Welcome Back, Comrie

wbc

It is official; Mike Comrie has signed a one-year deal with the Edmonton Oilers. At this moment terms are still unofficial, but it seems to be between $1- $1.3 million.

This story has been perplexing on many levels since the beginning. First off, our buddy Wanye Gretz was the one who broke this story. The guy who claims he is drunk 24/7 clearly finds time to get a few nuggets.

Even Hall of Famer Jim Matheson didn’t think this was possible, and David Staples shot it down as not happening. Looks like ole Wanye was bang on.

So how the hell did this happen?

It has become clear that this wasn’t a case of Daryl Katz begging Comrie to come here. The fact is Comrie wants to be here, maybe even more than the Oilers' original interest, and he pushed for this just as hard as the Oilers listened.

Whether you like Comrie or not, the fact is when he is on his game he competes hard for his size, and he has lots to play for. How many NHL players around the league have a chance to re-establish their character and reputation in their hometown?

What does this mean?

Last week Robert Nilsson told me it would be great if Comrie came here because he was a good player, but I don’t see any way that Nilsson can stick now that Comrie has signed. Even though Comrie has struggled the past few years, he has still proven more in his career than Nilsson has. And I’d bet that Comrie has more respect from inside the locker room than Nilsson, strictly because he has proven it.

Nilsson might have more natural skill, but the harsh reality is he hasn’t used it on a regular basis, and I don’t see him doing it in Edmonton.

Even though he won’t battle Comrie for a direct spot, I suspect that Marc Pouliot is another guy who will be on the outside looking in when camp breaks. His hockey sense is the issue with him, not his skill set or drive. He just hasn’t shown an ability to play the NHL game they way they want him to. Unless he has figured that out over the summer I don’t see him in the opening day lineup.

I can't wait until Wanye is inducted into some kind of journalism hall of fame because of all of this.

Well Tambo did try to sign Ovechkin but it turned out that he was already playing for some other team.

What a sign of desperation! Just what we needed, another small, moderately talented forward on a team packed with them. Clearly, Tambellini felt that he needed to make a change for the sake of doing so.

On the other hand, since Comrie was on the list of players whose leaving has damaged the Oilers' reputation with the rest of the league, I wonder if him re-signing might help in that regard. Could that be a reason they bit the bullet and passed the cash?

We need terms on this deal. I'm withholding judgment until then. If 1 year for $1 - $1.3M is true then I'm ok with it.

Come on people... lets make this a positive story for once! finally someone who WANTED to sign in edmonton even if he had a limited choices for teams. Lets just all welcome him back respectfully and encourage him on to another 30 goal season. Think of the good of the team rather than targeting someone for their past mistakes! If we can all welcome comrie back then maybe there's even hope to bring back pronger one day?? (HAHAHA)nevermind. LETS GO OILERS!

People keep whispering that the Oilers aren't done dealing yet, but how could they not be? Is this just wishful thinking, or are the whispers just part of the Oilers front-office master plan to keep the masses from storming the office and holding Tambo hostage until sanity is restored?

Gotta be the first one, right?

They should have a midget Royal Rumble at training camp to see who sticks with the club and who's the odd men out.

Personally, I'm totally stoked. I still remember being laughed at by my best friend ( Nucks fan) when Comrie left. The idea of a fresh start, something to prove, a hated player actually coming back is very, very jizz-in-pantsish. Comrie should add some of the character and identity that has sorely been lacking the last 3 seasons. He may be small, but he's a firecracker.

Here are my lines for the current roster:

Cogliano O'Sullivan Hemsky (gives Hemsky 2 shooters) Comrie Gagner Penner (leftovers from the first line...) Moreau Horcoff Pisani (shut it down boys) Jacques Pouliot/Brule Stortini

Nilsson is an extra.

Any thoughts?

People are acting like the Oilers drafted up the contract using the blood of 1000 children. What's the big deal? So they signed him to a contract. That doesn't guarantee him a spot on the team. And like it's been said a million times over, by all accounts Comrie is an upgrade on Nilsson for half the price. I think everyone needs to take a breath and wait until the team plays a couple games before we start lighting burning the city down.

If we can get rid of Nilsson, I'm for this move.

This year, we get a better producer and $700K - $1 million freed up.

Next year, assuming Comrie moves on, it frees up a roster spot for Eberle (or another prospect) and $2 million to go towards raises for Cogliano and Gagner.

On the surface, signing another small skilled forward does not make sense. Unless of course this is a prelude to things to come.

Just a thought, but if you were trying to make a deal to get a top line player, and had to include a guy like Cogliano to get it done, does the Comrie signing make sense then? I think so, but only time will tell.

True, if we are comparing Cogs and Comrie, which I am not. I mentioned Cogs as part of a deal that may bring us a top line forward.

I think teams are built by small moves, not usually big ones. Incremental improvements can have a huge impact, like adding a Curtis Glencross and the chemistry he had with his linemates (or conversely, teams can get worse in these small increments too). Comrie's not going to save the day, but there are good odds that he can outperform his contract. Get a few more outperforming contracts, and this is a play off team. Develop or sign another impact player or two, and this is a stanley cup winner. Assuming Comrie is healthy, today, the Oiler got incrementally better.
