GDB minus-4: Saskatchewan Love

What could be less interesting than preseason hockey? How about preseason hockey against the Islanders? Still a bit too meaningful for your tastes? How about playing it in Saskatoon? Now you feeling the love for the game tonight? Totally.

Fresh off assigning 5 players to Springfield and releasing another altogether, the (3-1) Oilers play the (1-3) Islanders tonight in the fine city of Saskatoon. In a game that is being called “Better hockey than the Blades, but only slightly” excitement is high in Saskatchewan today. It’s great to see the NHL moving preseason games around Canada, building the brand, selling new fans on the game and giving young Canadians from coast-to-coast priceless memories like “remember the time Islanders Prospect Greg Maudlin played 4 minutes in a preseason game in Saskatoon, registering no shots, no points and no penalty minutes? Wasn’t that awesome?”

We kid of course, an NHL game is a fantastic experience regardless of teams or point in the year in which it was played. Case and point we have watched replays of the entire Oilers preseason twice so far. Twice. Though we know it doesn’t mean anything.

Sigh.

Who loves Comrie the most?

comscrapping2

It’s amazing to us how quickly our fellow Oilers fans have embraced the return of Comrie. Two months ago you could have made your fortune selling Mike Comrie branded punching bags around town. Now it seems like it is a contest for who can lay claim to loving all things Comrie the most:

“Oh I love Mike Comrie the most. Even when he bounced in ’03 and everyone hated him I secretly still liked him. I have kept his jersey in the back of my closet these past 6 years and sometimes when things weren’t going well I would go put that jersey on and climb into bed with a bottle of Drambuie. Then Mike and I would remember better days as I cried myself to sleep.”

“No I love Mike Comrie the best. When I heard that he was coming back to town I took all of my furniture out into the yard and lit it on fire. Then I went down to the Brick, applied for seven different Brick cards and bought all new stuff. Because at that point of the year it was the least I could do for MY MAN.”

“I love Mike Comrie so much I have invested heavily in cloning Hilary Duff and in a few short weeks I will be wearing her cloned facial skin as a mask. Then I will go find Mike and tell him that I love him, and force him to get marry me in a rushed civil ceremony. Then, when he says “I do” I will tear off my cloned Hilary Duff face, look him square in the eye and say “I love the Oilers Mike. But I have always loved you more.”

People are so full of shit

No one –we repeat no one- loved MC a few short weeks ago, but it is nice to see his bandwagon filling up fast. Hopefully this love from the fans will continue into the regular season and the newest Oiler can contribute like he has so far. As Gregor recently pointed out, “(Comrie) has matured, and he wants to write another chapter in what might turn out to be one of the best fairy-tales we’ve seen in Edmonton in a long time. ”

It sure is shaping up to be an extremely interesting story line, capable of putting preseason hockey on the tips of tongues all around town. We just want to get to the regular season already. And the quickest way to get there is by playing out the remaining games in short order. So lets get it going.

Oilers. Islanders. One game closer to the start of the regular season. It’s go time. (Sorta)

Yes, he reads. Not not the vague (a fight or something like that) comment you're giving yourself an "I-called-it" yank for, but he reads.

The latest storyline is what Pat Quinn thinks about his new team. The Vancouver game offered him what may be a realistic insight of where the Oil is headed with its present personnel. Can't be very encouraging, particularly with all the changes Tambellini didn't make in the off-season to add size and grit to a small and soft group of forwards. To make matters worse, they are starting the season with a first line that comprises one legitimate first line player, Hemsky.

Six legitimate NHLers in tonight's lineup. Can't count Staois, McIntyre, Strudwick and Pouliot. This lineup would be very effective in the AHL, but the Oilers aren't playing in the AHL, or are they?

Oh, I was meaning to tell you, before they start the "regular season" they play "pre-season" games, or "exhibition" games. This way they can determine which rookies, prospects and bubble guys have advanced enough to play in the NHL or conversely ride the bus in the AHL (see Nilsson, Robert). Also there are no points given away for these games AKA they don't mean sh*t.

Speaking of idiots...

Last time I checked, Staois and Strudwick have more NHL games under their belts than 75% of tonights roster with the exception of Comrie and Horcoff..

As for this whole Comrie thing, I dunno..I'm still indifferent about the whole thing. Tambo and Lowe went on the record saying the Oil needed to be harder and tougher to play against, so bringing in yet another small player similar to Gagner, Cogliano and Nilsson confuses me. I like Comries grit and heart but is he the right player for this team?

He can help out in the faceoff circle taking some pressure off of Horcoff, but other than that, he's another smaller forward we don't need.

Penner needs to re-establish his physical side and I think JF Jacques would be a good physical presence if he can play consistantly.

Too many players with different skill sets/attributes might make this the toughest training camp in a long time.

I think if you are bringing in someone to win faceoffs, Comrie would not be your first choice. From NHL.com, he was 41% in 2008/09, 46% in 07/08, 49.3% in 06/07 and 52.8% in 05/06. I suspect you could attribute his low % the past two years to him playing the wing and getting small reps in the face off circle and not really practising faceoffs much.

The team really needed a PK specialist who could win defensive zone coverages more than they needed a player with Comrie's attributes.

I think its time many posters stopped a moment and smelled the dandilions or at least gave their heads a good shake. Last I looked it takes a minimum of two GM's to make a trade in the NHL and before they can they need Cap room. Seems to me those with Cap Room have little by way of tradible players or why else all the room, and those with tradible players at the moment would rather gain cap space in the trade, not likely unless they find a fool like Burke to overpay in high drafts for players they have no one to play with. The other problem is pure economics, not many teams have the money to deep six one way contracts in the minors like Edmonton looks to be able to. Also there is the not so small matter of only being able to have 50 contracts. Three for one sounds fine only if the other team has both cap room and contract number room.

Pfft, you picked MC for your star - just as guilty as all the rest of these people. MC makes our team better and has said all the right things (anyone else feel his lips on the asses of us Oiler fans?) - plus I believe 20 teams in the NHL would have picked him up at his current salary so it shows he truly did want to be here. So he gets a little bit of a cleaned slate to start with with me, not new, but cleaned 1/5th of the layers of sh*t off of it.

He still has a face you'd love to punch though.

Comrie will have to score 50 goals and score the Stanley Cup Final game winning goal off of Pronger's a## in overtime to bring the Stanley Cup back to Edmonton before I start cheering for him.

It's embarrassing how quickly "fans" embrace his return. Is Edmonton really that hard up and lacking in confidence that anyone is welcome here?

When we left Rexall after the game the other day these boys were all talking up Comrie. I asked them if they were as enthusiastic about welcoming their ex-best friend back after he banged his girlfriend. Apparently they're okay with that.

Precisely why Tambellini shouldn't have made the promise to the fans of adding size, grit and players that will be strong on the puck and hard to play against during his emotional press conference when he fired MacTavish and chided the players. Funny thing, how is that Darryl Sutter with no cap room seems to be able to pull off the supposedly impossibility of adding elite players (Boumeester) and unloading players he doesn't need to fit the cap?

@ DonDon: Quite simple, Boumeester, like Heatly engineered his own trade, only was quieter about it. It remains to be seen if Sutter is a victor or victim in this deal as they did not need yet another defenseman, they need serious up front help and goaltending help, neither of which Sutter has produced yet.

Funny thing, how is that Darryl Sutter with no cap room lost Mike Cammalleri and his 39 goals to free agency. Funny thing is how lines 2 through 4 look pretty darn thin on talent for Calgary.

Not saying that Edmonton is winning the Cup tomorrow, but the Oil have a lot of young, talented guys just waiting to break out. The worst move you could ever make as a GM is to give up on the young talent too early and trade away the club's future for some instant gratification.

Really though, guys like DonDon will never be happy until the Oilers ice a team equivalent to the one we are going to see for team Canada at the Olympics. People like that seem to forget that this team is hampered by inflated contracts for guys that aren't worth it. And as you guys pointed out it takes two teams to make a trade. This isn't NHL 03 where you could just make whatever trade you wanted.

I dont know any 11 year old girls with the thumb dexterity and stamina needed to a) Kill 100 Nazi Zombies with only a 6 shooter and a chainsaw, b) cast a level 9 spell of warding while attacking a goblin with a rusty battle axe, or c)score 165 goals in the NHL.
