GDB minus-3: Thinning out the ranks

pat-quinn-motivate

The next three games will sort out pretenders from the contenders when it comes to who makes the final roster.

The Oilers are icing a squad that includes players who have all played in the NHL, and the Flames roster is fairly close as well. These rosters will give the coaches a more clear evaluation of which guys can produce and compete in the regular season.

The biggest surprise for tonight is that J.F Jacques gets to ride shotgun with Shawn Horcoff and Ales Hemsky. Even Jacques himself is surprised he’s been given a chance to skate beside Horcoff throughout the pre-season.

"I didn’t expect to be given this chance, and it has been great. I just have to continue to show the coaches I can contribute. Even now, though, I wouldn’t expect to start the year in the top six."

Jacques isn’t alone in that thought process, but if he continues to hit and chip in with some points, Quinn might shock everyone and leave him there.

Quinn hasn’t been happy with the play of some of his veterans to this point in the pre-season. He feels some are only playing hard when they have the puck, but aren’t working hard enough without it. He did admit that it might be because it was the early pre-season games, but starting tonight that excuse goes out the window.

Here’s the lineup for tonight's tilt.

Jacques — Horcoff — Hemsky Comrie — O’Sullivan — Stone Moreau — Cogliano — Brennan Penner — Brule — Nilsson Souray — Gilbert Visnovsky — Grebeshkov Smid — Strudwick Khabibulin and Deslauriers

Quinn has a one mucker/grinder type of player on every line, and yesterday he admitted he is more about finding pairs than a complete trio. Dominant and even consistent lines are rare in today’s game. The Ducks have one in Getzlaf, Perry and Ryan. The Sharks have Setoguchi, Thornton and Heatley, but they are rare in today’s game.

And tonight’s lineup also has three offensive oriented lines, and Moreau’s grinder-like line. I get the sense that Quinn might lean more to that type of roster, rather than two top lines, a checking line and 4th line of crashers and bangers. He seems like he's leaning toward having someone with grit on each line.

Most of the returning forwards have talked about how this system forces them to work harder and skate much more. Quinn wants them to be a much better puck-retrieving team, and that could be why he wants one gritty/physical player on each line. Someone needs to be able to go get the puck. Of course he will want Hemsky, Gagner, Comrie and O’Sullivan to compete hard and go get the puck as well.

Quick Hitters

Steve Staios was skating Monday with Theo Peckham and Toni Rajala when the rest of the team had the day off. He has some sort of upper body injury it looks like, but it didn’t look too serious based on how he practiced yesterday with the entire team.

Brennan is itching to drop the mitts and show the coaching staff he can excel in that department. Look for him to find a partner tonight. He was joking yesterday that he has been too much of a choir boy so far.

This is two straight games that we’ve seen Nilsson play the right side. He said openly before camp that he is just as comfortable on either wing, and if O’Sullivan stays in the middle of on the left side, there is a void after Hemsky on the RW. Nilsson needs to be more of an impact if he wants to win that job. So far in camp he has been just okay.

****UPDATE****

The Flames will ice a veteran-heavy lineup as well tonight.

Sjostrom Jokinen Iginla Bourque Langkow Dawes Glencross Lundmark Fleury Stuart Jaffrey Prust

Phaneuf Giordano Kronwall Stralman Regehr Bouwmeester Pardy

Kiprusoff looks like he will start in goal.

Interesing to note that Sjostrom gets a shot on the top line similar to Jacques for the Oilers. They Flames brought an extra D-man, so one will sit, and it looked like Pardy, Stralman or Kronwall would be that guy.

Jacques doesn’t have to put up numbers in the AHL, because I don’t see him being an offensive guy in the NHL. He can be a crash and banger. Schremp either scores or does nothing. He is one-dimensional, that is why it is harder to be a soft scorer than a gritty guy. Who scored a lot in the AHL??? Stone. I don’t see him being a top-six forward here because he doesn’t have the natural skill to be legitimate top-six forward. If he is in their top six, then they are in trouble in my mind. Stone would be a 3rd or 4th line guy in my mind, not a top-six.

JFJ scored well down in the A before he got hurt he was almost a PPG player down there. That's what the complaint has been about this guy he scored like crazy down there and couldn't piss a drop up here.

I don't think Pot's was an emergency call-up last season, but he did go through the waiver process at least once.

"If a player has cleared or clears waivers & is then recalled during the same season, he does not have to clear waivers again unless he has either played 10 or more NHL games, or has spent 30 or more days on an NHL roster since last he last cleared waivers."

I'm pretty sure that is how Pot's was given the Yo-Yo treatment by the Oil a few times last season.

1 or 2 way deals have nothing to do with waivers swany. They are both based on actual salary pay-out only.

There are many players who have 2-way deals that still have to clear waivers.

@ swany: He had to clear waiver on monday. Two way has no barring on waivers. It is age and games played based.

I believe the Emergency call up from the AHL is related to how the Oilers can call up a AHL player after exceeding the threshold of call ups. That player if he was sent down on waivers would still have to clear, I think.

@ Reggie:

Notes: The Oilers have recalled forward Ryan Potulny from Springfield of the AHL to fill-in for the injured Sam Gagner (ankle). This is the second callup for Potulny

The Edmonton Oilers placed tough guy Zach Stortini on injured reserve Sunday and recalled Ryan Potulny from Springfield of the American Hockey League.

The Flyers recalled defenseman Danny Syvret under emergency conditions from the Philadelphia Phantoms, their American Hockey League affiliate

This is what I found still not sure if it is emergency, but Syvret who he was traded for and in the same boat in terms of waivers was called up via emergency.

Well, sources told me today that the club traded a prospect to Nashville, dropping the Flyers' contract number back to 48. That also tells me that the signing of Blair Betts is imminent.

As per Tim Pannacio

Well Moore is left if we ever make a decision.

@ Ogden Brother Jr.: No worries. Okay, interesting. So an emergency call up still bends around the rules somehow ?

I vaguely remember something about Potulny not having to clear waivers to go back down because he had already cleared waivers.

I honestly cannot remember the circumstances to how many call-ups the Oilers used last season by New Years, (I'm sure someone here has those stats on hand though?) but I'm pretty sure the total number of call-ups allowed is only 4 in total, after that number is achieved, only then can the 911 calls can go out.

@ TV: Well I am looking, but after sportsnet upgraded you can't go back anymore and check. Last week I could've.

If it is 4, we should just call up Peckham, Reddox a couple times for one day and then use the 911.

Losing one of our top 6 forwards like Nilsson wouldn’t hurt that much, even if Gagner went down. You then can call up anyone you have in the minors without them having to clear waivers.

Ogden Brother Jr. wrote:

Ah yes Emergency recall it is called.

Nilsson has to clear waivers on the way down and the way down...And it can only be an emergency recall if the Oilers have no other healthy bodies. They would need to have three forwards hurt before it is considered an emergency recall.

They will have two extra forwards, so if Gagner gets hurt, then one of the guys from the pressbox would fill in.

Potulny wasn't an emergency call up last year. Bisaillon was a few years back if you recall, but most of you should remember that the Oilers had to dress only five D-men a few games that year because they couldn't call up anyone else from the minors.

There would have to be a rash of injuries, before a player in the minors gets called up on an emergency basis. You can only have 23 players on the roster, so if Gagner and a few others get hurt, and are put on the IR, even then it wouldn't be an emergency call up.

Wow, Quinn keeps laying it on the veterans. Just read his quote talking about how some the vets are only in it for themselves and not helping the younger guys. The more I hear from him, the more it appears Mac-T was letting his favorite pretty much come and go as they please. It may take some time for Quin to salvage this ship but at least it appears he is identifying the problem spots. IQWT

I hate the fact that Moreau has excuses about wanting to "ramp" up to the regular seasons or about having light games to keep something in the tank... That is sooo Shayne Corson and soooo not Jason Smith.

I'm one of the biggest JFJ fans there is but I believe LT did a study not too long that that showed that Jacques points production was unhealthy based on PP production and he obviously isn't gonna get that kind of treatment in the bigs.

I haven't been so worried about 22's lack of NHL production as much as the fact that he wasn't even on the ice for scoring chances, let alone points.

But little by little he showed some real stuff last season and hopefully it carries from there.
