Reason twelve why we love Katz

“I ball till I fall, stunt till I drop, I’m off the showroom floor, not the used car lot” – Rapper 50 Cent

Daryl Katz must be the richest person in the world. While the rest of us are sitting around wondering about Robbie Williams reuniting with 90s boy band Take That, Kay-Z is assembling an empire that any red blooded Edmontonian would kill his entire neighbourhood to get his/her hands on.  Don’t believe us? Check out this article in the Globe and Mail today.

“Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz is close to realizing his dream of building a new hockey rink – for family and friends, not his NHL team. According to alert observers, Katz is having a rink constructed on his property, which just happens to overlook Edmonton’s North Saskatchewan River valley. The owner of the Rexall Pharmacy chain is believed to have had a house knocked down so he can hold hockey games complete with a panoramic view. Katz’s home has been estimated at 25,000 square feet and features five bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, an indoor pool and now a regulation-sized hockey rink. As one neighbour said to our alert observers, “When you have that kind of money, what else are you going to do with it?”

This news must come as a terrifying development to Tambellini and Company. One has to assume that Katz is planning to assemble a second Edmonton based hockey squadron to play in his new arena. Freed up from the constraints of the bloated contracts of the Oilers, the NHL salary cap ceiling and revenue sharing requirements, we can’t see it taking long until this new squad can easily whip the Oilers.

Knocking down other houses to build himself an outdoor arena. Proof positive that Daryl Katz does what any of us in the OilersNation would do, if we too had a couple billion kicking around in our checking account.

What's next? Solid gold toilets?? It boggles the mind.

The waiver deadline for Schremp is noon ET. Since he got put on the wire on a Sunday, there is a 48 hour waiver period.

I know that's what I'd want people to think if I was Batman. When really the ice surface will open up like the Skydome and allow the Batwing™ to launch into the night sky in an effort to assist my fight against evil doers.

Is Jacques playing on the top line in the season opener? Also why dont the Oilers just try and trade Schremp for anything. Anton Stralman got traded for a 3rd round draft pick so Im sure there is a market out there for Schremp.

PLease, please somebody claim Schremp so we can stop wasting ink on this dude. His expiry date is a long time ago in a land far away. And that could be an issue of # of contracts. Sometimes there's a better chance for a player to be traded than picked up on waivers. Tayranchula wrote:

The thing I'd do is find a prospect/suspect in another organization that's in a similar situation. They don't have to be the same style-wise, but just find a guy thats been in an organization for 4-6 years and ready for a change of scenery (like Schremp).

We're cheering for different things to get teh same result.

I think not getting claimed is the only way the ink on Robbie stops. Not getting claimed would let the schempites know that no one wanted him even for free and that should be the end of the story.

On the other hand, if he is claimed, his time as an Oiler will be over, but that doesn't mean we won't see countless posts about his success (or lack their of) in an new NHL organizations.

If he knocked down a house in that area to build a rink, the house he knocked down would have been worth at LEAST 1 million. I walk my dog around there and the average house price is probably 1.5 mil in that area.

I guess that is a MUCH cheaper rink than RX2.

I grew up about 10 houses west of Katz-ville. The neighbors are pissed because its a never ending construction site. Just drove by the old 'hood a few days ago and the porta-potties are back on Valleyview Drive. I imagine a casino and entertainment district are next. There's only a couple of houses left to buy in the crescent.

@ David S: The neighbours have to love the 24 hour security though. We drove by once in the winter... you know, to creep in the windows at night... anyway, as we were driving around the crecent, the lights of one of the two black SUV's flicked on and illuminated the big bad security guys sitting inside. Pretty sure they wrote down my license plate number. I don't care though...that means Katz knows i exist! Maybe i will be invited to his rink!!!

Let the neighbors be pissed. What they should realize is that his property increases the value of everyone in the area by 10 - 15%.

Actually, they're pissed because the construction has been going on forever - its not a deck or a garage he's building. If anything, the houses in the immediate area have dropped in value. You'd be pretty choked if you woke up to cement trucks, hammers banging guys swearing and porta-potties in front of your house for like, 5 years. And it looks like there's no end in sight.

Found this tidbit from Willis' Hockey Or Die! He's taking a look at Flames F Colin Stuart who's been placed on waivers and mentions that the OILERS should claim him. my.thescore.com/hockeyordie/archive/2009/09/29/waiver-wire-finds-calgary-flames-edition.aspx#comments Colin Stuart His offensive ability is, to put it mildly, lacking, and he's never cracked the thirty-point mark at even the minor-league level. Last year, Stuart played 33 games for the Atlanta Thrashers, mostly as the left-wing on a line which featured Marty Reasoner and Colby Armstrong. I've mentioned before how most teams run a power-vs.-power alignment, where their best players play against other teams best players. John Anderson in Atlanta did not do that last season, and looking at hockeyanalysis.com it's interesting to see which forwards Stuart played against the most: Alexander Ovechkin Alexander Semin Stephen Weiss Richard Zednik Sergei Fedorov Steven Stamkos Michael Frolik David Booth Vaclav Prospal Martin St. Louis That's quite the murderer's row, and behindthenet.ca ranks Stuart first among Thrashers forwards in Quality of Competition last season. Despite that, Stuart finished the season at a very respectable plus-3. He's listed at 6'2", 205lbs, and was creditted with 59 hits in only 39 games last season. He should be claimed - perhaps even by division-rival Edmonton, a team in need of a physical and defensive forward. His cap hit is incredibly modest: 483,333 dollars.

When Willis speaks, people would do well to listen. That said, I'd need something beyond this quality-of-competition analysis to sell me. The Flames don't have any more depth at forward than the Oilers, and if they're releasing him, I don't see him cracking our lineup either.

Before all the Schremp lovers rejoice at his being claimed, stop and think a moment who claimed him. Hardy a confidence builder to be claimed by arguably the worst orginaztion in the league. Anyway, at the least he will make it so their first place draft choice is no longer the slowest skater on the team.

It's momments like this where it's fun to go through the HF archieves and read the old articles. Despite all the hype and hope, this really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. http://www.hockeysfuture.com/article_archives/edmonton_oilers

.. I think ever Schremp article has "boom or bust" written in it. Too bad it was a bust but as Guy flaming wrote back after the draft: "The Oilers admit that drafting Schremp was akin to taking a homerun swing; there is no in between, the outcome is either a smash hit or a strikeout."
