Wherefore art thou, Dany Boy?

Robin Brownlee
August 22 2009 08:57AM

heatley-done

Well Dany Heatley certainly shed plenty of light on his reasons for not wanting to become an Edmonton Oiler when he finally addressed the media Friday, didn't he?

Did you expect anything different from Dour Dany, really? Did you expect clarity? Closure? The straight goods?

Do you feel better now that he graced us with his reasons for stiffing the Ottawa Senators and the Oilers with his trade demand and subsequent refusal to waive his no movement clause after Steve Tambellini put together a package of Dustin Penner, Andrew Cogliano and Ladislav Smid for the right to pay him $7.5 million a season?

To hear Heatley tell it, his tale of woe and mistreatment comes down to feeling his role has been "diminished" in Ottawa. His limbo is a hardship that can only be remedied by having "options" when it comes to picking a new team to play for, as long as that option isn’t the Oilers.

Isn't that about it?

What he said and what he meant

By now, we all know what Heatley said. Now, you can take it at face value or you can read between the lines. I'm going to take a swing at the latter, using my Spin Translation Tool, some software I got over the internet from the same company where I purchased a great set of steak knives.

WHAT HE SAID: "There's nothing with Edmonton personally, I just think when we asked for a trade we wanted to go about it together and we wanted some options and to this date there has only one option.

"At the time the only option was Edmonton and I wasn't ready to make a decision at that time and I'm still not ready to make a decision until there are other options."

WHAT HE MEANT: "Edmonton isn't an option. Look, boys, I'm no fool. I'm from Calgary. I know all about Alberta winters. Why should I freeze my lily white ass when I can play in San Jose or Los Angeles or Anaheim? You ever tried golfing in Edmonton the second week of April?

WHAT HE SAID: "I don't feel I can make the right decision until there are a few options. (The Oilers) were not on my initial list of teams I gave the Senators to talk to. When that trade came up it came as a big surprise and I wasn't ready at that time nor am I now to make that decision."

WHAT HE MEANT: "Look, man, I'm Dany F*cking Heatley. Are you trying to tell me there aren't six, seven or maybe eight teams out there dying to shove a stack of money my way? C'mon, Bryan, I'm calling BS on that one. I gave you a list of 28 teams. Edmonton was the only team NOT on that list. They've missed the playoffs, like, 13 years in a row."

WHAT HE SAID: "It's definitely not Cory solely. I think the main reason for me is when I signed in Ottawa two years ago I thought it was to be an integral part of the team over the last two years I feel my role has diminished and especially this past season it diminished a lot more. A diminished role is the biggest thing. I feel I'm a player who can play in a lot of different situations. I'm an offensive guy but I take pride in all aspects of the game and I don't feel I was given that role on the team."

WHAT HE MEANT: "Clouston's an asshole for expecting me to play within a team concept. Do this, Dany. Do that. Check. WTF? Who is this spank-off, anyway? This guy waltzes in, turns the team around and just expects me to become his yes-man? How much money does Clouston have in the bank? How many times has he scored 50 goals? As many times as Pat Quinn and Tom Renney, that's how many."

WHAT HE SAID: "I have a contract and I'm going to honour that contract. If I'm still a Senator at training camp time I'll be there ready to go. I'm a hockey player and I'll play to the best of my ability wherever I am. At the same time, we know there are other teams interested and hopefully something can get done."

WHAT HE MEANT: I don't give a pinch of stool if my presence at training camp causes the Senators a problem or a distraction. Like I'm going to do anything to void my contract and kiss off $7.5 million. Think again."

WHAT HE SAID: "I think anyone that has played with me knows I'm a team guy. The way this has gone this summer has been unfortunate, but as far as my reputation, anyone I have ever played with or played for has thought of me as a good teammate."

WHAT HE MEANT: So I'm an self-centred jerk with an inflated sense of entitlement, there’s a news bulletin. Stop the presses, you know what I'm saying? Look, even if I'm a dick, I'll get you 40 goals. That's all that matters, right?

Tambellini and Kevin Lowe know that. Otherwise they wouldn’t have come sniffing around, puckering up and saying pretty please. Like I'm going play with Shane Horcoff and Alex Hemsky. Screw that. I'm Dany F*cking Heatley."

I would like him to fine out the reason why players do not come to Edmonton be honest about it and try to fix the situation, no matter what it is, thru the radio and newspapers so Oilers don’t have to go thru that ever again.

You vastly overestimate the influence of the media in general and me in particular if you actually believe I can "fix the situation." Lowe has made plenty of mistakes -- see comment 44 for some of them -- and they've been pointed out, kicked around and dissected many times. If you're looking for me or anybody else with a notepad to re-visit all of them years after the fact, that's not realistic. "Hey Kevin, I know you're not the GM any more, but I'd like to go ever that crappy deal you made in 2006 again . . ." Or are you looking for somebody to write "Kevin Lowe has ruined this franchise and he should be fired" in the hope Daryl Katz will read it and say, "Gosh, I never thought of that." Hey, offering that opinion has some merit, but if you're looking for the media to get Lowe punted from his cush president of hockey operations title, I wouldn't hold my breath.

I thaught you could try. Deryl Katz might not read this site, then again we don't know that, but you also have a radio show and you can wright about it for news paper. He does not live in vacuum and, I am not saying he is stupid, he might have not realised some of it. Just think; so many people dream that they can do something but you actually did it! Wouldn't it be nice! And another thing. If you help K. Lowe out the door next GM will be afraid of you and give you information just to keep you happy.

There are no quick fixes when it comes to the Oilers Organization,Tambalini has been handed the keys to a lada and we expect him to have it run like a Ferrari,Maybe the Oilers organization can bring in someone like Rich Winter to help re build this team, lets face it we can use all the help we can get.

If only it were that easy, my friend. I assure you, Mr. Lowe is VERY entrenched in this team and it will take far more than a determined journalist to be rid of him.

I hate to say it, but how can you spell vacuum, but not "thought" or "write". lol

Anyways, on topic... Dany Heatley's speech wasn't anything we didn't already know, which was exactly what I expected from it. Oh well.

You don't get to be a bajillionaire by reading blogs sites, and "not realizing" what's bad for business. Katz does not read this site, and does not take business advice from a journalist, even if it is Robin F**king Brownlee.

Are you profoundly dim or do you just have a bag of airplane glue taped to your face right now?

Try to comprehend this: as an aside, when I want to know what players think about the pros and cons of playing in Edmonton, I don't ask somebody living in B.C. I ask the players.

I'm with you guys. While ON encourages open comment without employing heavy-handed moderation, some people don't realize when they have a good thing. Whoever the losers behind some of the ridiculous comments are, they're going to try to do their thing just because, well, they're zeroes.

While it can be fun slapping them down, that gets boring after awhile. How many comments out of the last 20 on this item are actually about hockey? I don't (at least I try not to) write off-the-wall, inflammatory items just to drive up traffic and comment totals. Yes, I want people to read what I write and, hopefully, it's spark some discussion because that's the whole point -- to grow this website.

But when an item draws 100 comments and 30-50 of those are childish scrawl and insults, we're getting off track. This website is supposed to be a place to talk hockey. It's not meant to be a drop-in centre for bored people whose only goal is to piss people off.

Grow up! It is a business. Yeah, every team in the NHL has honored every contract they have created. They never traded a player. You show me a team that has not traded a player that has commited to the community he plays in I will show you a team that has a right to complain.

You often hear people say things like "I feel less intelligent just for having read that."

I never fully grasped that concept until I read this statement.

I'm sure this has been addressed by now but I haven't read all the way through yet so I have no choice.

You are comparing Heatley to teams trading players who like their teams??????????????????????(more question marks denotes increased incredulity)

Heatley:

Specifically asked for NMC so the team could not move him against his will to another team. Then demanded a trade AND still demands to be able to hand pick his team.

This is clearly in opposition to the spirit of the contract. A NMC is designed to protect the player from being moved when he does not want to move. It is not meant to allow a player to FORCE a trade to a team of his choosing at the time of his choosing.

EVERY NHL TEAM:

Either can trade players BECAUSE THE CONTRACT ALLOWS IT OR OBTAINS PLAYERS PERMISSION TO DO SO. Every part of this is very much within the spirit of the contract.

Neither side is technically breaking contract but one Heatley is without question taking advantage of a clause in a way that was not intended by such a clause. NHL teams who trade players that like a team do not.

Which side seems to have less integrity in your comparison?

I'm assuming that by "link up with" you mean "create". Because that more accurately describes what we did.

And the answer is simple: Wanye and I wanted to "battle" other teams. Cross-posted game-day threads where people from each side get to chirp each other... Just like being at a game! That's where CanucksArmy and FlamesNation came from. And we even managed to find writers for those sites! So next season, if the Oil can do something magical, will be doubly awesome.

That's the dream, and it's slowly becoming a reality. But trolls take their toll. I'm not deleting that last sentence, so :P

Thanks for actually paying attention to what's been written -- not only in the last few days, but weeks and months -- before commenting. This fallacy that Lowe and Oilers management has somehow received a free pass is laughable. Lowe's mistakes and the shortcomings of this organization have been documented, discussed and rehashed over and over again. The problem appears to be that there isn't a weekly update reviewing those many shortcomings for the benefit of those with attention spans limited to hours or days.

@ cableguy: overpayments ,like what the Rangers did with Gomez and Dury a couple of season ago.All teams overpay UFA,epcially when a team is struggling to make the playoffs. Agin it was one women who did not like living in Edmonton.

what most sites do are find dedicated, reasonable users to moderate the comments. a simple "flag post" icon could alert mods of a potentially crap post asap. this shouldn't be so bad. at the very least a yes/no counter like TSN might help to weed out some of the crap.

More like we'll see you get accosted by Oilers MIB's and stripped of your sign and/or get dragged to the dungeon for interrogation. I've never seen a pro sports franchise try harder to NOT get fans involved.

~Except for Mark Scholz' scintillating time-out commentary.~

Loosely remembered from gregor's show,

Jones: "What do you have to say to the people of Edmonton?"

Heatley: "Edmonton is pretty similar to every other city in the league and I wish people would stop thinking their place sucks. Still, I was surprised to hear they were involved because they were not remotely close to winning last year and thus they were not on the list."

Shauger: "What did you think of Tambo showing up in Kelowna?"

Heatley: "They seemed like decent guys and we had a nice time. Its clear they really want me, and while the Oilers could maybe have a really competitive team in two or three years, I'm sick of losing. I want to go to any team that is a lock to make the playoffs with or without me, and then really contribute. I just want a chance to win."

I was surprised to hear how diplomatically he slaughtered Brian Murray and after listening I respect him way more. I even kinda hope he shows up.
