Miroslav Lazo

Miroslav Lazo is a player who is almost completely unknown in North America. An agitator who has spent most of his career with HC Slovan Bratislava in Slovakia, Lazo will be attending the Oilers main training camp this fall. I had never even heard of him until Lowetide mentioned him on Sunday, and a commenter on HFBoards offered this summary:

Regarding Lažo, he´s a skilled forward and he had his best season yet last year with Slovan, he´s been training with Ľubo Višňovský during the summer, so that might be a part of the reason he was invited to the camp. According to Lažo, the Oilers talked to Ľubo about him, so...Also there supposedly were two other NHL clubs interested in him, but the Oilers were the most serious. On the other hand he´s a also a git on the ice who loves to provoke thus the high number of penalty minutes and he has a bad habit to ens up in the penalty box at real bad times for his team. Although some might consider this part of him good in some situations, probably the only guy in the whole league who´d jump even into Pálffy.

According to Lazo, three different NHL clubs had an interest in bringing him into training camp, but after learning of the Oilers interest directly from Lubomir Visnovsky (who he trained with this summer) he decided to come to Edmonton.

Lazo’s numbers in Slovakia the past few seasons have been quite good:

  • 2008-09: 54GP – 24G – 30A – 54PTS, +21, 198 PIM
  • 2007-08: 50GP – 25G – 22A – 47PTS, +40, 210 PIM
  • 2006-07: 51GP – 18G – 20A – 38PTS, +22, 196 PIM

Lazo is also reportedly a strong skater; he won the fastest skater award at the 2006 Czech League vs. Slovak League all-star game. Despite the high penalty totals, he isn’t a big player; listed at just 5’10” and 190lbs.

He’s a long-shot to make the roster, but Lazo’s easily one of the more interesting players coming to training camp this fall.

Even if we could get him into the AHL. I guess the other problem is he is 32 already how much more does he have left? Could be someone that fights for that last spot on the fourth line though.

There was a time when a clip like that would have looked impressive to me, but all I see now is a terrible defensive play. The poor defenseman skates backwards about as well as I do and almost fell over himself getting out of Lazo's way.

Something else that intrigues me is we are inviting someone from across the world who is what a faster modified version of Stortini?, but we don't add someone like Betts who was what 15 minutes from Rexall?

Just curious as to what the NHL equivalent is of the Slovakian league (Slovak Extraliga). I don't recall seeing one on Desjardins' site.

By the way...Bob Stauffer on Oilers Lunch just said the Oil have officially signed Comrie for 1 year.

Betts is in Philli's camp. They have 1 contract available and Betts is playing for it.

Don't write this guy off as a novelty act; it wouldn't be completely off the map for him to make the team. After all, not many people had heard of Patrick Thoresen a few years ago either. Sometime, surprises happen in camp. A couple of good bounces, one of the new coaches likes what he sees over one of the 'regulars', . . .

Any indication on whether or not he'd play in the AHL if he didn't make the big club? Or would he return to Slovakia?

I'd say no chance in that happening.

If anything Comrie would do the normal flip or numbers. So he would be # 98. Or he will just pick something else (my vote goes here).

It would be nice if he would go to the AHL and try for the big club next year. If he and MPS both make the team we would be one fleet footed team.

Come on - we need the Comrie terms - anyone? RB?

I am in the camp that if it is 1 year at $1 - $1.5 million I am ok with the deal, but if it is something stupid like $2M+ I am going to throw my computer out my window.

No terms released yet besides that it's 1 year. Stauffer said it will be for less than $1.5M though...

I's like to see Cogliano on the PP. The guy has a decent shot and never seems to get his time.

As for Lazo, just returned from some time in Bratislava. In talking to someone who previously played in Slovakia with Lazo he indicated he's a bit crazy (and thus as my friend mentioned suited for the NHL), has a nice shot and good hands but his game sense is limited. Age will be a factor too. Anyway, a quick scouting report.
