Welcome Back, Comrie

It is official; Mike Comrie has signed a one-year deal with the Edmonton Oilers. At this moment terms are still unofficial, but it seems to be between $1- $1.3 million.

This story has been perplexing on many levels since the beginning. First off, our buddy Wanye Gretz was the one who broke this story. The guy who claims he is drunk 24/7 clearly finds time to get a few nuggets.

Even Hall of Famer Jim Matheson didn’t think this was possible, and David Staples shot it down as not happening. Looks like ole Wanye was bang on.

So how the hell did this happen?

It has become clear that this wasn’t a case of Daryl Katz begging Comrie to come here. The fact is Comrie wants to be here, maybe even more than the Oilers' original interest, and he pushed for this just as hard as the Oilers listened.

Whether you like Comrie or not, the fact is when he is on his game he competes hard for his size, and he has lots to play for. How many NHL players around the league have a chance to re-establish their character and reputation in their hometown?

What does this mean?

Last week Robert Nilsson told me it would be great if Comrie came here because he was a good player, but I don’t see any way that Nilsson can stick now that Comrie has signed. Even though Comrie has struggled the past few years, he has still proven more in his career than Nilsson has. And I’d bet that Comrie has more respect from inside the locker room than Nilsson, strictly because he has proven it.

Nilsson might have more natural skill, but the harsh reality is he hasn’t used it on a regular basis, and I don’t see him doing it in Edmonton.

Even though he won’t battle Comrie for a direct spot, I suspect that Marc Pouliot is another guy who will be on the outside looking in when camp breaks. His hockey sense is the issue with him, not his skill set or drive. He just hasn’t shown an ability to play the NHL game they way they want him to. Unless he has figured that out over the summer I don’t see him in the opening day lineup.

@ BUCK75:

Wait, we WOULDN'T get Shea Weber for Schremp? The same Rob Schremp that is the most skilled player in the NHL, aside from, you know, all those guys that actually play in the NHL? You sir must have your facts backward, or are thinking of Ron Schremp or something.

Penner, Nilsson, and Schremp to LA for The Mullet. Wasn't he the one who left that gaping hole on LW?

Bob mentioned that it was being broadcast via the Oilers website on Oilers Lunch on The Team today. It was great watching it last year. It's not TSN-HD, but it's a nice touch.

Somehow I don't think they bother with this in Miami or Tampa.

The move for Comrie (in isolation) appears to make sense insofar as it can be argued that the team is better today than it was yesterday...

The same logic can be used to applaud many of the moves made over the last three years...

Q-So why doesn't the team actually get better?

A-Because many of these moves did nothing to address the many glaring deficiencies in the lineup...

This signing is more of the same... it skirts many of the real issues facing this team.

I eagerly await a complementary move by Tambellini... Hopefully, something that makes more sense.

Staples blog recapping Comrie's career in Edmonton through media quotes is sick. Highly recommended.

Good for Comrie and the Oilers. Oilers need a skilled center to play with 83 and now that is possible. Horcoff moves down to 2nd line. This is looking real good.

I wonder how KLowe is feeling? There sure was bad blood between the two the first time.

MacT found to be coaching the Spengler Cup team for Canada. Now where is Bry and Jake from 1260 Team now?

The Oiler now should trade 3 people. Nilson to LA for Wayne Simmonds and Schremp and MaP for w.e we can get.

Personally, I like this signing. I know it's not the big name we all hope for but in some ways it's a throw back to a time in Oiler hockey when this team, although not very good, had an identity. Oiler hockey was heart, and exciting.

I am quite sure I am expecting far to much but in some strange way I hope that Mike Comrie finds his niche here again. Edmonton boy who MAYBE loves the city, MAYBE loves playing here? Perhps if things go well he could be our new Doug Weight or Ryan Smyth. Different players I realize but I mean it more along the lines of a player the city truly gets behind, if we can let past demons go.

IF, this player lights the lamp, and is a true Edmontonian, and OILER, this city will sing his praises again.

Here is to hoping he does just that, not just for the city, or the team, but for himself, and the fans.

This has Cinderella story written all over it, that is, if you believe in fairy tales.

If you look at the lines Gregor proposed, the Comrie signing looks a little better. Has Comrie played with a better playmaker than Hemsky since he left E-Town? 20-25 goals isn't that out of the question.

I also don't think it's such a bad thing for Cogs because this gives him another year to develop without the whole city expecting him to score 25 goals.

And if Nillson is on the outside looking in...IS ANYONE REALLY GOING TO MISS HIM???
