Mike Comrie signs with the Oil?

coms1

Now we don't disagree with Robin Brownlee about anything - ever. It's not because we are scared of him, but more we are scared of the things he would do to us if we ever angered him. Sure we love a good drive by shooting as much the next guy, but we are far too pretty to have our face rearranged by “BC’s most dangerous man 1977.”

But a couple of hours ago we were messaged by a guy we know who said “now that you have got your head out of your (edited) and returned to writing on the Nation, you might be interested in discussing the fact that it would appear Daryl Katz has personally wired up a one year deal for 1.3 million with Mike Comrie.” Our eyes shot out of our head so fast that we put down the bag of cans we were scavanging in the river valley and ran straight home screaming at the top of our lungs, bloody eye sockets and all.

Now we aren’t here to start a database of falsehoods in our best Eklund imitation. We aren’t going to engage in idle speculation about how billionaires are rarer than foreign tourists in Edmonton and how Bill Comrie and Daryl Katz are probably friends on some level which could have led to a dialogue being opened with Dot Com's camp. We wouldn’t presume to weigh in on an unlikely rumor that could be a potential disaster this season.

We won’t pretend that we know better than Brownlee who told us back on August 19:

“While Comrie, now 29, is good enough to play in the Oilers top six and could be had for a discount rate, like maybe $2 million in a one-year contract, it’s a profoundly bad idea on so many levels I don’t even know where to start.”

However interesting re-signing Comrie would be in an attempt to exercise the “everyone hates Edmonton” demons that began when he left town back in 2003 under a cloud of rumors and cloak-and-daggery, we won’t lower ourselves onto the slippery slope of discussing this in great detail.

But you can.

While it might be a good PR move, does this team really need a small size forward? Who goes if Comrie comes here? Nillson? And what if by some miracle, Jordon Eberele makes the team?

Comrie would be bad, he over achieves but for the price of 1.3 or 2 maybe that isnt bad, but still dont like Comrie in an Oilers jersey again. They should look at Avinaganov (no clue on the spelling and dont wanna look it up) or Satan. Both would look good on the first or second line.

@ Travis Dakin: This makes sense; Horcoff as the 3rd centre which, without considering salary, is his appropriate position.

@ DonDon: Everybody is sayin you can't have your 3rd Line center as a 5.5 cap hit. Well when your first line center is a 1.3 cap hit well then I say giv'er.

I think Oilers fans in general would welcome him back. If pronger demanded a trade out of philly back to edmonton, I'm sure fans would welcome him back too. The big picture is what's important here.

I think it would balance the team more. Unfortunately there arent a lot of options.

There are always options until you close the doors. People always want everything done yesterday, but I'd much rather see a big, solid checking center with a good FO% added in January than bringing in the wrong guy now, just because we're feeling like "OMG, it's 1:58AM and they're going to turn the lights on right away. Crap, she's fat but it's the best shot I got; better pull out the binaca . . .' There's a phrase for that mentality: Grasping at straws. It leads to serious remorse and depression upon more reasoned reflection. Well, for most of us. (you know who you are)

Comrie is not the answer; let's not get all desperate and pretend he is.

Sure... it might be a good signing... but WE DON'T NEED HIM.

Sign a guy we need. Jesus christ. Even if it means Nilsson would find his way out of Edmonton (to Springfield or otherwise), Nilsson isn't the problem.

Right now the top 6 is...

Penner - Horcoff - Hemsky Cogliano - Gagner - O'Sullivan or Nilsson

Comrie's arrival would send O'Sullivan to the 3rd line, and he is not a 3rd line player. He might fit the bill a bit, but it's a waste of his talent.

I won't address the hatred of Comrie, because I really don't care about that.

It's a just a stupid move. Address a god damn need for once.

Next thing we know, the Oil will ink an under-physical puck-moving defenseman.

No it sends Horcoff to the third line where he should be the most effective.

Because he doesn't fit anywhere els. Fine make him the number two center and put Gagner up on top. That's the extent of your oprions. Also, Comrie has been a 30 goal scorer on this team before.

@ Travis Dakin:

If you're seriously asking me whether I would prefer a 1C/3C tandem of Comrie/Horcoff or something else like Horcoff/David Steckel, then I don't know why we're still having the conversation. Steckel is 6'5", 222lbs, and was 58% in the dot last year. He's not the only guy like that.

"but Comrie's more prolific", right? Yeah, all that smurf-power last season netted him 2 more goals and 6 more assists. Oh, and Steckel was +2 while Comrie was -15.

The point is not to compare Steckel and Comrie (though it appears that's exactly what I've done; hmmmm . . .) but simply to point out that much more attractive options are available, particularly if you can wait until later in the season where pro-rated contracts become much more affordable. Let's not pass up Mr. Right for Mr. Right-Now.

So, has there been any confirmation at all about this supposed Comrie signing? He must be really hard up if he's actually considering playing for Lowe again.

Well, if nothing else it makes for an entertaining thread.

@ Ender the Dragon:

Is Steckel available though? From what we've been told the Oilers would probably have to give up a little more than they are willing to pry Steckel out of Washington.

I think you are just trying to make a point, and I agree that the Oilers really need to stop ditching the "well this player is available right now so lets take him instead of waiting to see what happens with the far better options that are out there". But I really don't think Comrie would be THAT horrible. As long as they don't sign him to some ludicrous long term contract. I'd be fine with them signing him to a one year deal and seeing how it plays out.

Oh that option is available? Well F*ck me why haven't they done that yet? Seriously man obviously there are more desirable options. Why not go get Stall as out 3C? Do you honestly believe that Tambellini has been just sitting around on his ass all summer?

Let's face it there are no other options and Mike Comrie at 1.3 is a pretty good bang for buck, and if he's a failure, so what, it's not like he's costing us an arm and a leg

@ Travis Dakin:

Of course not. But patience is what this is all about. Let's suppose for sake of argument that we can be almost as good up to the trade deadline without Comrie as with him. (Yeah, yeah, a thousand arguments; let me finish.) At the trade deadline, you start shopping the teams that realize they are about to enter the (somewhat familiar) mode that is 'rebuilding'. We then pick up someone who is both actually good and fits the role we need. The cap hit on a $4M player at that time is about the same as Mikie's yearly salary from day one. I know which way I'd go.

@ Ender the Dragon: In a 2006 world I love that idea. Unfortunately this team has shown that it is only capable of making the right moves at the deadline once in the last 6 years. I'm tired of holding hope all through the season that they may make a move in march. I want to see some wins in the season.

THAT would be a hyped ratings play.
