Hockey season approacheth, flanked by big radio news

stauff

Going to work on Friday is always a great feeling, unless you are one of those who believe a weekend starts Thursday and you’re hung to the gills this morning, and today you feel even better because it’s a long weekend. But more importantly for sports fans, when you return to work the NHL season will have unofficially begun.

I have no idea why I am up at 6 in the morning writing. Some moron told me that if I go to bed earlier I will feel much more refreshed. Waking up at 5:45 a.m. after hitting the fart sack at 11 last night sure doesn’t seem like a reward, but I digress.

The Oilers’ rookies will hit the ice Monday morning at 9:30. They will practice for an hour, flood the ice and then have a scrimmage from 10:45 to 11:15. They practice Monday and Tuesday and Rexall and then Wednesday at Millennium Place.

Their rookie tournament will include the Vancouver Canuck rookies and the U of A Golden Bears. The Canucks and Bears will play Wednesday Sept. 9 at Clare Drake. The Oiler rookies will battle the Canucks in Leduc on Sept. 10, and the annual Bears/Oiler rookie game will be played on Friday Sept. 11 at Clare Drake. (I’m surprised they booked that game the same night as the Esks/Stamps rematch.)

The most intriguing players to watch will be Toni Rajala, Jordan Eberle, Johan Motin and Alex Plante. I suspect Plante will play in Springfield this year, while Motin will for sure. Rajala is destined for Brandon in the WHL, and my gut tells me that Eberle will be in Regina, but Pat Quinn is really high on him so he’ll get a long look in camp.

The Oilers haven’t officially released their start date for camp, but I’m guessing medicals will happen on Sept. 11 and they will be on the ice next Saturday. As always training camp will be open to the public.

Things to ponder

-- The NHLPA is really trying to screw hockey fans right now. They canned Paul Kelly earlier this week, for allegedly reading private documents, which Kelly denied.

And then the real kick to the gut came when Glen Healy resigned due to Kelly’s firing. By all accounts, Healy was doing a good job for the PA. Why a kick to the gut you ask? Because this means we can expect to see Healy on TV again soon. I really liked dealing with Healy, but as a colour guy he infuriates me. There are too many former goalies behind the mic nowadays and I’d be stunned if he wasn’t back on TSN this fall.

-- Bill Daly told Toronto Radio AM 640 that the Leafs don’t have veto power when it comes to icing a second team in southern Ontario. I never understood why they thought they would have, but I loved Daly’s explanation as to why.

Daly stated that “the commissioner has unassailable rights to interpret the league constitution as he sees fit.”

I always knew Gary thought he ran a dictatorship. But I do agree with him on this one. The Rangers had to bite the bullet when the Islanders came into the league, and again when the Rockies relocated to New Jersey. The Leafs can whine all they want, but hopefully nothing stops the NHL from putting another team in southern Ontario soon.

-- At first I thought Jim Balsillie would be good for the league, but as every day passes, he, along with his lawyer, looks more ridiculous. He isn’t bigger than the league, and clearly thinks he doesn’t need to play by the rules. Bettman has already let too many wingnut owners in the league; I hope he keep Balsillie out.

-- The biggest question heading into Oiler camp is who should be the first line LW. We could debate the Oilers don’t have a true first line, but it’s too early to be negative, so let’s pretend they do. Who fits the best opposite Hemsky: Nilsson, Cogliano, Penner, O’Sullivan, Eberle or Schremp?

Ok I threw in Schremp to appease the Schrempaholics, but he has no shot in my mind. I wouldn’t keep Eberle either. The other four all present valid arguments as to why they should get a shot.

Penner scored 23 goals in 2008 playing there. He’s the only one with some size and if Hemsky gets in trouble he is the only one that can bail him out. He seemed to understand that at times last year, and if he realizes he needs to be the protector as much as he has to give an effort, then he’s a good fit.

O’Sullivan looked out of sorts in E-town last year, but in 2008 he put up 22 goals playing with skilled guys in LA. He’s the most responsible defensively out of the group, and if they opt to play Gagner with Hemsky, then O’Sullivan might be the best fit strictly because of his two-way game.

I’d love to see Cogliano given a shot here. He told me that he isn’t opposed to playing the wing this year, which is the opposite of how he felt his rookie year. His speed could open up a lot of space for Hemsky, and I think Cogliano’s skill is underrated. He missed a lot of breakaways his rookie year, but last year he showed way better finish around the net. He’s averaged 18 goals the past two seasons, playing predominantly on the third line. My gut tells me he could be a diamond in the rough goal-wise for the Oilers.

Nilsson’s skill is second only to Hemsky, the problem is his dedication and heart is similar to Penner’s so far. Nilsson is the biggest question mark heading into camp. He said all the right things yesterday, and he changed his off-season routine to ensure he’s in the best shape possible. But will he be able to bring that same off-season dedication to the rink most nights? I have a soft spot for highly gifted players, and while my gut senses Cogliano could have a break out year, I just don’t feel the same about Nilsson. For his sake I hope I’m wrong.

More Oilers coverage at the TEAM 1260

Back in July I wrote,

Stewart Meyers and Ryan Zimmerman have a solid vision on where they want the station to go and they will be more aggressive in the future. It won’t happen overnight, and change is always hard for a listener to take, but I like where they want the station to go. There will be more changes in the next year, and all of them should make the station better in the long run.

And even further back, in June, Brownlee said:

Stauffer was the critical voice, the hammer on the TEAM 1260 roster, before, as I put it in an item leading into this season, he “took the hush money” and joined the Oilers. When I add the two together, I wonder if sports talk radio listeners in this town wouldn’t be best served if Stauffer wore two different hats with two different stations.

Well guess what? Starting next week the TEAM 1260 will bring you even more local Oiler coverage. "Oilers Lunch" will begin on Sept. 10, and will air weekdays from 1 to 3 p.m. Bob Stauffer will host the show. This is another big step towards increasing local coverage on the TEAM 1260. The official announcement will come Tuesday morning.

I also report with mixed feelings that my long-time producer Wil Fraser is leaving Just A Game. It was a great seven years, but after much prompting from me he is taking a bigger role with the station. He will co-host Edmonton Sports Night Live with Corey Graham starting Sept. 14.

Fraser is a class act. His dry sense of humour during commercial breaks made many shows much more entertaining for me. His ability to laugh at himself, while dishing out timely and sharp digs to me or others, made for some hilarious moments.

I’m forever indebted to Wil when back in 2003 he banned Adil from my show. It is still my favourite Fraser memory.

We were at 930 CJCA from 11 p.m to 1 a.m. and Adil used to phone three or four times a week. Wil always let him through, but after a few months we got many complaints from people saying they turned the station off when they heard his voice. So one night Wil explains to Adil that he would be limited to one call a week.

Adil goes off on Fraser calling him a racist, and yelling that he’ll call the CRTC with a complaint. At 930 CJCA we were in the same studio, so Wil had to whisper when answering phones, except for this time.

Fraser's a pretty calm guy, but he didn’t take kindly to being accused of racism, and he tore a strip of Adil: “You know what you %&*($&) dork, consider this a LIFETIME ban. You are done. Don’t call the show again."

I was on the air and immediately went to break. I can still remember laughing hysterically as Fraser went off during the break. I’ve never seen him so fired up. It was awesome.

I have no doubt Wil and Corey will make the evenings must-listen radio. I wish him nothing but the best.

Adil- awesome Will, nicely done. Good luck with your new gig. Oilers lunch- this is great news, except that 1-3 is normally the only time I get any work done because I turn the radio off.

Congrats to Will, he's great on the radio and will do a great job. And coodoos to the team for getting Stauffer for 1 to 3 pm. gregor you've done a great job and your 3-6 pm show is a definite for me everyday, and more hockey talk in the day is great. I would guess it'll be a toned down Stauffer since he is employed by the Oilers as well, but this move basically means my radio will be tuned to Team 1260 from 1 pm on (couldn't stand the fox guys).

You mention Rajala as a player to watch at rookie camp. I know he'll be at camp but my understanding was that he won't be on the ice due to his knee injury. Do you mean that he will be skating?

They don't have enough second generation Sutter's to fill out a rookie roster yet...

I have a call into the Flames, but I'm guessing they didn't want to travel again, or maybe they are doing something in Abbotsford with their new AHL team possibly.

@ Usual Suspect:

Rajala is at week 4 1/2 with his recovery and they don't want to push him so he won't be on the ice for that. You might see him at main camp possibly. Even if he was 100% healthy there is no chance he makes it this year. He has great skill, but needs to bulk up. He will flourish in Brandon I would suspect, especially if Kane, Glennie or both return to the Wheaties.

I'd give Cogs a shot on the top line with Horc and Hemsky to see how that goes and try Penner on the 2nd with O'Sullivan and Gagner.

Congrats to Fraser, we'll miss you on the drive home but you'll provide some humour and good insight on the evening show.

Looking forward to hearing Stauff back on the Team, now I'll something to do at work aside from reading Oilers Nation.

Congrats Wil. I have to say that he is a solid addition to the late night show, and I will enjoy listening to Wil and CG. Great combo.

Great to hear about Stauffer coming back into the fold. Greater coverage for the Team from a familiar and very informed voice. Excellent.

It looks like the Team will have great coverage from 1pm to midnight, but I still say the early morning show is a question mark. I know that change isn't always easy, but I hope that some chemistry and continuity develop, and fast!

First off, some great changes to The Team. I always wondered when Frasier was going to break out and take a starring role. He and Corey should be great. Fantastic addition w/ The Oilers show. While I think that the local media is far too Oilers-centric, this is a possibly the best option if you are doing and all Oilers show. FREE ADIL!!! Unintentionally funny callers are always welcome in my book. Just rip them Howard Stern style, and let the comedy flow.

I gotta disagree with you a bit on The Balsille take. You are right when you say that he should check his ego and play by the rules set in place. But I really can't blame this guy from being frustrated with the system. The Bettman crew have made stupid move after stupid move. From keeping teams in markets that dont work, to approving The Boots Bataglias of the world over a hockey mad billionare, Bettman has proven himself the most inept commish of all time. I really think that Bettman knows that once he moves one of his expansion teams, he is essentially signing his pink slip. The writting will be on the wall, his southern experiement was, for the most part, a collosial failure. I also think it's personal between Bettman and Balsille. Bettman is willing to buy a lame duck franchise and eat millions just to block Balsille. Just Silly.

ONe more question question for ya Jason, to your knowledge, is there any truth to the rumour that Gretzky's annual fee as coach/owner is 8 million? If so, Gretz and The NHL should be ashamed.

From Urban Dictionary:

Sick - Now used as the newest word to replace cool

Shredder - A person who is performs well in most things he does and is applauded by his peers as a ''cool'' or ''popular'' person

Adil's not great, but I'll still take him over Daily Doug. People who make fun of Adil for trying to participate directly in our civic democracy should be kicked in the junk. Sure he has weird/weak takes most of the time, but he's not a whiny negative dick like Doug. If he didn't have the heavy accent, I don't think anyone would give two craps about his lame takes. Drunken rednecks call in to the Team all the time with the dumbest commentary imaginable, and don't get bashed anywhere near as much as Adil.

I think I'll call Stauffer's show and complain that he's providing too much content, and doesn't have enough co-hosts.

Fraser's a beauty, it's fun to listen to the transition for guys like him and Corey going from nervous, stuttering news-readers/producers to kickass show hosts. Go TEAM!

I wonder if this is a sign of things to come in terms of Oilers broadcast rights. Katz thinking of buying the Team and moving Oilers coverage there perhaps? Anyone know when the Oilers contract with CHED is up?

Glad to hear Wil Fraser is joining the night show as well. Corey was a little lost on his own at times and having two hosts will probably work a lot better. Good luck Wil!

@ MattL But they are different drunken rednecks each time and are easily forgotten because we all work with morons like them. Maybe it differs for others, but his accent has nothing to do with it- it's his weak, repetitive takes. (Same goes for Daily Doug.) Edmonton bad, Montreal good- then he tries running for council. Nothing like buttering up the electorit (sp?) by publicly telling them you like nothing about their city/ beloved hockey team day after day.

The fact that the Heatley trade fell through is a great thing, Cogliano is going to be monster. I see him as a Mike Camellari(sp?) type of player, with not quite as good of hands as Mike, but a guy that can get you 30 goals.

Jason, I am sure it has come up before, but how about Hemsky playing LW position from time to time? I mean he sets up on the LW boards on the pp, then have an offwing shot like Cogliano on the RW. The way I see it that may even up the line up a little bit. It wouldn't have to be egded in stone but I see it as a possiblity.

It'll be Stauffer Lite, but that's better than no Stauffer at all.

Funny Adil story... my dad was telling me how Adil has plagued Edmonton's air waves for DECADES, going back to the old Bill and Bill Show on CJCA. One day, Bill Jackson is going off about how inefficient civil servants are, how the civil service is bloated, and there should be cuts, etc... Well, Adil calls up, offended as all hell, because he's a civil servant, and he's worth every last dime of our tax money, and Bill Jackson should shut up because he's ignorant and anti-union, and blah blah blah.

Jackson: So... you're calling a radio station from a federal office at 1:30 in the afternoon to tell me how you're spending my money wisely? Is that it? Is that pretty much the basis of your argument?

Adil: *silence* *click* *bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz*

ahahahahaha

Typical of loud-mouthed IDJITS like Adil to panic and run when hit between the eyes with a 2x4 of reality. Another reason to love the '06 cup run. Didn't hear from him for MONTHS. Pussy.

Good job, Wil!

One question I have about Stauffer working on both radio stations... I understand he is an employee of the Oilers, not of 630 CHED but what happens in situations where there is BIG Oilers news (i.e. the Heatley fiasco or any other big trades or signings) in the past year I believe Stauff came on air with Tencer to discuss and take calls on occasion. So if he continues to do that type of thing is it on CHED or The Team?

Maybe I'm over thinking this....

Good question. I think I'll post an item in the next hour taking a swing at some of these kinds of questions.

@ MattL Oops, it should have read "maybe it differs for others, but his accent has nothing to do with it FOR ME..."

@ Brownlee Thanks. And keep digging.

@ Bob Stauffer:

There are 2 Willis', 2 Gregor's, and a Brownlee on the main page... Is THIS the kind of balance you were looking for when cruising the ON? On another note, I am looking forward to the new show... should be killer some discussions happening the day after an actual game...

I remember on one of Corey's first shows in the night slot, he said:

"We'll take one quick call before the break, let's go to Adil"

Great news on the programming changes at 1260.

Jason, I am sure it has come up before, but how about Hemsky playing LW position from time to time? I mean he sets up on the LW boards on the pp

I second this, the only risk of having someone on their off wing is, when performing a basic pee wee team defensive zone breakout, it's sometimes difficult for the winger to pick up the D pass on the half boards. With a player like Hemsky this wouldn't be an issue. In the offensive zone you get his stick in the middle of the ice where he'll be in the preferred shooting position.

@ Quicksilver Ballet Batman (Galdolf?) owning 1260 is the last thing we need. 1260 is the place to call out the Oilers. Where linteners and hosts can speak our mind. 630's relationship with the Oil is why they can't do this.
