Roster changes

ducks-in-a-row

While you have been waiting for lunch hour to arrive, Jason Gregor and Robin Brownlee have been hard at work down at RX1, gathering intel on the rebel forces.

And while you have been thinking about the delicious burritos and refreshing soft drinks soon to hit your lips, the Oilers have seemingly settled on line-up combinations that should take effect until 0:29 into the first period on Saturday night when they will be shuffled immediately.

Here is the lineup as of this morning:

Jacques — Horcoff — Hemsky O'Sullivan — Comrie — Stone Penner — Brule — Cogliano Moreau — Gagner — Stortini

The End of Schremp

The big news from Gregor this morning to the Nation via your ol' pal Wanye is that Reddox and Schremp have been placed on waivers. For those among us who have had a torrid love affair with #88 these past few years, you will be horrified to learn he is now a member of the New York Islanders.

Schremp was unable to deliver the goods in his first Training Camp under the new regime. Somewhere MacT is reading the news and laughing aloud. "Told you he wasn't NHL material," he is saying and stroking his fine mane of silver hair.

On behalf of Oilers fans we shall offer this morning prayer to the Gods of Hockey:

Dear Gods of Hockey, With your hockey hair and missing teeth, And your ability to "always give 110%" Please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please don't let Rob Schremp to turn out to be a star in the NHL and make the Oilers look like idiots for letting him go.

Seriously.

Please.

To borrow a MacT-ism, I think Stone will give away far more than he will contribute. Nilsson, Gags and Cogs might be small, softer forwards, but they were the best forecheckers on the team a lot of the time. I just think Nilsson adds more to the team than Stone. Stone is slow, and not particularly talented. I'm not actually sure he IS more defensively talented, but so far I only have the pre-season to go on, so I hope I'm wrong.

Agreed, Stone doesn't belong in the NHL aside from possibly an injury call up. Quinn must be aware of his deficiencies, could this merely be a message to some of the vets or we really that desperate for some size and grit?

Overall I think Nilsson brings more, but I don't know if we need more guys like him. Stone at least can fit on the 4th line. Nilsson on the 4th line doesn't cut it for me.

Yeah, I think that's more my problem, is that he's riding shotgun with our best pre-season scoring duo on the "second" line. I know Quinn's trying to balance the toughness on the lines, but seriously, Nilsson can CONTRIBUTE, Stone can just police.

there is no way that stone brule and gagner stay on there respective lines.

gagner and brule have to switch, and stone will drop to line 3.

this is just goofy.

the future of the franchise on the fourth line with a guy who cant swing his arms without falling over and a out of date tub of yogurt.

Stone is a line 4 player at best, and only marginally so.

Put Penner on line 2, Moreau on 3 with Gagner & Cogliano and drop Stone and Brule to line 4.

These lines just seem goofy. I'm sure Quinn has his reasons, but they don't seem right.

It really makes you wonder what Quinn thinks about the vets that he has Stone on line 2 and Moreau on line 4. I won't lie, only watched the tampa game so I don't know, but Quinn sure seems set on adding some "CRUST" to this team, and after last years lameness on so many nights, I don't mind it at all. Hope some guys get the message, and, I hope guys like JF, Stone and such excel.

Couple of things, the first game is 4 days away, so todays lines/coaches statements mean almost nothing. In any case, given his history of slow starts, a message does need to be sent. slow starts are a bad habit and Quinn has stated many bad habits need to be broken. Sam is a character and a hard working guy who started out being the great hope and has no doubt getting used to needing to be just a good player so he gets sent to the fourth line to work his way back up. I, for one, have no doubt he will be back to two or three by christmas, baring injuries speeding it up.

And so ends one of the most frustrating and confusing chapters in the illustrious history of Oiler Prospects. Oiler fans are now torn between wishing Robbie well (which I do) and hoping like hell he doesn’t turn into, say, Markus Naslund – a classic late-bloomer who, when unshackled by the team who drafted him (Pittsburgh) turned into a star in Vancouver.

Yes, I know. The Naslund angle is a bit of a stretch. But, consider this: We still don’t have any idea what type of NHL player he’ll be because he’s only played six or eight regular-season games spread over about four years.

Ask the Oilers why he’s played so few games and the company line is that he’s always been one of several small, offensive forwards in the organization and he really got caught up in a numbers game. Fair enough, but was that completely Schremp’s fault? After all, Schremp had been in the Oilers organization longer than Gagner, Nilsson, Cogliano, O’Sullivan, Brule ... etc., etc.

It's weird how a small offensive guy managed to find himself in a numbers game with other small offensive guys when he should have had dibs on a decent look-see (i.e. more than seven games over four years) two or three years ago.

Oh well. Time to move on with life. Good luck, Robbie. I hope you give ‘em hell in the Eastern Conference and, if you do, I pray you stay out there for the rest of your career.

Schremp needed to make the team before Gagner. Once Gagner made it that pretty much put Schremp in his spot.

He was given the chance this pre-season and nothing impressed me other then his hands. If he hasn't learnt to skate by now he will never learn. When is the last time a 5'10 became a faster skater?

Relax. Quinn is just sending Gagner a message... I don't like Brule's game, but he definately had a better camp than Gagner. (After all we, as fans, wanted accountability). Gagner is a slow starter... he had like one goal in twenty-five games to start the season last year. If fourth line duty blows his confidence, or if Gagner doesn't show a willingness to up his game and fight his way back up the lineup: he isn't as good a player as we think.

Barry, why do you think Quinn would have guys practice together and then switch the lines at the last moment?

You think he is trying to send a message on a Tuesday and will change his mind come Saturday? He said flat out Gagner will start the game there. He hasn't done anything in camp, and will be starting there. He, like the rest of the players, will earn their icetime.

I agree Gagner could be promoted as soon as he starts playing well, but he won't get the long leash he has with MacTavish.

I guess it's all relative. It was a massive team choke down the stretch. All I'm saying is I'ts about time he's getting rated on NOW, not what happened last season or the season before or what they MIGHT be capable of in the future.

Alot of talk about Pisani or Nilsson being moved. I think we need to move Pouliot if possible, he's making 900K and doesn't add any value to our forward group.

The perfect fwd for the Oil would be Nathan Horton. I'd trade Gagner for Horton in a second.
