in 10 games still wouldn’t be enough for you micromanaging experts who want to see more “COMPETE LEVEL”! There are more than a few guys ahead of Schremp on the depth chart who “suck”. I really hope Linus Omark gets traded before the Edmonton Prospect Backlash Bandwagon runs him over!!

Wait... Schremp only played four games last year? That can't be right... he's a prospect, he needs games to develop...

OH YEAH. There's a whole league, right below the NHL, called the AHL, where Schremp's played. Let's take a look at his numbers for a second...

69GP - 7G - 35A - 42PTS, -26

Stupid MacTavish! Why couldn't he see the simple logic in playing the 7-goal scoring, -26 bearing forward?

Now of course, I'm exagerrating a little here; Schremp's a decent prospect (long overrated and it's nice to see people rethinking that) and that's probably his floor, but he didn't go down to the AHL and make the Oilers regret demoting him. He did not earn an NHL roster spot, and he managed to drop beneath those who did - as one example, Ryan Potulny.

A reasonable evaluation of Schremp is here.

Unless “conditional” means “unconditional return of the 2003 theft of Parise for Pouliot and Jacques”, this won’t amount to much.

Okay, that's funny...I couldn't agree more. That whole draft made me so sick to my stomach that I actually decided to get a frontal labotomy. Now I don't remember what sport they play, and things are really good now - I think!

Sorry, I should have included the whole thing, including the poster's name...but it's my first time - honest. It has nothing to do with that labotomy! I needed that to get over the Oilers trading away the opportunity to get Zach Parise for Pouliiot and J.F. Jacques - wait...the Oiles did What?!! Oh my GOD!!! (Reschedules appointment with Dr. Hibbert.)

Jonathan - I'm not so sure you could even call Schremp a decent prospect anymore. Decent would imply potential, which we saw woefully little of last year. My guess is that this upcoming camp (if he's still around) will be the most important one of his life.

Schremp can turn last season around. The season before he was doing just fine in the A. New Coach, new set of eyes to evaluate him. I still think that one day the kid will pull it together. He's better off than Ryan O'Marra. Say what you want about the guy's mental make-up, but it takes a lot to be told you blow publicly and keep coming back for more abuse. Maybe at best he's a complimentary player who needs to be surrounded by talent before his skills can be taken advantage of. He can earn his way onto the team if he pulls it together in Springfield this year. I dont see a spot for him at all unless the Heatley trade goes through and one of the kids is gone. And Tambi said guys who havent been given much of a chance before will get a better shot this season. It probably wasnt said with Schremp in mind, but if it's a philosophy that applies to the whole club, then he has a better chance of at least coming out of camp in a better mind set than before.

And people say that edmonton has to overpay to get guys here. That Kotalik contract is an overpayment by at least 20-25% IMO.

I was listening to Gregor's show and he claimed that when all is said in done in the state of NY players will be paying roughly 50% in taxes, compared to 39% in Alberta. So the Rangers HAVE to overpay in order to overcome the loss of taxes.

50%?! ~Those socialist pig dogs!~
