Welcome Back, Comrie

wbc

It is official; Mike Comrie has signed a one-year deal with the Edmonton Oilers. At this moment terms are still unofficial, but it seems to be between $1- $1.3 million.

This story has been perplexing on many levels since the beginning. First off, our buddy Wanye Gretz was the one who broke this story. The guy who claims he is drunk 24/7 clearly finds time to get a few nuggets.

Even Hall of Famer Jim Matheson didn’t think this was possible, and David Staples shot it down as not happening. Looks like ole Wanye was bang on.

So how the hell did this happen?

It has become clear that this wasn’t a case of Daryl Katz begging Comrie to come here. The fact is Comrie wants to be here, maybe even more than the Oilers' original interest, and he pushed for this just as hard as the Oilers listened.

Whether you like Comrie or not, the fact is when he is on his game he competes hard for his size, and he has lots to play for. How many NHL players around the league have a chance to re-establish their character and reputation in their hometown?

What does this mean?

Last week Robert Nilsson told me it would be great if Comrie came here because he was a good player, but I don’t see any way that Nilsson can stick now that Comrie has signed. Even though Comrie has struggled the past few years, he has still proven more in his career than Nilsson has. And I’d bet that Comrie has more respect from inside the locker room than Nilsson, strictly because he has proven it.

Nilsson might have more natural skill, but the harsh reality is he hasn’t used it on a regular basis, and I don’t see him doing it in Edmonton.

Even though he won’t battle Comrie for a direct spot, I suspect that Marc Pouliot is another guy who will be on the outside looking in when camp breaks. His hockey sense is the issue with him, not his skill set or drive. He just hasn’t shown an ability to play the NHL game they way they want him to. Unless he has figured that out over the summer I don’t see him in the opening day lineup.

For all you redundancy soap boxers: What point is that really? Another small forward? Call it a replacement of one of the current small forwards (hopefully that happens). If and when comrie produces it will make some other underachiever redundant. Any upgrade on a team is a bonus. Exactly who would have the oilers got from this day to the start of the season that they could pay 1 mil that would be effective? a gridner? a tough guy? a guy who dishes out big hits? which one of those will produce offence for the team? Who is this mystery player? There is no player that would have came to this team. Dreaming only causes disappointment. Comrie is jut another part and there is nothing wrong with that. Comrie has scored 30 or more goals twice. how many oilers on the current roster have scored 30 goals in a season? how many of those seasons happened with the oil? probably ZERO on both accounts. In fact only 3 oilers in 10 yrs have scored 30 or more - Smyth (twice), Guerin and Comrie. comrie is more than a spare part that could really pay off. Were the Oil better before this signing? Upgrade. Ramone! - get that Swedish underachiever in the press box popcorn machine so Terry Jones can cover him in butter.

I dont care if he's small as long as he can score goals. In fact, if he can play a good game as a small guy he might be able to impart something onto the other small guys who are just starting their careers.

And maybe this is just the first of a few changes.

TSN is stating the deal is 1 year for 1.125 mil. Not too bad of a deal for our highest scoring player.

(sorry if this was reported in an earlier comment, i did not see it and the damn SuperComputer is acting up).

I initially hated this when the rumours started but now I am actually liking the signing. He's got a contract he can outperform, while I don't think he'll beat his best numbers here from the days of yore, I also don't think he will be too far off either.

I am looking forward to Nov. 15th now, Comrie-Kovalchuk rematch? Actually Atlanta-Edmonton games have been really rowdy ever since then, wish they played each other more!

And one more note: who cares about Hillary Duff, the Duff I'd be diving after is Haylie!

Do you think the Oilers had alterior motives with this Comrie signing? Who wants to bet that the Oilers are counting on Hilary Duff to be a part of Oiler wives initiatives and step in for the national anthem every once in a while?

This move almost plays out like one to satisfy the girlfriends of Oiler fans.

Well, you see, I think if you can put up lots of points, people could care less how big you are. Patrick Kane is an inch smaller and 30 pounds lighter than Sam Gagner, but how many people on here would mortgage the farm to get him? This size nonsense is ridiculous. Sure we could use a little size and grit up front. But I don't see how replacing a young player running in place with a guy who has proven himself is some kind of huge step back like everyone is saying.

Nobody is going to trade for Schremp when they could have him for nothing when he has to clear waivers to get back to Springfield because of age & number of years since his first contract.

I am actually shocked at how pissed off some people are. Ya, he left on bad terms, get over it. He signed at a bargain rate, if he bangs in 20, we all win. Oh ya, how many 20 goal guys did we have last year? He's going to play with fire, he's playing for another contract, I think it's gonna be good.

Horton would be awesome - except we already have a big, unmotivated 'scoring' winger. I guess if you could swap Penner & another player for him you would be getting the exact same thing - except less money.

I have been reading Many of these Comrie articles and comments the last two days and think this is a great signing at 1.125. But THE last thing I want to see is Nilsson moved out because of it. The kid is ANOTHER year older 15 pounds of muscle bigger and the second most talented guy on the team. Move MAP that kid sucks a$$ waiver him whatever. Buy for gods sake give Nilsson one more shot PLEASE.

All you Schremp lovers need to all get in a bus filled with TV's showing reruns of Littlest Hobo, drink drano and drive off a cliff already.
